d. 19 JAN 1699 in Northumberland Co, VA

father: Aldridge, Clement(1601 - ~1668)
mother: Boswell, Susan(1605 - )
3072. Clement Aldridge, died Jan 19, 1698/99 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. He was the son of 6144. Clement Aldrich/Aldridge and 6145. Susan Boswell. He married 3073. Elizabeth Tills/Tilles Oct 18, 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. 3073. Elizabeth Tills/Tilles, born 1646 in Worstead, Norfolk, England; died Sep 20, 1699 in Northumberland County, VA. She was the daughter of 6146. William Tills and 6147. Mary.

Notes for Clement Aldridge: It is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where he lived or died in England where he was born. I suspect the former. Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia.

Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church.

On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26). On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed constable of Cherry Point.

His will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.

No records of Clement's children, except for William's, are known of. Clement Jr.'s will was destroyed in the same courthouse fire that his father's was. So we don't know who Clement Sr.'s grandchildren were, other than William's offspring.

The following is a Northumberland County VA court record from Patricia Daniels, Jan 26, 1997.

Court 21 Sept 1699, page 66. Motion of Clem't Arledge, probate to him of the last will of Eliz. Arledge his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten.

The following excerpt was an email from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997:

"Clay,

Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. He was a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, in the area known as Cherry Point Neck.

On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date. At any rate, the wife of Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth.

Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan Boswell Aldridge.

Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter]. There are several records proving this in Northumberland records.

Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six children, who were

1. Clement Aldridge, Jr., d. 1705/6, m. (1) Elizabeth and (2) Mary. He left a daughter, Elizabeth, who was 12 years old by 1710. 2. daughter - no further info. 3. daughter - no further info. 4. William Arledge - d. 1724/5, m. (1) Alice and (2) Sarah. See below. 5. Isaac Aldridge 6. John Aldridge

Although the surname Aldridge was used interchangeably with Arledge or Arlege throughout the 1600s, the children of William Arledge used Arledge more than Aldridge. William left the following children:

1. William Arledge

2. John Arledge, d. circa 1730 leaving a son, John Arledge, who was bound to William Owens to learn carpentry.

3. Clement Arledge, m. (1) ? and (2) Ann. He sold his land in Northumberland Co. on 9 May 1743, and removed from the area.

4. Jane Arledge

5. Isaac Arledge, b. circa 1721, and probably moved to New Bern, Craven Co., NC with his guardian, John Callahan, who went there after 1738. (He was first apprenticed to Callahan, then made his ward.)

6. Sarah Arledge - b. circa 1724/5, and probably also went to North Carolina with her guardian, John Callahan. [Sarah and Isaac were the children of William's second wife, Sarah. The other four children were older, although William and John were still under the age of 20 when their father wrote his will on 25 Aug. 1724.]

This is the only line that I have researched. I hope this will give you some ideas for further research.

Carolyn"

Note from Connie Moretti:

"Chester County, S.C. has deeds available from the date the county was formed in 1785. Prior to that, deeds are in the Camden District or in Craven County both of which were discontinued but the records may be in the state archives. Land Records of whatever sort may be your best bet for going back farther."

Notes for Elizabeth Tills/Tilles: Elizabeth Tills/Tilles was descended from a family which had long resided in Norfolk, England. The earliest record of someone by this name in Norwich is the 1374 will of William Tillis. Other members of this family also immigrated to America and are mentioned in Northumberland County records in conjunction with the Aldridge/Arledge family.

2. Court 21 Sept 1699, page 66. Motion of Clem't Arledge, probate to him of the last will of Eliz. Arledge his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten. Notes for Mary Donaldson: She was the widow successively of John Donaldson and Dennis Eyes. She survived Clement and married a fourth time to Jonathan Palfrey.

Marriage Notes for Clement Aldridge and Mary Donaldson: This marriage occurred sometime between 20 April 1699 and 18 March 1702.

He was married to Elizabeth. Elizabeth (32) died before 20 Sep 1699. Clement ALDRIDGE Jr. and Elizabeth had the following children:

28 i. Elizabeth ALDRIDGE was born in 1698 in Northumberland County, VA. The following Northumberland County Court Record was sent to me by Patricia Daniels via email on January 26, 1997.

1. Court 15 ffeb. 1709/10, page 634. Elizabeth Arledge chose Capt. ffrancis Kenner guardian. Francis Kenner and William Medcalfe bond for it. (note: Elizabeth was about 11 or 12 years old here.)

__________________________________________________________________________ _____________________ From Pam Wilson's file; Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia. His parents, Clement and Susan, may have preceded them. Sekanick speculates that, since Clement (Sr) died in 1668, Clement (Jr) may have come to America to claim an inheritance. A Clement Aldridge first appears in records of Northumberland Co, VA in 1666. However, Clement and Elizabeth's two children were christened in Worstead, Norfolk, England, in 1669 and 1670.

