Date: 12/10/98 20:35 Hi Sue + Mike, Ruth, and June,
There is so much to type, that I am sending this to three addresses. My aunts know that I found this, but here is where it came from.
I went down to the Orlando library, and found an unbelievable genealogy department. There I found a Whitley Co. history book with several articles on the Tyes. The book is titled Whitley County History Book, written by WCH Book Committee, Turner Publishing Co., 1994. There is an article on our William Tye. I copied it, but the print is so small and faint, that we don't think it will scan. I'll try making copies, but here is most of one article:
William Tye was born circa 1807, to Elizabeth Tye. Elizabeth was a daughter of John Tye III (1737-1833). John Tye, a Revolutionary War Veteran, built the first house in what became Whitley Co., KY. William was reported to be five feet, nine inches tall, dark skin, blue eyes, and brown hair. His early life was spent in eastern Whitley Co., near the Cumberland River. Most likely his childhood wasn't easy, but better than most of the area. William's grandpa, and uncle Joshua (1788-1870) were among the more comfortable in the area. (I also read that Joshua owned over 40 slaves in some other articles.) On March 19, 1828, William Tye married Nancy Harp (1812-1882). Nancy was a daught of Benager and Jane Moody Harp, who were married in 1810. Benager Harp was the son of Rev. War Veteran, Tobias Harp. (and Delilah Carroll) William and Nancy built a life for themselves. Will became a farmer and a blacksmith. As with many people in the area, the years of the Civil War changed their lives forever. Will enlisted on Sept. 28, 1861, at Camp Wildcat. He became a private in Company G, 7th Kentucky Infantry. While serving, Will contracted typhoid fever, and suffered from exposure. Evidence also states that Will served a a hospital nurse. Will was discharged from service Jan. 13, 1863, at Memphis, TN. The reason for his discharge was given as "Old Age". Before the Civil War however, Will and Nancy raised a large family. Due to the Tye families using the same names over and over, it is very hard to trace these lines. Here is a llist of Will's children: George W. (circa 1867-1929) Elizabeth Jane "Jane" Tye (1832-1911) Ben (ca. 1833-?), John (ca. 1835-?) Obedience (1838-1888) Henry H. (1840-1924) Joseph (ca. 1843-abt. 1900) William (ca. 1844-?) Alvis/Clarence (ca. 1849-?) Robert Bob "R.B." (1851-1938) Mary Nancy Ann (ca. 1852-?). William and Nancy raised their family in the Spruce Creek area of Whitley County.
The article goes on to tell who some of the children married. George W. Tye married Louisa Mayfield, and then Mary Stanfield. He had a total of 10 children with both wives. Of these, his son, Will F. Tye (1857-1925), probably has the most descendants in Whitley Co. He married Mahala J. Hart in 1878.
It tells about Jane and Richard, and says that Obedience married "Judge" Henry "H. C." Harmon (1834-1909) in 1855. They raised a large family, and are buried in the Redbird Cemetery on the Cumberland River. Henry H. married Lucy Belcher Ward (1839-1916) in 1859. They had nine children, and are buried at Ward Cemetery. Her parents and much of her family are also buried there. Joseph H. married Elizabeth J. Hamlin in 1865. Joe and Elizabeth were distant cousins. They had 8 children. R. B. became a well-known Baptist minister and evangelist. In 1869, He married Permelia Hart (1850-1923), daughter of John and Elizabeth Terrell Hart. They had 10 children, and are buried in the Hart Cemetery at Meadow Creek. After she died, he married a cousin, Emeline Tye, who had helped take care of Permelia until she died. These articles were written by Steven H. Alsip and Mary Mae Smith.
Another article about John Tye says that he had three sons and one daughter by his first wife: John, Joshua, George, and Elizabeth. It says that the other four daughters were by his second wife. This article was written by D. D. Faulkner, age 78, in August 1950. Different articles tell about John, and his sons, John Jr. and Joshua, being attacked by Indians, and John Jr. being killed.
After finding all of this, I have come across the marriage record of Joshua's son, William Cummins Tye, born in 1827 in KY, who married Mary Elizabeth Prichard in 1846. So there were two different Williams, and ours was born to Elizabeth, the sister of Joshua who didn't marry, as far as I can tell.
I still don't understand why Nancy Tye's stone says "1812-1832", but in light of all of these articles, and the censuses showing a Nancy of the right age, I am going to have 1882 as her date of death, unless I prove otherwise, in my ancestor report.
I have added some other dates and names to my report. In addition to all this, there was a famous writer, Richard Alsop (1761-1815), born in Middletown, Conn., who I am sure, is related to us. I also think that a John Alsop from England, born bet. 1637-1666, who married a Temperance Gilbert, born bet. 1646-1669, was probably the first of our Alsops to come over to this country. I am working on this connection.
I'll stop for now, and concentrate on decorating for Christmas. Take care. Love, Penny
