From Ken Parker's FTM Homepage http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/a/r/Ken--Parker/index.html Descendants of John Faulkner--Updated 16 October 1998 Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 FAULKNER was born Abt. 1625, and died Unknown. He married ELIZABETH.

Notes for JOHN FAULKNER: According to Claude W. Faulkner, John and Elizabeth Faulkner and their sons John, Thomas and Francis arrived in Maryland 22 January 1665 on the ship Agreement. He says the ship almost certainly landed near Hog Pen Neck in Kent County, where the family settled.

Mona Forkner Paulus writes in Volume III of The Forkner Clan that John Faulkner and his wife Elizabeth Filmer came to Maryland in 1665 from Wales.

James Falkner reports that John and Elizabeth and their sons Thomas, Francis and John were passengers on the Agreement out of Bristol with a possible stop in Cork with arrival at Hog Pen Neck, Maryland 22 January 1665. They had with them two servants. Their passage was paid for with 300 pounds of tobacco.

A Supplement to the Early Settlers of Maryland shows at FF:350 Film No.:SR 8204 that John Faulkner of Hogpen Neck, Kent Co., immigrated in 1665 with Elizabeth, his wife, Thomas, Francis and John, his children, and Elizabeth Bloxon and Thomas Jones, his servants.

James Falkner gives John Faulkner's date of birth as abt. 1627 and reports that John was born in Wales.

Notes for ELIZABETH: Some researchers have said that the Elizabeth John Faulkner married was Elizabeth Filmer. Some of them have attempted to make a connection between John or one of the other Faulkners and Sir Edward Filmer, whose daughter Elizabeth married a William Faulkner "citizen and draper of London." While the marriage of William Faulkner and Elizabeth Filmer is documented, I have not yet seen a proven connection between them and John Faulkner who arrived at Hog Pen Neck in 1665.

Children of JOHN FAULKNER and ELIZABETH are: 2. i. FRANCIS2 FAULKNER, b. Abt. 1648, England; d. Unknown. 3. ii. THOMAS FAULKNER, b. 1655, England; d. 1709, Talbot, Maryland. iii. JOHN FAULKNER, b. 1665, England1; d. 1730.

4. JOHN FAULKNER (THOMAS, JOHN) was born Abt. 1678 in Maryland, and died 1727 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. He married SARAH ELIZABETH FORD Abt. 1705 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland.

Notes for JOHN FAULKNER: John Faulkner's will, dated 9 May 1727, spells his name as Falkoner. It identifies him as a planter in Queen Anne County, Maryland and leaves his estate to his wife, Sarah, who also has charge of the sons, Thomas, James, William and Emanuel, until they are 21 and of the daughter, Ann, until she is 18 or married. The will is in Volume 6 of the Maryland Calendar of Wills. Note that this does not mean that John did not have eight children. Francis and John would have been over 21 and Temperance over 18 at the time the will was written, so they were not included in the assignment of custody.

In various places, John Faulkner's name is spelled Falconar and Forkner.

Children of JOHN FAULKNER and SARAH FORD are:

i. JOHN FAULKNER, b. Abt. 1702, Queen Anne's County, Maryland; d. Unknown.

5. ii. FRANCIS FORKNER, b. Abt. 1704, Queen Anne's County, Maryland; d. Abt. 1783, Anson County, NC.

3. THOMAS FAULKNER (JOHN) was born 1655 in England, and died 1709 in Talbot, Maryland.

Notes for THOMAS FAULKNER: Some sources report that this Thomas Faulkner married Mary Catherine Ferree in 1715 and fathered seven children with the youngest born in 1722. This would mean that Thomas married at age 60 and sired a child annually until he was 67.

Other sources say that Thomas was born in 1686. If this is so, he could not have been the Thomas who arrived at Hog Pen Neck in 1665.

Mary Catherine Ferree apparently did marry a Thomas Faulkner in Pennsylvania in 1715, but Michael Smoke reports that this Thomas Faulkner was the son of a Daniel Faulkner.

There Ferree family has an interesting history, but we should not attach ourselves to that family without proof that the Thomas Faulkner Mary Ferree married is a member of our own family. I have not yet seen that proof, and I have omitted Mary Ferree from the pedigree.

Children of THOMAS FAULKNER are:

i. THOMAS FOLKNER, b. Abt. 1674; d. Abt. 1708. 4. ii. JOHN FAULKNER, b. Abt. 1678, Maryland; d. 1727, Queen Anne's County, Maryland.

DEATH: Death record ordered from Raleigh Vital Records on 4/17/93.

All of the following is from Darlene Featherstone Lankford hompepage:

CLEMENT ARLEDGE5 FEATHERSTONE (RICHARD4, RICHARD F.3, WILLIAM2, WILLIAM1) was born 1808 in FairfieldCo., South Carolina24, and died Aft. 1880 in Gaston Co., North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH ELDERS, daughter of [UNKNOWN] ELDERS and ANN.