Lived in Bowtracy and Fairfield Parishes north of the Wicomico River (in 1698 these parishes merged to form St. Stephen's Parish, the records of which are in the State Library of VA).

children: see remnants of Northumb. Co Births and Deaths, 1650-1810, p.3 [Names are illegible; clarified in Franklin Aldridge and Alice Sekanick books, but don't know their source].

Many, many references to Clement and Elizabeth in Northumberland Co. Order Book. Many lawsuits over tobacco. Occasionally the spelling Arledge or Aldredge appears instead of Aldridge. See F.R. Aldridge's "Aldridge Records, Vol. II" for a thorough listing.

Northumberland County Court 21 Aug 1672 (Book of Orders p. 156): "Whereas an attachment was awarded to Mr. THO" MATHEW agt ye Estate of STEPHEN BYLAND for five hundred + fowreteene (514) pounds of tobacco and caske, wch Attahcment is returned executed on soe much in ye hands of CLEMT: ALRIDGE: Judgement is granted ye sd MATHEW agt ye sd ALRIDGE for ye sd summme with costs. [Ruth and Sam Sparacio, Order Book Abstracts]

Death dates in some sources given as 19 Jan 1698/9. This conflicts with Franklin Aldridge's claim that he remarried in 1701 to Mary Donaldson, for whom documentation exists. Further evidence leads to conclude that it was his SON Clement who married Mary Donaldson. Others say it is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where he lived or died in England where he was born. However, there are references to Clement's will being proved in Nortumberland County on 19 Jan 1699; one of the witnesses was Mary Tullos [reference: NEED TO FIND: O.D. Lindsay, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. 1, p. 52; cited in article on Rodham family in Northumberland Historical Society Bulletin, XII, 1975.]

Clement was one of the men charged with the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26).

On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed constable for Cherry Point Neck, one of six constables appointed for the county [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 652].

16 Oct 1695: CLEMENT ALDRIDGE was one of witnesses (along with CAPT. RODHAM KENNER and Mr. THOMAS BUSHROD) to probate the will of Mr. CHRISTOPHER NEALE, as petitioned by HANNAH NEALE, Executrix. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 711]

17 Mar 1797: ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE wife of CLEMENT ALDRIDGE, JUNR, relinquishes her rights of dower to 64 acres of land sold to THO.MILLER. SHe also relinquishes dower in the sale of 60 acres to JOHN CRALLE. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759]

19 Jan 1698/9: Motion of ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE, Exx. a Probate to her of the Last Will of CLEM'T ALDRIDGE, proved by DAVID STRAUGHAN and MARY TULLOS. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759] Clement's will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.

[21 Sept 1699: Motion of CLEM'T ARLEGE, probate to him of the last will of ELIZ. ARLEGE his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten. [Northumberland County, VA, Court Orders, p. 66] . This is most likely a reference to the next-generation CLEMENT, who also had a wife Elizabeth.]

There are many references to land bought FROM Clement Aldridge/Arledge. For example, the 1726 will of JOHN CRALLE, SR. of St. Stephen's Parish (written 1 Oct 1726, proven 16 Apr 1728) , aside from stating his desire "not to have any funeral sermon, and that there be no superfluity of drink disposed of at my funeral", left his son John Cralle sixty acres of land in "Cherry Point" WHICH I BOUGHT OF CLEMENT ABRIDGE, JUNR. [Northumberland Co. Record Book, 1726-1729, p. 97]

The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997, with my notes in brackets: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. There are several records proving this in Northumberland records [WHERE?? WHICH ONES??]. Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six children [WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION?], who were 1. Clement Aldridge, Jr., d. 1705/6, m. (1) Elizabeth and (2) Mary. He left a daughter, Elizabeth, who was 12 years old by 1710. [SOURCE??] 2. daughter - no further info. 3. daughter - no further info. 4. William Arledge - d. 1724/5, m. (1) Alice and (2) Sarah. See below. 5. Isaac Aldridge 6. John Aldridge."

Northumberland County Record Books 1743-1749 (p.166) show a will of Richard CRUTE dated 11 August 1746 (proved 8 Dec 1746) who said he desired that his son Richard "might be bound to SAMUEL ALDREDGE to learn the joyners trade." Who is this SAMUEL ALDREDGE??

We also still need to find records of Clement's death--a will or estate record SOMEWHERE would be nice! Here are my notes on Clement (son of William and Alice of Northumberland Co VA):

Clement was named in his father's 1724 will, but was not a legatee of the land in Wiccocomoco Parish that was given to brothers William and John.

Clement Arledge (son of William and Alice), born c. 1708, sold his land in Northumberland Co. VA on 9 May 1743, and removed from the area.

Tacy Arledge, Laura Frankhauser and Virginia Stout, in "History and Descendants of Isaac Arledge" (1981) write that brothers Clement and William moved to NC following their father's death. "There is a land grant to William in Bertie Co, NC dated 1726. Part of that county later became Granville County, which has land records for Clement. William and Clement were still living in Granville County in the 1760s, where Clement probably died after 1790."

Is there a will for Clement Arledge??

