Walter Landells The deceased Walter Landells was a native of Scotland. After coming to this part of the country, he was engaged for several years in the employment of the late Earl Grey. he and his wife lived for a long time in a house adjoining the Unitarian chapel in the town. They had a family of two sons and several daughters. Of his sons, James and William, the former will be best known amongst us. Previously to commencing business, Mr Landells was in the employment of the late Mr James Allen; after leaving him, he opened out a drapery establishment in Fenkle Street, which had formerly been used for the same purpose by Mr William Donkin, a son of the late Mr Robert Donkin of Ingram. When Mr Archibald Brankstone retired from the Corn Market, the premises were purchased by Mr Landells. In a commercial point of view he has been very successful. For several years he has taken a deep interest in the affairs of the town. Almost since the formation of the Local Board of Health in Alnwick, he has enjoyed a seat at the Board, and for a much longer period has identified himself with the interests of the Mechanics' Institution. In the early years of this now flourishing society, he occasionally taught in one or more of these classes, which were then carried on in connection with the Institute; but the thing that will connect his name more permanently with the town, is the residence that he has built for himself at Oaklands (Oaky Bank). It is exactly one mile to the east of the town, and closely adjoins the Alnmouth Turnpike road. From this secluded retreat, which is sheltered to the west by a high hill, a beautiful expanse of rural scenery is commanded; wood and water, hill and dale, lend a charm to the scene; whilst the silvery waterfalls of the Aln give an attraction to the locality, little inferior to that described in the fine old ballad of the Hermit of Warkworth, where it says, "Not far from thence the Coquet
stream
The inscription is thus :- In memory of Walter Landells, who died May 31st, 1845, aged 61 years; also of Jane, wife of the above, who died July 10th 1870, aged 92 years.