Notes for CLEMENT ARLEDGE FEATHERSTONE:

The 1850 South Carolina, Fairfield Co. Census extract states that Clement's occupation was "Planter," with real estate valued at "1400." At the time the census was taken, Clem's age was reported as 41, with wife Elizabeth age 35 born in S.C., and children: Richard age 11, William age 7, Joseph age 3, and Ann Elders (white female) age 55, who was Elizabeth's mother. They owned a very large plantation in the Southpoint area of Belmont, N.C.

The 1860 North Carolina Gaston Co. Census lists C.A. Featherstone, age 52, occupation Farmer, with real estate valued at "1000," and personal property valued at "6775.00," with his birthplace as S.C. His dependents are listed as: Elizabeth age 45, Richard age 20, Wm. E. age 17, Joseph age 12, C.A. Jr. age 9, Jas. W. age 3, and Ann Elders age 69.

The 1860 North Carolina "Slaves" Census for Gaston County lists CA Featherstone as a slave owner of 85 slaves total; of these 16 were black females with ages ranging from 6 months to 46 years old, 17 of these were black males with ages ranging from 9 months to 47 years old, and 2 were listed as "white"; a male age 15 and a female age 13......he reported that the additional 51 slaves were "fugitives" [run-a-ways] from the state, none of his slaves were reported as "manumitted" [set-free]. Since human beings were bought and sold into slavery they were valued as "personal property" in 1860, this practice is reflected in the amount stated for Clement's personal property value of 6775.00. Fortunately, slavery was abolished in the south in 1865 at the end of the Civil War.

The 1870 North Carolina Gaston County Census following the Civil War lists C.A. Featherstone, as a farmer, age 62 with real estate valued at "700" and personal property valued at only "600." Note the reduction in the value placed on his personal property from 6775.00 to 600.00 after slavery was abolished. In this census are also listed his wife, Elizabeth age 54 who was still keeping house, his sons Clement A. Jr., age 19, and James W., age 17, who are both listed as farmers, and his daughter Mary A. age 15 listed as "at home."

The 1880 North Carolina Gaston Co., Southpoint Township Census lists C.A. Featherstone Jr. as a single white male farmer age 30 named "Clem" with a nickname of "Pum." Listed as members of his household are his father C.A. Sr. age 72, a farmer, his mother Elizabeth age 66 with an occupation of "keeps house," and one John Lamby age 9, whose occupation is stated as "servant."

That is just a quick search of items that may be of interest to you.

The 1880 Gaston Co., NC census shows C.A. Featherston, Jr. and C.A. Featherston, Sr. The 1870 shows C.A., Jr. was Clement A. It certainly would seem that Sr. would also be Clement A.

Estate was appraised and inventoried on 20 Apr 1813. A sale was made and proceeds divided between Fleming Featherston and Richard Featherston with interest from 13 Apr 1821. "The above accounts (unreadable) 24 Feb 1821" An amount was deducted for keeping the children up to Dec. 1820 (board for Thomas (?or could this be Fleming?) E., Richard Featherston, children of the deceased. (JFH: I did not read these records, but was told they were very difficult to read, and am guessing that Fleming/Thomas could possibly have been Clement.) No record of a Thomas or Fleming of this time frame/location has been found.

Anne FEATHERSTON and Clement ARLEDGE applied for letters of administration of estate of Richard FEATHERSTON. Estate was appraised and inventoried on 20 April, 1813. A sale was made and proceeds divided between Fleming FEATHERSTON and Richard FEATHERSTON with interest from 13 April 1821. "The above accounts (unreadable) 24 Feb, 1821" An amount was deducted for keeping the children up to December 1820 (board for Thomas (or Fleming?) FEATHERSTON and Richard FEATHERSTON, children of the deceased. (Records were very difficult to read, guessing that Thomas/Fleming was actually Clement. There are no other reords from this date on of a Thomas or a Fleming so confidence level that this was "Clement" is very high.

Richard is the only Featherston in 1830 SC Census.

William was a "Headright" from 1662-67 per Drew Featherston research in 1986. Will dated Dec. 23, 1718. Died by Feb 1726.

26 Sept. 1664; N. Bradford granted 2800 acres in Northampton Co., VA for transporting 28 persons from England, including William FEATHERSTON.

5 April 1666; R. Richardson granted 500 acres in Accomack Co., VA for transporting 10 persons from England, including William FEATHERSTON.

9 Oct 1672; J. Wallop granted 350 acres in Accomack Co., VA for transporting 7 persons from England, including William FEATHERSTON.

He may be the William FEATHERSTON who along with Robert POWELL + Will SEAWALL was granted 200 pounds of tobacco by the VA Gen. Assembly at James City for killing wolves. Henrico Records, Vol. 10, page 355.

28 April 1691; Henry Randolph granted 5650 acres in Henrico Co., VA from head of the Little Creek being the first branch of the Back Creek, through Steward's field on FEATHERSTON's LIne ...

6 June 1699; William FEATHERSTON granted 545 acres - Charles City Co., VA

1702; Prince Georges Co. formed from Charles City Co. VA

27 April 1703; William FEATHERSTON owned land in Charles City Co. VA. LPB#9 page 539.

Ancestors of Burwell FEATHERSTON contains the following information on this William FEATHERSTON: William was born about 1642 in Henrico Co., VA. The records have Jane listed as his daughter, not his son William's daughter. I believe Burwell FEATHERSTON Ancestry records to be correct.