Teri Allred <TCAllred@@aol.com> wrote in Feb. 1998, providing a clue that either this Clement ARLEDGE (or perhaps a son named Clement) was living in HALIFAX CO, NC in the 1760's. *We should look in Halifax Co, NC for a possible will.* Teri wrote:

"In my old notes, I found four deeds in the 1764-1765 time-frame between Clement Arledge and others, recorded in Halifax Court, NC records. Two are of particular interest. On 15 Oct. 1764, Dolling Jones of Halifax County sold 100 acres of land where William Bobbitt formerly lived [Buflow Branch] to CLEMENT ARLEDGE, witnessed by James Thompson, Francis Bell and Drusilla Thompson, proved by James Thompson, Halifax Court.

At January Court, 1765, CLEMMENT ARLEDGE and James Thompson of Bute County sold 260 acres to John Austin Finnie of Surry County [North Carolina].

Those who have done research in Northumberland County are probably aware that there was some connections to Thompsons there, also."

Teri continued: "I have been working on the family of Clemmons Allred who married Sylvania Cude or Cood recently. His first name was also spelled "Clement" in the records. He got married in Randolph County, NC in 1827. His parents are not known at this time, though he lived next door to Robert and Nancy Allred in 1850, Randolph County. At one time [1839] Clement "Allread" sold some land in Guilford County, NC to Robert Julian. His wife's family was living there at the time, though she was believed to have been born in Randolph County also."

Arledge, Frankhauser and Stout continue, "Clement and Ann are believed to be the parents of Isaac Arledge, born about 1736 in NC. Isaac was married to a Susannah, named as his "true and loving wife" in his will, filed August 1818 in Randolph Co, NC. ...."

Did Clement have sons other than Isaac? Finding Clement's will would certainly help to clarify many things about this branch of the Arledge family.

Franklin R. Aldridge (Aldridge Records, Vol. II, 1975, p. 189) writes: "It is very possible that William and his brother Clement Arledge settled in what was then Bertie County, NC. One William had a land grant in Bertie County in the year 1726. Edgecombe was formed from Bertie in 1741, and Granville from edgecombe in 1746. Franklin and Warren were later forme= d from Bute, which was formed in 1764 and abolished 1779, which was in the same locality.

"In the land deeds of Granville County, Clement ALDRIDGE and Clement ARLEDGE have the same property,a nd they are one and the same person. The same for William ALDRIDGE and William AKERIDGE. Records of old Bute County may be found in Warren, and some are in Franklin County. William and Clement were living in Granville County in 1760's. In the year 1761, Earl Granville granted to Thomas TURNER (Deed Bk E, p. 175, Granville Co, NC) vacant land on NC Fishing Creek adjoining CAPPS, ALDRIDGE, THOMAS along Peter SANTSING's line and Francis SANTSING's line adjoining JONES and SMART lines. This appears that one of the ALDRIDGEs was already living there.

"In Granville County in the year 1762 Francis CAPPS deeded to Clement ARLEDGE of same county in the consideration of the sum of Eighteen pounds gold and silver coin for 300 acres of land being a survey taken by James = Sentry, lying on the head of Bufelow Creek (Deed Bk. F P. 152 Granville Co, NC). Another land deed from Lewis COLLINS to William ACRIDGE "Arledge" in 1763 in Granville County on both sides of the west prong of Grassy Creek. This land [had been] granted to Collins by Earl Granville.

"After 1763 to 1790 there are no more deeds in Granville County pertaining to ARLEDGEs. Bute was formed in 1764 and abolished in 1779...in Warren County, a deed from Dolling and Lucy JONES to Clement ARLEDGE dated 1764 [Warren Co Deed Book A, p. 96] and a deed from Barsheba to Clement ARLEDGE dated 1765 (Deed Book I p. 9). ...The 1790 census for Warren County [does not turn up any Arledges, nor does the 1800 census for Franklin County], so we may assume the Arledges had moved to other parts of the country by this time."

Note that the Dolling/Darling Jones name turns up in Fairfield or Krshaw Co, SC documents later, another tie between these two families.

Any further ideas or data, anyone? Thanks, Pam

192. Clement Arledge, born Abt. 1775; died 1821-1822 in Fairfield County, SC. He was the son of 384. Isaac Arledge and 385. Anna. Notes for Clement Arledge: There is a problem with this genealogy. Clement was supposedly born around 1775, but his children are shown to be born soon after (Cyrus born in 1783). Need to go back to sources...

Clement was married twice. See the will of 1821 Fairfield County, South Carolina. He may have served in the American Revolution. Clement appears in the 1800 census of Fairfield District, South Carolina. The age range code in his household in this census was 01100-1130101. Page 233. There is a note in the Featherston line. Richard (d. 1821, son of John Featherston Sr.) m. Ann Arledge dau/of Clement Arledge + Martha Ginn. Haven't made this connection yet (which Clement and Martha?). Was Ann the sister of Cyrus, who married Lucy Featherston?

