According to the Biography of Meritt Drane and Malvina Todd Neal, Merrit Drane Sr was exempt as "a cripple" from active duty in the Civil War, but served as assessor of tithes for the support of the Confederate army. He said he also "performed the service of looking after and managing the business affairs of my neighbors' wives, War Widows they were called; whose husbands were in the army." He was a farmer. In 1874, in order to obtain educational facilities for his children, he moved to Corsicana and entered into the agricultural implement business.
