. . . Born in White County, Tennesee, January 31, 1827. Died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Hannah M. McGowen, near White Rock, at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, 1911. Age 84 years, 4 months and 13 days.
. . . He was visiting at the home of his sister-in-law when taken sick a week or more before his death with stomach trouble. He had been making his home with his son, S. D. McGowan, for some time past.
. . . Uncle Morg has lived in Texas County for over 57 years. He was married to Martha Allen Dec. 23, 1853. When a boy he moved with his parents to Arkansas; lived there one year and his father died there; moved with his mother to Webster County, Mo., and from Webster County to near Huston in 1854.
. . . He has been a church member for 36 years and was a menber Of the Baptist church at Plum Valley at time of his death.
. . . A man simple in his life, living always upright and honest, with kindliness in his heart for all and a friendly, cheery word of greeting for friends and neighbors, this pure, good man will be sadly missed by all. He was a regular visitor to the Herald office when in Houston and we counted Uncle Morg as one of our real friends and will join in earnest sympathy with the grief-stricken family.

Ten children resulted from the union, seven st. ill living: James R., Casper, Wyo., age 55; John W., Tilden, Neb., 54; Carrol G., Cabool, Mo., 51; Sampson D., Bucyrus, Mo., 45; George M., Chin, Alberta, Canada, 41; Alice Grogan, Yates Co., Kansas, 38; Oma Grogan, Bronson, Kansas, 33. He also leaves 36 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
. . . He had five brothers and four sisters, only one brother being alive, living in Washington.
. . . Burial took place at Emery graveyard Thursday at 3 o'clock p.m., funeral services being conducted by Rev. W. T. Watson in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing relatives and friends.

Morgan Sylvester McGowen was born Jan. 31, 1827 in White Co., TN.  He was 
a son of Amos & Louisa McGowen of White County, Tennessee and Webster Co., 
MO.  On Dec, 23, 1853, he married Martha Allen, who had been born on Feb, 
28, 1830 in Tennessee.  Martha was  the mother of ten children. Morgan died 
of accute gastritis at the age of 84 on June 14, 1911.  He is buried in the 
Emory Cemetery in Houston, Texas Co., MO.  Martha died Mar. 30, 1915 of 
Influenza.  Their known children were:

1. Allen M. McGowen, born in December, 1853 in Texas County. 

2. Louisa E. McGowen was born Dec. 23, 1854 and on Dec. 5, 1872, she 
married Darnell Alexander.  He was born on June 15, 1849 in KY.  They were 
owned a farm in Piney Township, Texas Co., MO.  Louisa died on Mar. 18, 
1903 and Darnell on July 24, 1934.  They were buried in Emory Cemetery in 
Piney Township, Texas Co., MO. 

3. James R. McGowen was born on Feb. 19, 1856. He lived in Casper, Natrona 
Co., WY.  The name of his wife is unknown.  

4. John Wesley McGowen was born on Dec. 25, 1857 in Ellis Prairie, Texas 
Co., MO.  His wife Emma Ruth Davis was born in Iowa on Mar. 4, 1863. They 
were married on Jan. 5, 1879, in Texas Co., MO.  In 1911, they were living 
at Tilden, Madison Co., NE.  John died Apr. 4, 1917 in Aurora, Lawrence 
Co., MO.

5. Carroll Gene McGowen was born in Jan. 16, 1860 near Ellis Prairie, 
Texas Co., MO.  He was married to a Margaret "Maggie" Porch on Aug. 11, 
1878/9. She was born on Apr. 2, 1857. Carroll died on June 9, 1937 at 
Weston, Platte Co., MO and Maggie on Dec. 30, 1946.  They are buried in 
Jarrett Cemetery in Texas Co.

6. Rebecca A. McGowen was born Feb. 8, 1863 in Ellis Prairie, Texas Co., 
MO.  She died on Aug. 14, 1879. 

7. Sampson Dallas McGowen was born on June 9, 1866 in Texas Co., MO. His 
wife, Mary Novella Sillyman, was born in Oct. 1872 in Texas Co. They were 
married on May 31, 1891, and lived on a farm near Bucyrus, in Licking, 
Texas Co., MO.  He died on Mar. 23, 1940 in Piney Township, Texas Co.  
They were buried in Emory Cemetery.

8. George Dallas McGowen was born Jan. 15, 1870 at Cabool, Texas Co., MO. 
In 1906 he married Ella Jane Carter who was born Feb. 4, 1883. They lived 
in Casper, WY in 1917.  They had also lived in Chin, Alberta, Canada at 
one time.  George died of Influenza at his home on Nov. 19, 1918. Ella 
died on Feb. 9, 1975.

9. Alice Belle McGowen was born on Apr. 11, 1873 in Texas Co., MO. In 
Apr. 1899 she married William Butler Grogan. He was born in Houston, 
Texas Co., MO. They had a farm near Cabool and in 1911 they were living 
at Yates Center, Woodson Co., KS.  Alice died on Sept. 18, 1950 and is 
buried in Nagel Cemetery,  Cabool, MO.

10. Oma Lee McGowen was born in Aug. 31, 1877 in Texas Co., MO.  On Dec. 
23, 1899 she married Robert Gentry Grogan and they lived at Bronson, 
Bourbon Co., KS.  They also had a farm near Wichita, KS.  Oma died at 
Wichita, Sedgewick Co., KS and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery.