Age Range Code Interpreted:

i. Ann Arledge, married (1) Warren; married (2) Richard Featherston. Notes for Richard Featherston:

ii. Jephthat Arledge, born in Fairfield County, SC; died Jan 18, 1853 in Fairfield County, SC. Notes for Jephthat Arledge: He was in Fairfield County in 1829 with 10 members in his household. Franklin Rudolph Aldridge lists him as Jephmiah instead of Jephthat. F.R. Aldridge also says he may be the same as Samuel or Daniel, living with his brother in Limestone Co., AL in 1850, age 74.

iii. Clement Arledge, born in Fairfield County, SC; died Aug 1851 in Franklin County, TN; married Martha Ginn. Notes for Martha Ginn: Still need to prove this link. There is a note in the Featherston line. Richard (d. 1821, son of John Featherston Sr.) m. Ann Arledge dau/of Clement Arledge + Martha Ginn. Haven't made this connection yet (which Clement and Martha?). Was Ann the sister of Cyrus, who married Lucy Featherston?

iv. Ely Arledge. Notes for Ely Arledge: Ely moved first to Chester County, SC, and then to Jackson County Alabama.

96 v. Cyrus Arledge, born 1783 in Fairfield County, SC; died Jul 04, 1852 in Limestone County, AL; married Lucy Featherston.

vi. Isaac Arledge, born Abt. 1785; died in Limestone County, AL; married Bell. Notes for Isaac Arledge: The 1850 census for Limestone Co. AL says Isaac is 65 years old, putting his birth year at 1785. The 1860 census puts him at 78 years old, putting his birth year at 1782.

History of the Aldridge/Arledge Surname From the Aldridge/Arledge Family Homepage Variations of the Name

In many old records are found variations of the name that differ from today's commonly used spellings. The many orthographies in which the name is found are: Aldriche, Aldritch, Aldrige, Aldrigge, Aldretch, Aldrech, Aldredge, Aldridgh, Aldrigh, Aldridge, Aldrich, Aldreidge, Aldrage, Alldredge, Alldridge, Aldred, Allred, Alred, Auldridge, Arledge, Oldridge and others. The most common spellings today are: Aldridge, Alldredge, Aldredge, Aldred, Allred, Alred, Aldrich and Arledge.

Origin of the Name

One writer says the name derives from a Saxon word - "Aldred" meaning old or ancient - also "Ald" and "Eld" means old. The first syllable of the name Aldridge, viz, "Ald" is a corruption of the English word "Auld." The last syllable is from a word meaning "point of land or ridge." The Welsh pronunciation is "redge," sometimes sounding nearly like "retch." When our ancient people decided to have a surname, they were living in a primitive manner in the hills of Wales as freemen. To designate themselves, they were known as the people from the "Auld Ridge," this being the designation of their chain of hills, which was known far and wide as "The Auld Ridge."

History of the Name

One of the first references to this name in England is Aldred, or Ealdred, or Alred who became Abbot of Tavistock in 1027, Bishop of Worcester in 1044, and Archbishop of York in 1060. This man died at York in 1069. He undertook several diplomatic missions to the Continent, and was the first English bishop to visit Jerusalem in 1058. It has been alleged that he crowned Harold in 1066; he certainly crowned William the Conqueror, and proved a faithful servant to the Norman king. He was active and courageous, but ambitious, greedy and self-seeking.

Families bearing this name were to be found at early dates in the English counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Oxford, Derby, Surrey, Hants, Stafford and London. Records indicate that they were, for the most part, of the landed gentry and yeomanry of Great Britain. In early American records the name of Aldrich and Aldridge are used interchangeably and, in some cases, are even confused with the name Eldridge or Eldredge.

One of the earliest known lines of the family in England was that of William Aldrich, who was Bailiff of Yarmouth, County Norfolk, as early as the year 1468 and possibly before. Another early branch of the family in England was that of Robert Aldriche or Aldrich, who resided in Staffordshire before the beginning of the 17th century, having been born about 1575. While it is not definitely known from which of the several lines of the family in England the first emigrant of the name to America was descended, it is generally believed that most, if not all, of the Aldrichs and the Aldridges derive from a common ancestor of a remote period.

One Robert Aldridge appears to be the first Aldridge that set his foot on the soil of the new country called America. What day or year he arrived is not known, or if he had a family. The record only says, "Muster of inhabitants across the water at Virginia, 1624/25. Those that lie in ye Treasurors Plantation at James City ", on the dead list "at these Plantations" is the name of Robert Aldridge.

Robert Aldred left England in June 1635 for Virginia. Robert Aldred was brought into the county of Nansemond, Virginia 1650 by John Perrott and may be the ancestor of the Aldred family that later appears in North Carolina. If these two are the same person, he may have stopped over at Barbados a few years before coming on to Virginia. Nansemond County was formed in 1637 from New Norfolk (called Upper Norfolk until 1642).

Another early arrival to Virginia was one Francis Aldridge. He is mentioned in a grant of land provided to Bridges Freeman in 1637 for transporting, at Freeman's cost, 16 persons to America. Francis Aldridge was one of the 16 transportees. His wife was Jane, and he left a will upon his death in 1678 in Norfolk County, Virginia. He mentions no children.

