Biography of Carl (Karl), George, Roy and Kasper Koberstein as reveled in the Clatskanie Journal newspaper covering the time 1950-1953.
Here is a map of where Clatskanie, Oregon is.
The first entry is June 9, 1950 and shows visits by Marie Pritchard to siblings Mrs. Fred, George and Roy.
These are all children of Kasper and Anna (Doerr) Koberstein. Kasper was born June 16 1860 in Voelkesleir, Bavaria, Germany. Anna was born August 10, 1873 in Oberliessen, Darmstadt, Germany. They had nine children.
Maria Johanna KOBERSTEIN was born 23 May 1908 in Oregon. She died 2 18 May 1996 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California. Maria married PRICHARD.
Anne Elizabeth KOBERSTEIN was born 1 about 1894 in Oregon. Anne married Thomas WEBB. Thomas was born about 1891 in California. They had the following children: Jean C. WEBB was born 1 about 1918 in Oregon.
I assume that Mrs. Fred Grannis is Rose Eva KOBERSTEIN, born 1 about 1903 in Oregon. There is a record for a Fred L. Grannis (Social Security Nunber: 542-36-1053) with a last Residence of 97016 Clatskanie, Columbia, Oregon, United States of America, who was born: 4 Feb 1899 and died: 18 Mar 1990. The wife name is not give so no connection can be made to a daughter of Kasper.
The 1930 United States Federal Census gives a Fred Grannis with his home in 1930 given as Clatskanie, Columbia, Oregon. His age is given as 31 (birth year about 1899 at Minnesota. The wife is indicated as Rose (28 years old for a birth year of about 1902 at Oregon).
The other two sister are Eva Marie KOBERSTEIN, born about 1906 in Oregon and Elizabeth Anna KOBERSTEIN "Eliza", born 5 Jul 1905 in Oregon who died 5 Apr 1990.
George Kasper KOBERSTEIN was born 19 Nov 1896 in Oregon. He died 4 6 Aug 1976 in , Multonomah, Oregon. George married Marie J. who was born about 1909 in Oregon
Leroy Joseph Adolf KOBERSTEIN was born 1 18 Sep 1917 in Oregon. He died 9 Nov 1999 in Oregon. Leroy married Alline BROCK in 1951 in Oregon. Alline was born 16 Jul 1916 in West Virginia. She died 29 Nov 1984 in Clackamas, Oregon.
A newspaper article in the Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) - November 18, 1999. states that "LeRoy A. Koberstein died Nov. 9, 1999, at age 82. A private service will be held. Mr. Koberstein was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Clatskanie. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the Pacific. A watchmaker, he owned Roy's Watch Shop in Hillsdale for about 30 years before retiring in the early 1980s. In 1951, he married Alline Brock; she died in 1984. Survivors include his sister, Eva Bryant of Battle Ground, Wash.; and sister-in-law, Eula of Portland. Interment is in Maplewood Cemetery in Clatskanie. The family suggests remembrances to the American Lung Association of Oregon. Arrangements are by Portland Funeral Alternatives."
John Otto KOBERSTEIN was born 9 May 1910 in Oregon. He died 22 Sep 1985 in Multnomah county Oregon and was buried 4 Oct 1985 in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. John married Eula B. BROCK. Eula was born 1921. Eula B. is listed in the 1998 Oregon Phone Directory at 14504 NE Rose Pkwy, Portland, OR 97230-3743, (503)254-3411 but the 1994 and 2002 Oregon Phone Directory at 4111 NE 132nd Ave.
The records I have don't show any connection between John and Roy to Seattle. This article is the first connection indicating they bought a jewelry store there. However, Roy's connection to a watch shop shows he has the professional connection to jewelry.
The last child not mentioned in this article is Carl "Karl" Henry KOBERSTEIN who was born 16 Dec 1899 in Oregon. He died 23 Oct 1981 in Orange county California. Perhaps he stayed in California during this visit.
|The Clatskanie Chief dated June 9, 1950 lists Mrs. Marie Pritchard and daughter Jeanne visiting from Los Angeles with family.|
|The next article is dated August 24, 1951 and is about the death of Carl O. Anderson. He is listed as working for Kasper Koberstein and later buying him out.||
|The next entry (August 31, 1951) records another visit.
Apparently Anna was still living in Clatskanie while Roy and George were in Oswego now.
|Here is another article from July 18, 1952.
Carl is now in San Francisco and Elizabeth from Portland but George has moved back to Clatskanie.
|This August 29, 1952 entry show George traveling to St. Helens. St. Helens
is about 32 miles south east along the Columbia river towards Portland.
It also documents a death of Harold Bristow a cousin of Anna, George and Rose (Mrs. F. L. Grannis).
|In the October 24, 1952 edition George was recorded as a visitor to Rose city. I was unable to locate Rose city on modern maps.|
|The July 3, 1953 article is a short obituary for George Koberstein. Of
genealogical interest his birth place is given as Germany and he has one
sister in Germany.
This is obviously not the George spoken of above as a brother to Anna Webb but her uncle, brother to Kasper. However the age of 70 in December 1953 gives a birth year of 1883. George Sr. the uncle was born in 1856. His son, a cousin, was reported as born in January 1880 in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. I don't know how to reconcile these numbers.
George Senior's sisters Cecelia and Catherine were both in America. The third sister died as a child in Germany. I'm not sure who the sister is mentioned in the obituary. He had two half sisters. Maria was in America, but Antonia was born in Germany and I have no record of her in the United States, this may be the sister referred to in the obituary. George Junior's two sisters were both born in Wisconsin, so that reference doesn't work for him.
|The December 25, 1953 edition notes that George, the brother, was in Portland this week.|
