[1] Mary D. Watson Mankins was born abt. 1848 in Jackson County, Missouri, the city of Watsonville, California is named for her family. In the 1900 Census, she lives with son Wallace and four younger children. She has five boarders suggesting that Samuel had died between 1893 and 1900.
From the California DAR Pioneer Records; "Romantic Forty-Niners" pub. 1950, p. 171:
WATSON - San Francisco
"My mother, Mary Derinda Mankins, at the age of one year, came to California with her parents, Jacob Watson, Sr. and Phoebe Baldwin Watson, in 1849. They made the trip with ox teams. They settled at what is now Watsonville, where my grandfather, Jacob Watson, Sr. owned and conducted a grist mill and general merchandise store. The town was named for him. The Watsons' had a family of fourteen children."
"My father, Samuel Mankins, came from Arkansas with his parents in 1850. He married my mother, Mary Derinda Watson, at Monterey, 25 January 1864. Their family numberred fourteen also, I being the twelfth."
"My mother's parents, the Watsons, were both born in Virginia; my father's parents, the Mankins, were both born in Kentucky."
[signed] Mrs. Arthur J. Rankin, Sr. and Arthur J. Rankin, Jr. (son)
NOTE: this means the above charts are missing the names of three children....
[2] Peter Lee Mankins and Artimisse are enumerated in the 1900 census in Beckweth Township, Plumas County, California. Artimisse was born February 1863 in California. Their children as of 1900 are: Gertruse (?) A. Mankins b. October 1897; Peter Lee Mankins, Jr. b. September 1899. Also living with the family is Joseph M. Eppslein who is listed as "brother;" thus one would think his sister must be Artimisse Eppslein Mankins. Eppslein was born January 1846 in Missouri. I have heard however from Don Mankins (click on his name to email him), great grandson of Peter Lee Mankins and he has family documentation identifying Artimisse "Artie" as a MacDonald, so the identity of Mr. Eppslein is unknown.
[3] Children of Wallace and Ruby are: Gordon born 1908 in Susanville CA died in Portland OR in 1972; William born 1902 in Susanville CA died in Michigan in 1979; Marvin born 1913 in Susanville Ca died in Portland OR in 1977; Hershall born 1918 in Westwood CA died in Susanville CA in 1979