Nicholas Aldred is also found in the early records of Virginia. Here the spelling is found as "Aldred" which may be "Aldridge." Land transactions in 1645 and 1655 involving this man appear in the Isle of Wight County Virginia - Deed Book A. He is also mentioned in the will of Edward Chetwine, Isle of Wight County, dated 7 Sept. 1647.

Other early arrivals in Virginia were Thomas, George, William and Clement Aldridge. Here we find in the records various spellings of the name, and perhaps the origin of the orthography "Arledge" which is very commonly used today.

More detailed information on these early immigrants and many others is available in the book by Franklin Rudolph Aldridge, Aldridge Records Volume II.

The Arledge Variation

It appears that the name or spelling "Arledge" first originated in America, a corrupted form of Aldridge or Aldrich. __________________________________________________________________________ _______________________ From Pam Wilson's file: The name of Clement's wife or wives is not known at this time.

From Ancestors of Clay W. G. FULCHER, Jr.:

768. Isaac Arledge, born Abt. 1721 in Northumberland County, VA; died 1772-1789 in Fairfield County, SC. He was the son of 1536. William Arledge/Aldridge and 1537. Sarah Alire. He married 769. Elizabeth. 769. Elizabeth.

Notes for Isaac Arledge: Isaac probably moved from Northumberland County, VA, to New Bern, Craven Co., NC with his guardian, John Callahan, who went there after 1738. He was first apprenticed to Callahan, then made his ward. His apprenticeship would have ended about 1742. He was to learn the trade of a weaver. (It is somewhat unusual for the master to later be named guardian to his apprentices. The best reason for it being done was so that he could take them with him when he left the county.) Isaac was born in December 1721, probably on Christmas day. He was bound an apprentice to Callahan on 21 Aug. 1728, "he being six years old last Christmas," and was to serve to age 21.

Six months later, Callahan was made guardian to both Isaac and Sarah. But he did not leave the county immediately. He was still in Northumberland Co. in 1738, but left soon afterward. The next record of him is in North Carolina.

At some point Isaac moved to Fairfield County, South Carolina. He and his son, Isaac Jr. are listed as members of the Broad River Church.

Children of Isaac Arledge and Elizabeth are:

i. Moses Arledge, died 1790-1791 in Fairfield County, SC; married Susanna.

384 ii. Isaac Arledge, born Abt. 1747; died Abt. 1790 in Fairfield County, SC; married Anna.

1728, Northumberland County, VA. At the death of his father, William, in 1724 and his mother Sarah (whose estate was administered in 1727): "ISAAC Orphant of WILLIAM ARLEDGE is bound aprentis to JOHN CALLAHAN until he arrives to the age of 21 years he being Six years old last Christmas in consideration whereof the said Callahan doth oblige himself to find the said Orphant Sufficient and Cleanly Lodging Cloathing and Diet and to learn him to Read and write and the Trade of a weaver. (It is somewhat unusual for the master to later be named guardian to his apprentices. The best reason for it being done was so that he could take them with him when he left the county.) The next record of him was from North Carolina.

14 Jan 1748. At some point Isaac moved to the Fairfield County, South Carolina, area. Alice Sekanick (1994, p. 63) writes that there is a 1748 SC record of "an ISAAC ARLEDG witnessing, by making a mark, a sale of land 'in the low grounds of Santee (Congaree) River, opposite Saxegotha [Saxa Gotha] Township.'" [Her source: Clara A. Langley, ed. South Carolina Deed Abstracts 1755-1768, Vol. III (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1984), p. 219.] Graham Louer writes (personal correspondence): 14 Jan 1748, Isaac witnessed land sale (John FRASER to Jacob PENNINGTON) low grounds of Santee (Congaree) River, opposite Saxegotha Twp--other witnesses included Roger PAGETT (See Deed Abstracts v. 3, p. 219). Was this in Camden District? Are there records for Isaac's land acquisitions prior to this date? This 1748 deed is not listed in the SC State Archives index that I have, but if it is true it is the earliest record of an Arledge in SC.

She may not have been aware of all the other transactions (below) in which one of the Isaac Arledges figured.

The following are listings for Isaac ALDRIDGE/ARLEDGE's involvement in land transactions in all of SC prior to the formation of Fairfield County. It is not clear which of these is attributed to the elder Isaac (b. 1721) and which to his nephew. It might be possible to map the land patterns, since the younger Isaac would likely have stayed in the same general area as his mother Elizabeth, her husband Mathias Fellows, and his uncle William Aldridge. On the other hand, the elder Isaac seemed to take his own path and not settle as close to his brothers' families.

Graham Louer (personal correspondence) writes: "Although Isaac Sr. died in 1790, the estate sale was evidently not held until 7 December 1798 (unless there was also an earlier sale). A possible reason might be, I suppose, that they waited until Isaac's widow Anna had also passed away, as stipulated in the will. Then, the sale wasn't certified by Clement, one of the executors (with Joseph), until 27 February 1802. (The estate appraisal was completed on 13 February 1791.)"

