First Generation
1. Peter Jordan TYLER was born about 1752 in North
Carolina. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Warren Co., Kentucky.1 Peter Tyler is listed as head
of a household containing:
6 males</=10 yrs. (prob. Thomas abt 10, Edmund abt 8, Allen abt 6, Uriah abt
2, Earl abt 1, and maybe Preston as an infant)
1 male 10-16 yrs. (prob. Solomon abt 12)
1 male 16-26 yrs. (prob. Baker, abt 17)
1 male 45+yrs. (Peter, about 58)
1 female </=10 yrs. (could be an infant Silviah or a 10 year old Lavina)
3 females 10-16 yrs. (prob. Ruth abt 14, Scina abt 10 and Levisa abt 11)
1 female 16-26 yrs.(probably Mary abt 20)
1 female 26-45 yrs. (Rachael, prob. about 45)
No slaves or Indians.
We don't know if all of Peter's children were single births. There is always
the possibility, with that many children, that a set or two of twins is in there,
but I don't know of any at this time.
He appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1830 in Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory.2 Peter Tylor is listed as head
of a household containing:
1 male 5<10 (Is this a youngest child who died before Peter's will was written
two years later, or a visiting grandson? The missing Solomon Hulsey? We'll
probably never know!)
2 males 15<20 (My guess is that these are Preston, abt 19 and Lindville, abt
17. It could read 1 or 2 males. The number is almost a 2, since there is a
bit of loop at the bottom, but it's not as clear as the other ones or twos on
the page)
1 male 70<80 (Peter, abt 78)
1 female 15<20 (Elafair, abt 15)
1 female 20<30 (Silviah, abt 20)
1 female 50-60 (Rachael)
It looks like the census taker first wrote Taylor, then drew a leading line from
the T across the "a" to make it Tylor instead.
He signed a will on 9 Feb 1832 in Lawrence Co., Arkansas Territory.3 Will of Peter Tyler, transcribed
by Rebecca Lambert, 22 July 1998

witnesses to the foregoing last Will and
Testament of Peter Tyler, and after being
duly sworn for that purpose, testify and
say that said Peter Tyler at the time of ma-
king his will was of sound and disproving mind
and that he subscribed his name to the same
in their presence and appeared to fully un-
derstand the true intent and meaning of the
same, and that they were called upon to wit-
ness the same, and that they did subscribe
their names to the same in his presence.
In his will, Peter Tyler's wife is identified as Rachel. It is likely, however,
that he had more than one wife as his twenty children seem to have been born
over a span of at least thirty-five years. The surnames of some of Peter's sons-in-law
are known because he used those names in his will.
Rachel's surname (Wolfe) was provided by F. N. Hines, a descendant of Peter's
son, Baker.
Peter's middle name was provided by F. N. Hines.
His children are basically in the order they were presented in the will and many
birthdates are estimated from census records.
The youngest four children received specific bequests in Peter's will while the
older ones (presumed independent and already married) received one dollar. Peter
had probably already provided things for them, so concerned himself with leaving
his youngest four children provided for.
He died before 23 Apr 1832 in Powhatan, Lawrence, Arkansas Territory.
His will was proved, so he died before then.
It is speculated that Peter Tyler and his brother/relatives were Loyalists
during the American Revolution. There are records of a hearing about the Llewellen
Conspiracy involving William and Peter Tyler, but we can't prove he is our Peter
Tyler, beyond it being a man of the right name at the right time and place.
Perhaps lingering anti-Loyalist sentiment is why he removed from North Carolina
to the wilds of Kentucky.
Peter Jordan TYLER and Rachel (WOLFE?) were married before 1810 in Kentucky.
Peter married a Rachel, possibly a Rachel Wolfe, who may be the Rachel in
his will.
If Rachael is the same wife he had on the 1810 KY census and 1830 AR Terr.
census (and in his will), then she could not be the mother of his oldest few
children, because she was born 1770-1780.
She may well be the mother of all of his Kentucky-born children, but because
of her birthdate possibilites from the census, we can conclude that Peter had
at least two wives.
Rachel (WOLFE?) was born between 1770 and 1780.
She died before 1850 in Arkansas. There is a Rachel Tyler on
the tax list for Strawberry Twp., Lawrence, AR Territory in 1833.
We haven't found Rachel Tyler on census records in 1840 or 1850, so we don't
know when she died. Two sons have a 60-70 year old woman living with them in
1840: Edmund and Earl Clifford Tyler. Either man could have a mother-in-law
living with the family. Peter Jordan TYLER and Rachel (WOLFE?) had the following
children:
2 | i. | John B. TYLER was born about 1778 in North
Carolina. Nothing is currently known about this John Tyler.
| +3 | ii. | James TYLER. | +4 | iii. | William

S. TYLER. | +7 | vi. | Baker TYLER. | +8 | vii. | Ruth TYLER. | 9 | viii. | Solomon TYLER
was born about 1798 in Kentucky. Nothing definite is currently
known about our Solomon Tyler.
There is a Soloman Tyler in Martinsville, Warren, Kentucky in 1820 (HeritageQuest
census images). He is head of a household containing:
1 free white male 16<26 (our Soloman is prob. about 22)
1 person engaged in agriculture (presumably Soloman)
There is a Solomon Tyler in Warren Co., Kentucky in 1830. Perhaps elderly
grandparents or other in-laws are living with him, since the household contains:
1 male 10<15
1 male 30<40 (Solomon, abt 32)
1 male 80<90
1 female <5
1 female 20<30
1 female 80-90
Both the elderly male and female are too old to be either Solomon or his wife's
parents, if they really are each 80 or older.
There is a Solomon Tyler on the 1834 tax list for Crawford Co., Arkansas Territory.
There is a land patent for a Solomon Tyler in Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1840,
for 80 acres.
