Cecilia Carr.spouse: Rolfe, Agnes "Ann" (1562 - 1610)Notes for John Aldrich: John Aldrich and his wife were involved in a domestic dilemma which surely caused acute embarrassment to his clerical family. Henry Aldred?
Apparently John was absent from home for quite some time, and Agnes/Anna remarried and had at least one child by her new husband, Edmund/Edward Boutman, whom she married on 2 Feb 1596 (while stil legally married to Aldridge). Her offspring William is probably the son of Boutman, according to Sekanick (59).
Sekanick, citing Boddie, writes: "John Aldrich and his wife were involved in a domestic dilemma which surely caused acute embarrassment to his clerical family. It seems that he was absent from home for some time, and, thinking him dead, his wife remarried one Edmund/Edward Boutman on February 2, 1596. _________________________________________________________________________ From Clay Fulcher; http://www.tx3.com/~arledge/clay/haldred/d328.htm#P328 15. Clement ALDRIDGE Sr. (20) (25)(26) was christened on 25 Sep 1636 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. He died about 1698 in Northumberland County, VA. He was buried on 19 Jan 1698/99 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. He died on 19 Jan 1699 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. It is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where he lived or died in England where he was born. I suspect the former. Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia.
Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church.
On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26). On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed constable of Cherry Point.
His will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.
No records of Clement's children, except for William's, are known of. Clement Jr.'s will was destroyed in the same courthouse fire that his father's was. So we don't know who Clement Sr.'s grandchildren were, other than William's offspring.
The following is a Northumberland County VA court record from Patricia Daniels, Jan 26, 1997.
Court 21 Sept 1699, page 66. Motion of Clem't Arledge, probate to him of the last will of Eliz. Arledge his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten.
The following excerpt was an email from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997:
"Clay,
Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. He was a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, in the area known as Cherry Point Neck.
On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date. At any rate, the wife of Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth.
Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan Boswell Aldridge.
Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter]. There are several records proving this in Northumberland records.
Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six children, who were
1. Clement Aldridge, Jr., d. 1705/6, m. (1) Elizabeth and (2) Mary. He left a daughter, Elizabeth, who was 12 years old by 1710. 2. daughter - no further info. 3. daughter - no further info. 4. William Arledge - d. 1724/5, m. (1) Alice and (2) Sarah. See below. 5. Isaac Aldridge 6. John Aldridge
Although the surname Aldridge was used interchangeably with Arledge or Arlege throughout the 1600s, the children of William Arledge used Arledge more than Aldridge. William left the following children:
1. William Arledge
2. John Arledge, d. circa 1730 leaving a son, John Arledge, who was bound to William Owens to learn carpentry.
3. Clement Arledge, m. (1) ? and (2) Ann. He sold his land in Northumberland Co. on 9 May 1743, and removed from the area.
4. Jane Arledge
5. Isaac Arledge, b. circa 1721, and probably moved to New Bern, Craven Co., NC with his guardian, John Callahan, who went there after 1738. (He was first apprenticed to Callahan, then made his ward.)
6. Sarah Arledge - b. circa 1724/5, and probably also went to North Carolina with her guardian, John Callahan. [Sarah and Isaac were the children of William's second wife, Sarah. The other four children were older, although William and John were still under the age of 20 when their father wrote his will on 25 Aug. 1724.]
This is the only line that I have researched. I hope this will give you some ideas for further research.
Carolyn"
Note from Connie Moretti:
"Chester County, S.C. has deeds available from the date the county was formed in 1785. Prior to that, deeds are in the Camden District or in Craven County both of which were discontinued but the records may be in the state archives. Land Records of whatever sort may be your best bet for going back farther."