Graham Louer has carefully tracked the Arledge family through the Fairfield legal records in the aftermath of patriarch Isaac's death. On 20 August 1798, he writes, daughter Rachel and husband Mabry Hill "signed away Rachel's share of the estate for the sum of 20 pounds paid by Isaac and William Arledge....Others who signed receipts (so far found) for their share of the estate" [include]: CALEB on 25 January 1800 (50 shillings from Clement); SARAH BISHOP on 27 April 1800 (2 pounds 10 chillings from Clement); ANNE BISHOP on 3 June 1800 (2 pounds 10 shillings from Clement); and WILLIAM ARLEDGE, ISAAC ARLEDGE, JESSE GINN and AMOS ARLEDGE on 22 July 1803 for unspecified amounts. [Beside the entry for Jesse Ginn, Louer has noted "This would be for Jesse Wright."

Louer continues, "As yet no record has been seen of payments to the remaining two legatees, Joseph and Clement, who were the executors. (It was also the custom or law, apparently, not to make distribution to legatees until they came of age or married). At any rate, both Sarah Bishop and Anne Bishop were presumably widowed by the time they received their shares, since each signed for herself." (Graham Louer, personal correspondence, 1998)

DISCUSSION OF THE ISAAC ARLEDGE PROBLEM in FAIRFIELD CO, SC _________________________

There is some confusion about which Isaac Arledge various Fairfield Co, SC records refer to. The work of Alice Sekanick (The Hutchison Family, 1994) has brought to light some important records. An older ("Isaac , Sr.") and a younger Isaac ("Isaac Jr.") are listed as members of the Broad River Baptist Church in Fairfield County, SC, "whose members were scattered between the Broad and Wateree Rivers." Sekanick also notes that "each of these men received grants for 200 acres on Crooked Creek of the Wateree River. This area is desginated as Aldridge's Shoals on very early maps. Since land grants were based on headwrights, with 50 acres allotted to each person, [the two Isaacs] each had four family members in their households at the time of their grants. Surveys are dated 1765 for [one] Isaac and 1768 for [the other] Isaac." [ Sources: Sekanick, 1994, p. 64. Her sources are Leah Townsend, South Carolina Baptists 1670-1805 (Florence, SC: Florence Printing Company, 1935), p. 173; Brent Holcomb ed. Some South Carolina County Records, Vol. 1 (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1981)]

A search of early SC land records actually shows a much more extensive pattern of Aldridge/Arledge land transactions than indicated above. It shows land acquisitions on or along Wateree Creek, Wateree River, the Edisto River, and Dutchman's Creek, among other places, by at least three Aldridge/Arledge relatives (John, William and Isaac) starting as early as 1749. See the list I sent earlier.

It seems that researchers on this family keep finding new Isaac Arledges as time goes by. Both Franklin R. Aldridge and Rulon C. Allred, according to Alice Sekanick, were "unaware that there were two Isaac Arledges" and conflated the records of the Isaacs (Sekanick, 1994, FN, p. 235). Sekanick's work provides some important distinctions. Yet like her predecessors, she was unaware of yet another Isaac Arledge whose existence causes her interpretations to need re-examination. Alice Sekanick proposed that, "based on the preceding information, a reasonable case can be made for the following scenario": in summary, she speculates that Isaac, the son of William + Sarah, married Elizabeth; that he died between 1772-1789, his widow married Mathias Fellows; his children included Isaac and Moses. Then, she speculates, this younger Isaac became the Fairfield County patriarch married to Anna, who was the father of Joseph, Clement, Amos, Caleb et al.

However, I respectfully disagree with this interpretation by Sekanick. New information sheds a different light on the relationships. Based upon all existing evidence available to me today (1998), I believe that the "Isaac Jr" in her scenario was not the son but was rather the nephew of "Isaac Sr" (b. 1721), and that indeed, as F.R. Aldridge had concluded, the patriarch of the Fairfield Co, SC Arledge clan (who died in 1790) was the same Isaac who was born in Northumberland Co, VA in 1721. I believe there were THREE Isaacs who figure into this scenario in Fairfield between 1750 and 1820, rather than just two: the elder Isaac (1721-1790, married Anna/Hannah), his nephew (born 1730-1740, died 1820, married Sallie McCormick), and the elder Isaac's son (born after 1769, died 1847, married Lydia Hughes). I believe that Sekanick conflated these three into two.

Based upon incomplete evidence that I hope will be found (missing wills, etc.), here are the relationships as I see them. It seems that there were three sons of William Aldridge of Northumberland County who migrated to SC: William (b.c. 1704), John (b.c. 1706) and Isaac (b. 1721). [Another son Clement moved to Bertie or Granville County, NC; his son Isaac (another one!) settled in Randolph County, NC. I will not consider him at this time.] Keep in mind that Isaac was William (Sr)'s son by his second wife, Sarah, so was considerably (15-20 years) younger than his older half brothers.

