Notes from Roy: He was born in a cabin one mile south and one mile east of Servia on Rd 400E. Foundation is located in a clump of trees. Visited the site with Roy on 5/09/93. He lived his entire life in Servia. His parents never owned a home, they rented and therefore, moved often to various houses in Servia. Rent for houses in Servia rented for $5.00 per month. He went to school in Servia at the new school house which was built in 1915. He went there for 8 years, then attended high school in North Manchester. He never graduated from high school. He took a job at the General Store in Servia in 1928 and worked there until 1933. (See Iva Flohr for story about dating + marriage.) Bought the ir foist and only house in Servia after their marriage. They paid $600 for the house and $100 for all of the furniture in the house. They still live in the same house today. (Nov. 1998) Worked with the railroad from 1933 to 1936. He was the #2 man for the Erie Railroad. Took a job at the Milk Plant in 1936. Started there the day after Iva Quit. He made $70.00 per month. When the plant unionized his wages increased to $82.00 per week. He work at the Milk Plant until it closed in 1951. Milk prices dropped so low due to large dairy farms that the small local farmer could no longer support their families and farms selling milk. He worked for Celotex making insulation board from 1951 to 1962. He worked as custodian of North Manchester Schools from 1962 to 1974. He took care of the grounds at Fairview Cemetary from 1967-1974. He helped Lester Binnie write the book for cemetaries in Wabash Co.spouse: Flohr, Iva Mae (1911 - )

Roy recalls that Moses spent half of the year at home in Servia, 1 block west on 900, and the other half of the year at his daughter Della's in Hastings, MI. He traveled back and forth on the train.
He lost 1/2 of his foot due to gangrene in the 1920's. After that he made and sold baskets. He split the wood himself to weave the baskets. Roy has two of the baskets, a market basket (upstairs closet) and a sewing basket (top shelf in coat colset). (Per Roy)
The News Journal - North Manchester, July 28, 1927 OLD PIONEER COMES FOR VISIT Moses Krichbaum, who lives with his daughter, Mrs. Charles Hawthorne at Dowling, Michigan, has been in this locality the past few days visiting old friends. Mr. Krichbaum is really one of the older of the pioneers about North Mancester. He came with his parents to this locality when a lad of about seven years of age and he is now 88. Nearly all of his life has been spent about North Manchester and Servia. He helped build the Big Four railroad. For many years he was a caretaker of the Fairview cemetery. A few years ago a part of one of his feet had to be amputated and that with increasing age made it impossible for him to work as he once did. So now he is at the home of his daughter enjoying a well earned rest, though he says he can still work a little and enjoys doing so. Wherever he goes about North Manchester Mr. Krichbaum is greeted with a kindly handshake and a hearty welcome for he was always square in his dealing man with man, and always has had a cheery smile that made friends for him on every side.
