The table at the left shows the first settlers in the
Irish Settlement according to All Our Yesterdays
- A History of Culross. The cells in the tables are
approximately proportional to the actual farms and are
color-coded according to ethnic groupings. Information on
religion and nationality is taken from the 1871 Canada
Census.
Most of the Irish Catholics in the Irish Settlement came
from County Mayo. It appears that they were part of a
pattern of "chain" migration from the vicinity of
Ballina which lasted from about 1830 to 1865. The families
which were involved in this were the Lynetts, McGlynns,
Meehans and Foudys. Other families which may have been
involved were the O'Malleys, Taughers, Quinns, McGues,
Mahoneys and Morans. There are links to other settlements
in the Toronto area. I suspect that there is a link to
families with the same names living near Scranton, Pa.
Note that this is turned roughly 90 degrees
from a map - north is to the left.