I believe that the Elizabeth in question (nee Elizabeth Thomas of Northumberland Co, VA, daughter of Richard Thomas), was married to one of the older brothers, probably John--not Isaac, as Sekanick has proposed--and together they had at least three children: Isaac, Moses (note: Moses was a Thomas family name) and Lydia (who married William Millar). She was named in her father's 1741 will as Elizabeth Aldridge, so she was married prior to this time, and probably still in VA. [It is unlikely that Isaac was married by 1741 since he was in New Bern as an apprentice to John Callahan.] "John ARLEDGE of Virginia" (and presumably Elizabeth) applied for in 1749, and received in 1750, a royal grant along the Wateree River near present-day Camden, SC. Elizabeth was widowed from her Arledge husband prior to her remarriage to Matthias Fellows. Elizabeth Arledge received a royal grant of 100 acres on Dutchman's Creek in Craven County beside William Arledge on 12 Dec 1766; on 6 Oct 1767 this was certified for Mathias Fellewis. I believe she was widowed by the time she received this grant; also, I believe this provides evidence that she was *not* married to William (since he still seems to be alive and kicking at this time). It seems she probably had the land grant certified for Fellows upon their marriage. If not, then she married Fellows later, at least prior to his 1789 will. His will names "her son" Moses Arledge, as well as Isaac Arledge and Lydia Millar (also presumably her children). They are also named in a nasty litigation brought against the Arledge family by Moses' widow Susannah over her share of Moses' inheritance when she remarried Charles McDaniel (1791-1795).

Okay, so we have the elder Isaac who probably came to SC in the late 1740s, about the same time as his brother John and William. Sekanick speculates, and I agree, that Isaac was probably married twice, since his younger children were born late in his life and were a great deal younger than the older children. His second wife was Anna or Hannah. In his 1789 will, he remarked that sons Isaac and William were not yet of age, so that means they were born after 1768-9 if they were under 21. Older sons were Joseph, Amos, Clement and Amos, and all of them were born by the mid-1750s, based upon their ages being listed as "over 45" in the 1800 census.

This means we have (a) Isaac 1721-1790 son of William + Sarah, with a 1789 Fairfield Co, SC will; his children were Joseph, Caleb, Clement, Amos, Huldah, Anne, Rachel, Sarah, William, Isaac (c) (b) Isaac c 1735?-1820 son of Elizabeth and ?John [son of William + Alice, so half-brother of Isaac (A)], who lived in Fairfield County until 1804, when he moved to Rutherford County (with Amos) and died 1820 with a Rutherford Co, NC will (he was the foster father of Harriett, who married Amos' son Jonathan, and who was the matriarch of the Polk County ARLEDGE clan) and (c) Isaac born aft. 1769 (died 1847), son of Isaac (A) and Hannah, lived whole life in Fairfield Co. He married Lydia Hughes, and his children were William, Isaac, John, Austin, James, Charlotte, Eliza and Lydia. I suspect that this line will prove to be fruitful for many of our "unconnected branches"of the Arledge tree, like the Martin, Jonathan and William Arledge families....

If you try to assign deeds and other documents to one of these three, at times it becomes difficult to know which of at least tow of them the deed might apply to. Both Isaac (A) and Isaac (B) were active in Fairfield County affairs in the late 1700s, and for some of the land records from the 1760s-1780s it is unclear which of these men is involved. Since Isaac (C) did not come of age until around 1800, then it is clear that the many references to an Isaac Arledge in the 1790s are to Isaac (B). Fortunately, Isaac (B) left Fairfield County in 1804, so after that time it is clear that most references can be attributed to Isaac (C) -- at least until *his* son Isaac comes of age in the 1830s!

NOTE WITH HISTORICAL INFORMATION: On April 27, 1998, URQ5 <URQ5@@aol.com> wrote on SCROOTS-L@@rootsweb.com:

In 1730, eight townships were established in SC-- all within 60 miles of the coast + all related to the state's river systems.

1. Williamsburg ( Black River, Kingstree area) 2. Purrysburg (Savannah River, Aiken/Augusta area) 3. Saxe- Gotha (Congaree River, Columbia/lower Richland Co. area) 4. Orangeburg (N. Edisto River, mid- state area) 5. Amelia (Congaree/Wateree Rivers junction, Sumter area) 6. Fredericksburg (Wateree River, above Amelia) 7. Queensboro (Pee Dee River, Cheraw area) 8. Kingston (Waccamaw River, Conway area)

As the population spread inland from the coast, it became too difficult to go to Charleston for business transactions + there was a need for a more accessible court system. In 1739, eight circuit court districts were established. As time went on and people used the court district names to refer to areas, use of some of the old township names declined (such as Fredericksburg) while some areas are still referred to by the old names (such as the Williamsburg area--without the township of course). The circuit court districts were:

768 i. Isaac Arledge, born Abt. 1721 in Northumberland County, VA; died 1772-1789 in Fairfield County, SC; married Elizabeth.

ii. Sarah Arledge, born 1724-1725. Notes for Sarah Arledge: Sarah probably also went to North Carolina with her guardian, John Callahan. [Sarah and Isaac were the children of William's second wife, Sarah. The other four children were older, although William and John were still under the age of 20 when their father wrote his will on 25 Aug. 1724.]

