The 1901 Census for Ottawa, Ontario, Canada lists Ferdinand A. Dewhurst as a six year old living with his parents, Edward and Sarah.

[2] Frances was b. 22 September 1899, in Masham, Quebec, on a farm "up the Gatineau," lived there until the age of ten, moved to Ottawa, didn't get along with her mother, adored her own father, Thomas Woods, and worked in the secretarial field. Frederick Dewhurst and Frances divorced in 1938 in the USA. The 1901 census shows the Woods family living in Masham, Gatineau Dist., Quebec. Thomas was b. 1864 in Ireland, belongs to the Church of England and is a farmer. His wife "Leizre" was b. 7 September 1865 and is Scotch (sic). Frances is listed as Mary F Woods. In 1911, the family has moved to Ottawa, Ontario where Thomas is listed on the census as a Constable, b. May 1865. In this census, his wife is Elizabeth b. September 1873. Daughter, Mary F Woods has a birthdate that matches the 1901 record. A 6 year old son, Duncan b. August 1904 has been added to the family. Thomas is listed as Irish, Elizabeth is Scotch and the family has become Presbyterian.

[1] Ferdinand's Marriage Certificate lists his father as, Edward Dewhurst and his mother as Sarah Latimer Dewhurst and states both parents were b. in Canada. However, the 1901 Canadian Census and other records state Edward was b. in Denmark; that he immigrated to Canada in 1842 but identifies his Tribal/Ethnic origin as England; he belongs to the Church of England and works as a Civil Servant. His civil Service Record adds the middle initial "R."In 1891, Edward is listed as a Civil Servant in the Dept. of Agriculture and his parents are identified as having been born in the West Indies. In 1871, Edward's middle name is identified as Rosinsr (sic), his birthdate is 1832, he is listed as Danish, as Episcopal, and is a Publisher. Canadian Civil Service Records for Edward R Dewhurst from 1895-1900 state he was b. 28 May 1838, began work there in January 1879, working for the Dept. of Agriculture, Inside Service; earned from 912.50 – 1000.

[1] The Marriage Record for Edward and Sarah shows his name as Edwin R. Dewhurst, age 60, son of Ferdinand A. Dewhurst and Pauline Henrietta Roseuine. 1851 Canadian Census shows Ferdinand working as a Farmer in Brantford, Brant County, W. Ontario, Canada and say he immigrated in 1842. Unfortunately, the census does not offer marital status, but it is assumed that Pauline has died. There is another Dewhurst line or two in St. Croix and it may prove out that Ferdinand Augustus is the son of Edward Dewhurst of the Dewhurst Houses in Lancashire and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Heylinger - stay tuned!

[2] A marriage record exists in Ottawa, Carleton Co., Canada for Ferdinand Edward Dewhurst, born Denmark, son of Paul Rosiner Dewhurst to Emma Swale on 20 August 1912. This record identifies the mother of Ferdinand/wife of Paul as Mabel Bowen.

NOTES: Also listed in 1871: Alice Dewhurst abt 1794 England Essex, Maidstone Female. 1851 Census records in Brantford, W. Ontario, Canada the following Dewhursts: Robert Dewhurst Canada West (Ontario), Brant County, Burford abt 1812 England and his wife, Isabella Dewhurst Canada West (Ontario), Brant County, Burford abt 1804 England. It is assumed these folks are related but it is not yet known how. They could be siblings of Ferdinand. The 1841 census in England; Wilsledale ?? (unreadable) Shop in Shap, W. Westmorland, England lists: Robert Dewhurst 29 Farmer, Isabella Dewhurst 35 and John Dewhurst 9 Mo plus Elizabeth Dewhurst 25 (female servant) sister to Robert? The 1861 Census at 105 Victoria St., Preston, Lancashire, England lists: Robert Dewhurst 49 Plasterer Journeyman b. Cadley, Lancashire and Isabella Dewhurst 47 b. Cadley, Lancashire - looks like the foray to Canada was not a good fit for them.