From Darlene Featherstone Lankford home page: FEATHERSTONE - is the man from Featherstone, the name of places in Northumberland and Yorkshire England, a name from an Old English word "fether" or "four" refers to a tetralith, consisting of three upright stones capped by a headstone or lintel, (four stones in all). Solemn oaths could be sworn on these great stones.

At various places in England and on the continent great stones have been erected by prehistoric peoples, like; Stonehenge, the remaining ruins of temples and forgotten holy places. They were also used to keep in memory the exact place where a certain event occurred, or to mark a route, call attention to a buriel site, or to mark off territory owned by a particular family.

The Featherstone Chevron [family coat of arms] is described by Burke's General Armory as: Red which represents "fortitude and creative power," with a Silver Chevron representing "serenity and nobility," with 3 Silver Ostrich Feathers and 3 Sable Annulets which represent "Repentance or Vengeance." This "Protection" [Chevron] is one of the earliest known, and indicates the bearers achieved notable feats. These symbolic descriptions still hold true today, for most of the Featherstones, since many of Clement's descendants are creative individuals that are long on fortitude [aka stubbornness] who have achieved some notable feats in true family tradition.

The spelling of the name "Featherstone" with and without an "e" on the end has long been a family controversy......which can finally be put to rest. The ancestors of my grandfather Charles Ervin Featherstone, Sr. have always spelled their surname with an "E." This has been confirmed in several historical documents, death certificates and with the U.S. Social Security administrative office, not to mention of course, "The FEATHERSTONE Society."

Assumption: (to be verified) That Charles FEATHERSTON, b. Abt 1635 in England is this William's brother. (FF Branch #3) Charles married Rebecca Stratton. Their son was John C. FEATHERSTON. (FF Branch #4) Reason for this assumption: Born about the same time frame, both came from England to Henrico Co., VA.

Notes for CHARLES ERVIN FEATHERSTONE: (from Darlene) Charles Ervin Featherstone Sr. was born in Gaston County, North Carolina. His death certificate states that his usual occupation at the time of his death was a "retired" textile worker. His birth date is stated at November, 5, 1890. His attending physician, Dr. Scruggs stated he died of a perforated stomach ulcer, on June 5th 1948, his age at death was noted as 57 years and 7 months. His parents are stated as Joseph Featherstone and Mary Neagle of Gaston County, and his wife as Willie Sipe Featherstone. His usual residence was stated as RFD #1, Mt. Holly, Gaston County, N.C. The burial was noted to be on June 6, 1948 at the Greenwood Cemetery, in Belmont, by Fite Funeral Home.

Of interest concerning his grave site at the Greenwood Cemetery, you will find that his tombstone was originally engraved as "Featherstone" with an "e," which was "mysteriously filled in with cement" after his death and burial, no doubt by one of the "more stubborn" family members, who were adamant that his name was spelled "Featherston." Thus a long-standing family debate regarding the spelling of our surname has now been immortalized in STON(E)......FEATHERSTONE that is, with an "e."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ While researching this family history, I ran across the words to a song that was sung to the tune of "America," by the families of rebel soldiers who went off to fight in the Civil War:
God HOLD our precious men, Preserve them to the end, God HOLD our men. Safe in Thy arms so strong HOLD them from every wrong. To Thee they all belong. God HOLD our men.
God KEEP our own dear men, From every stain of sin, God KEEP our men, When Satan would allure, When tempted, KEEP them pure. Be their protection sure God KEEP our men.
God SAVE our splendid men, Send them safe home again, God SAVE our men. Make them victorious, Patient and Chivalrous, They are so dear to us, God SAVE our men.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ Joseph A. Featherstone first appears listed in the 1850 South Carolina Fairfield County Census as the 3 year old son of C.A. and Elizabeth Elders Featherstone. Clement and Elizabeth moved their family to Gaston County, North Carolina between 1850 and 1860. It is known that Joseph and his older brothers Richard, William, James and Clem Jr. and their sister Mary were all born in South Carolina.

The 1860 North Carolina Gaston County Census lists Joseph as the 12 year old son of C.A. and Elizabeth Featherstone.

The 1870 NC-Gaston County Census lists Joseph under "dwelling no. 124/family no. 124" separately from his father's, which was listed as dwelling number 122, family 122. Joseph's occupation was stated as farmer, age 23 with real estate valued at "300" and personal property valued at "200" who in May of this year married Mary, age 19, whose occupation is "keeping house." Both Joseph and his father C.A. were noted as being "males eligible to vote."

The 1880 NC-Gaston County Census, for the Southpoint Township, lists Joseph A. Featherstone, age 32, as a farmer born in S.C. married to Mollie E. (Mary), age 28, born in North Carolina who keeps house. Their children are listed as: James C. age 9, John H. age 7, William age 5, Richard age 3, and Joseph E. age 2 months, born in March of 1880. Also listed as a member of his household is Louis Warren, a black male, age 25, whose occupation is stated as "servant."