Note from Connie Moretti:

"Chester County, S. C. has deeds available from the date the county was formed in 1785. Prior to that, deeds are in the Camden District or in Craven County both of which were discontinued but the records may be in the state archives. Land Records of whatever sort may be your best bet for going back farther."

Children of William Arledge/Aldridge and Alice Fallin are:

i. William Arledge, born Abt. 1704 in Northumberland County, VA; died Abt. 1770; married Mary.

ii. John Aldridge/Aldred, born May 16, 1704 in Northumberland County, VA; died in Randolph County, NC; married Annie Hamilton Jun 11, 1733 in Stafford County, VA. Notes for John Aldridge/Aldred: John was married twice. His first wife is unknown.

iii. Clement Arledge, born 1708 in Northumberland County, VA; died Abt. 1790; married Ann. Notes for Clement Arledge: Sold his land in Northumberland Co. on 9 May 1743, and removed from the area.

There is a note in the Featherston line. Richard (d. 1821, son of John Featherston Sr.) m. Ann Arledge dau/of Clement Arledge + Martha Ginn. Haven't made this connection yet (which Clement and Martha and Ann?).

iv. Jane Arledge, born Abt. 1710 in Northumberland County, VA. Notes for Jane Arledge: She was still living in 1724.

Teri Allred's Aldridge + Allred of the South Newsletter (Summer 1993, p. 12):

ALRED NAME IN NORTHUMBERLAND CO., VIRGINIA, 1694

Ever hear about Henry ALRED in Northumberland County, Virginia or any instance of the spelling ALRED there? In the process of examining all instances of ALDRIDGE and ALLRED (and the variations) as found in SWEM [Swem, E. G., VIRGINIA HISTORICAL INDEX, Vol. I, Gloucester, MA, 1965], we discovered this information:

"Nov. 22, 1694 Henry ALRED, assignee of Wm. Dickinson by his atty, Richard HAYNIE, declared that Thomas Hobson did bind and oblige himself to pay unto Wm. Dickinson of Somerset Co., in the Province of Md. or to his heirs, 10,300 pounds of tobacco upon demand after Oct. 1693. Sarah Dickinson was the executor of her brother, John WEBB's will, and in D. B. 1699 to '13 is named as Sarah Dickinson, former wife of Thos. Hobson dec'd. Sarah Webb Hobson, widow of Thos. Hobson, Sr. mar. 2d Wm. Dickinson of Md. Capt. Thomas Hobson (1665-1717), the son of Thomas Hobson and Sarah Wehb, was "the most prominent member of this family. He was a county clerk, Captain of militia, church warden, and Burgess from Northumberland." Further, "On Oct. 25, 1710 during the incumbency of Capt. Hobson as clerk, a fire at the courthouse destroyed many of the record books from 1672. Some of the old wills and deeds were recorded again in a book provided especially for that purpose and described as follows: 'This Book contains the Records of Those papers which have been presented unto the County Court of Northumberland and by the Justices of the said Court admitted to record again, they having been formerly recorded and the books of Records in which they had been recorded burned with the office, the 25th day of October Anno Domini, one thousand seven hundred and ten. Test. Thos. Hobson -- Clerk. [in Tyler, Lyon G., M.A., LL.D, Editor, TYLER'S QUARTERLY HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE, Vol.VIII, Richmond Press, Inc., Printers, Richmond, VA, 1927, pp. 128-129 (Thomas Hobson and Some of His Descendants).

Haven't we seen the name HAYNIE before in connection with our family? Ah, yes...the very same Richard HAYNIE, called Capt. Richard HAYNIE. an influential official and one of the Justices of the County Court when the "prolonged contest" began between him and William ALDRIDGE on 17 August 1705 [see Allred, Rulon C., ALLRED FAMILY IN AMERICA, Wm. R. Bishoff, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1966, Introduction, pp. 1-76 through 1-78]. Capt. HAYNIE lost the case and then began suing (at least until 17 Sept. 1707) William ALDRIDGE, whose name is spelled ARLEDGE at least half of the time. After that, William ALDRIDGE or ARLEDGE was suing or being sued for some time. He was once fined (23 Sept. 1715) for "absenting himself from Church for two months." _______________________

The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997: "Although the surname Aldridge was used interchangeably with Arledge or Arlege throughout the 1600s, the children of William Arledge used Arledge more than Aldridge. William left the following children: 1. William Arledge 2. John Arledge, d. circa 1730 leaving a son, John Arledge, who was bound to William Owens to learn carpentry. [WHAT IS THE SOURCE?] 3. Clement Arledge, m. (1) ? and (2) Ann. He sold his land in Northumberland Co. on 9 May 1743, and removed from the area. [SOURCE?] 4. Jane Arledge 5. Isaac Arledge, b. circa 1721, and probably moved to New Bern, Craven Co., NC with his guardian, John Callahan, who went there after 1738. (He was first apprenticed to Callahan, then made his ward.) 6. 1724.]"
