The Battle of Loos was the largest British offensive mounted on the Western Front in 1915 during World War I, cost more than 61,000 British casualties, mostly from the use of Chlorine Gas. "At Loos, the British employed poisonous gas for the first time in the war, releasing some 150 tons of chlorine from over 5,000 gas cylinders across no-man's land. The gas failed, however, to reach the German trenches and inflict any significant damage." More info here: This Day in History & The Long, Long Trail ... Grama used to say, "they killed their own men when the wind went the wrong way."
