The Location of Culross Township

Covering, as it does, the north-western portion of what is generally know as the "Western Peninsula" of Ontario, the County of Bruce is bounded on the west side by Lake Huron; on the east by Georgian Bay and the County of Grey; and on the south by the County of Huron.

"Culross is situated in the southern tier of townships, lying between Carrick and Kinloss on the east and west, having Greenock on the north , and Turnberry, in the County of Huron, on the south." - Illustrated Atlas of the County of Bruce 1880.

Culross Township is approximately 9 miles (15 km) square and covers about 57000 acres. Several different plans were used for surveying townships in Ontario. Culross followed a typical plan for this part of Ontario, there were 15 east-west "concessions" (numbered I to XV) and one north-south concession (named A) on the boundary with Carrick. Each numbered concession was divided into 35 lots of about 100 acres. Roads were built between every second concession and every fifth sideroad. This resulted in a grid of one and one quarter mile squares each containing 10 farms of 100 acres.