The following information was researched and contributed by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
Clement Arledge II (Jr.), b. bef. christening on September 25, 1636, Worsted, Norfolk, England. His birth was recorded in 1640 records. He was the son of Clement I (Sr.) and Susan Boswell Arledge. Married to Elizabeth Till(es) on October 18, 1668 (Boyd's Marriage Index). Elizabeth was b. ca. 1642, Marsham, Norfolk, England. It would seem that they came to Northumberland County, VA between their marriage and the birth of their first child on September 1669. Clement was a joiner, a skilled carpenter. He died before will probate of January 19, 1698/9. They had a son, Clement III, who was married to an Elizabeth, which complicates identification in later VA records. There was another Clement and Elizabeth at the same time in England.
Children:
1. Clement III, b. September 1669, Northumberland County, VA. 2. Winifred, b. March 1671/2, Northumberland County, VA. 3. Alice, b. October 1673, Northumberland County, VA. 4. WILLIAM, b. February 1675, Northumberland County, VA; d. bef. January 20, 1724; m. Alice ______. 5. Isaac, b. February 1678, Northumberland County, VA. 6. John, b. February 1681, Northumberland County, VA.
The births are from the Parish Register of St. Stephen's Parish, recorded in "Births and Deaths, 1650-1810", State Library, Richmond, VA.
He was married to Alice. Alice (27)(20) was buried on 1 Sep 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
He was married to Elizabeth TILLS/TILLES (daughter of William TILLS and Mrs. Mary) on 18 Oct 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. Elizabeth TILLS/TILLES(28) (26)(29) was born in 1646 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. She died on 20 Sep 1699 in Northumberland County, VA.
Elizabeth Tills/Tilles was descended from a family which had long resided in Norfolk, England. The earliest record of someone by this name in Norwich is the 1374 will of William Tillis. Other members of this family also immigrated to America and are mentioned in Northumberland County records in conjunction with the Aldridge/Arledge family. Clement ALDRIDGE Sr. and Elizabeth TILLS/TILLES had the following children:
19 i. Elizabeth ALDRIDGE(30) was christened on 22 Aug 1669 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. +20 ii. Mary ALDRIDGE. +21 iii. Clement ALDRIDGE Jr.. 22 iv. Winifred or Mira ALDRIDGE(30) was christened on 9 Oct 1670 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. She was born in Mar 1674 in Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, VA. 23 v. Alice ALDRIDGE was born in Oct 1676 in Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, VA. +24 vi. William ARLEDGE/ALDRIDGE. 25 vii. Isaac ALDRIDGE(30) was born in Sep 1680 in Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, VA. +26 viii. John ALDRIDGE.
__________________________________________________________________________ _____________________ From Pam Wilson's file; Clement Aldrich/Aldridge and Susan Boswell were apparently immigrants to Northumberland Co, Virginia. However, I have not yet found any record of their immigration in the form of ship lists or of patents given for their transport.
The Northumberland County Record Book 1666-1670 (p 100) includes a grant from Sir WILLIAM BERKELEY unto ABRAHAM JOYCE and RICH: THOMPSON of 200 acres of land in ye county of Northumberland, bounding upon the land of THOM. This raises many questions--who were the 4 persons Joyce transported--did they include Clement and Susan? And why did he deed his patent over to Clement?
There is also confusion in the Northumberland Co, VA records about *which* Clement was involved in certain transactions, since there were several generations of Clement Aldridge/Arledges.
The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. The will in question is that of DAVID LYNDSAY, MInister of God, who bequeathed his estate to his daughter HELEN LYNDSAY, who he also named his Executrix. It is most likely that these early records were for the elder Clement.

Hi! - I was looking over your site and have a small addition. In #73 David Alsip was also married to Katharine Rogers on 29/30 Aug 1857, Hancock Co., KY marriage bk. 1B pg 141. They were married at the MGU Baptist Church. I am aware of two children - Sophia Alsop b. abt 1839 and married 24 Oct 1857 in Hawesville, Hancock Co., Ky., to Nathaniel Henry Bruner, of Hawesville; and David Alsop b. Abt 1841. The Hancock Co., KY 1870 Census lists David (51) and Catherine (38).
Do you have any more information about the Alsop's? Sophia and Nathaniel Bruner were my gggrandparents.
