| Ancestors of Rhoda Atkinson
Generation No. 1 1. Rhoda Atkinson, born October 20, 1777
in NC; died March 26, 1840 in Greene County, GA. She was the daughter of
2. Nathan Atkinson and 3. Martha
(Patsey) Whitehead. She married (1) Hiram
Rowland September 22, 1794 in Oglethorpe County, GA. He was the
son of Frederick Rowland and Sealey
Huckaby.
Notes for Rhoda Atkinson: Joseph W. Watson - Abstracts of Early Deeds of Nash County, North Carolina,
Books 1-6. p. 126 "Deed Book 3-443. Nathan Atkinson and Martha Atkinson
Notes for Hiram Rowland: Greene Co., GA Land Records, Deed 1785-1810, abstracted by Freda R. Turner: "John Luck of Greene Co. sold to Thomas McGuire on 31 Dec. 1800 190 acres in Greene Co, bounded by Isaac McGuire, Joseph Jackson, and HIRAM ROWLAND, Recorded 15 Dec. 1802., page 513." Turner . op. cit. "Ann Hodges of Greene Co. sold to Harris [sic. HIRAM] ROWLAND of Greene Co. on 23 April 1802, for the sum of $250.00, 100 acres of land in Greene County on the Bever Dam of Richland Creek. land conveyed by Gidion Harrison to Ann Hodges on 27 November 1784, including land conveyed from Gilbert Cribbs to Ann Hodges on 24 September 1796. Wit: Nathan Winfield. Recorded 6 August 1802. p. 682." This same land appears in later Rowland deeds. I believe that the Harris should read HIRAM. Turner, op. cit. " Samuel Harrell of Greene County sold to HIRAM ROWLAND of Greene County on 3 September 1806 for the sum of $250., land in Greene County. Recorded 2 March 1807, page 499" Ga Tax Digest, 1805/06. Listed as Hyram Rowland, Greene Co, p. 39. Copy of Will of Hiram Rowland from microfilms of Greene Co., GA in author's files. Marriage record list as Hiram Rolin and Rody Atkins in Oglethorpe Co., GA. He was the first Rowland to marry in Georgia. Ref: Deed of Franklin Co., NC: James Huckaby deeded land to his grandchildren: Hiram Rowland, Lissey ] Rowland, Jordan Rowland and Cressey. Rowland all of Franklin Co., NC on March 1, 1783. After studying later land records in Greene County, GA, I believe there is a chance that Creesey Rowland maybe Creasy Huckaby found in an 1808 land transaction. Did Creasy marry a Huckaby? There is also a transaction for Lucretia Huckaby (Was Creasy short for Lucretia) Checking on this. See Wills of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. June 1796 and Settlements of estate of James Huckaby, mentions wife, children named, plus names of buyer at Estate Settlement, includes two sons in law, Moses Willams and Frederick Rowland Both of these are our ancestors. Frederick Rowland on my paternal side
and Moses Williams on the maternal side, through the Reeves, Goodman connections.
For more information see the author's Rowland - Huckaby and Goodman - Reeves
- Williams - Huckaby Connection, RR Books, , 1996.

OBITUARY " William Rowland was born [on the family plantation in Greene County, Georgia] November 26, 1797 and died [at his home plantation in Greene County, Georgia] May 21 1867. He was a member of the Church [Methodist Episcopal Church, South] for forty years. He was a man of great energy and through his energy his industry and economy had amassed a large estate. And, as is too infrequent the case, his religious enjoyment was seriously interrupted by the cares that naturally grew out of worldly fortunes. His communion with his Maker, under these circumstances , was not such as to cheer and comfort him in the midst of his losses. But the lord that had been good to him did not forget him in the hour of adversity. Brother Rowland was sick a long time. He suffered much but the Lord mercifully sustained him. I visited him often and always found him ready and more willing to engage in religious direction. God in his mercy heard his prayers, and the light that had been struggling through the rifts in the cloud broke in comfort upon his heart. Thank God, though frail he conquered." T. E. P. He married a second time to Mrs. Winnie R. Newton on 2/23/1862 in Greene Co., Ga. No children by this marriage.
