2 CONT The family story was that Ernst's first wife (name unknown) died and left 
2 CONC him with 3 young children.  He sent back to Germany for a second wife. 
2 CONC His mother Minnie Fricka came to the USA and brought Paulina Hoffman with 
2 CONC her.  I don't know if this is true or not.  I got the information from 
2 CONC one of his daughters (one of my elderly Aunts) Ernst and Paulina were 
2 CONC married in either McLean or Livingston County, Ill in 1884. My Aunt said 
2 CONC that his first wife died in Germany, but it doesn't seem likely to me 
2 CONC that a man would undertake a voyage of
2 CONT that magnitude with 3 young children and not a wife to assist him. 
2 CONC Possibly Wife #1 died on the ship or shortly after arriving in USA. He 
2 CONC arrived in Baltimore in May,1880.  Paulina arrived in Baltimore in 
2 CONC November, 1880.  However they weren't married until 1884. So who knows?

2 CONC built a brick making kiln near Shaniko, Wasco County, OR and laid the 
2 CONC brick for the Shaniko Hotel probably between 1909 and 1915,. I would 
2 CONC appreciate any information on them or the hotel. Is it still standing? If 
2 CONC so could someone send me a photo? I would be happy to reinburse any

2 CONT Yes, Mary the Shaniko Hotel is still standing. Area residents enjoy the 
2 CONC history of this old town that was once considered "the wool capital of 
2 CONC the world" with cattle, wool and wheat being shipped out of the depot by 
2 CONC the train load. In 1904 the total value of wool sold was $5 million 
2 CONC dollars. Prosperity was not to last. The Dalles-California Highway  
2 CONC bypassed Shaniko in 1925, railroad passenger service ended in 1936 and 
2 CONC with regular freight service ending in 1942, Shaniko was doomed. By 1959 
2 CONC it was a bonafide ghost town and the existing buildings were allowed to 
2 CONC deteriorate. We're happy to say, although not a thriving community, 
2 CONC Shaniko once again has a few permanent residents. They have restored part 
2 CONC of the old town and especially the hotel back to its early glory. Once a 
2 CONC year local residents and area ranchers come together to celebrate and 
2 CONC recreate Shanikos earlier years. "Shaniko Days" is held the first weekend 
2 CONC in August. I believe the hotel, which is beautifully restored, is now a 
2 CONC bed and breakfast. I know we have a picture of the hotel around here 
2 CONC someplace, if you will send us your address we will be happy to send it

2 CONC strange information that follows his name. The picture is absolutely 
2 CONC correct but my grandfather, who is the son of Ernst Wilhelm, from his 
2 CONC second wife, Paulina Hoffman, was named Herman Wilhelm Koberstein. Herman 
2 CONC married his first wife, Margaret, and they adopted Ralph Koberstein. When 
2 CONC Margaret died or divorced Herman (not sure), he later married Leora and 
2 CONC they had a son Terrell L. Koberstein, my father. Terry married Bette Ann 
2 CONC Pray and had 2 children, Amy Lynn and Stacey Leigh. We know both have 
2 CONC children of our own as well.

2 CONT     Frank W. Koberstein was born July 5, 1877, in Germany about 50 miles 
2 CONC north of Berlin. He was the third child of 10 children born to Henry W. 
2 CONC and Amelia Werfel Koberstein. He came to the USA by ship in 1880 along 
2 CONC with his parents and three other children. They were six weeks on the 
2 CONC water. There were also cattle and a lot of other immigrants on the same 
2 CONC ship. They landed at Ellis Island, NY where they were processed. They 
2 CONC then went to Iowa for a year where his father got a job helping an outfit 
2 CONC thrash watermelons. They
2 CONT could eat all the watermelons they wanted as long as they gave all the 
2 CONC seeds back. From there they went to Hastings, NE where his father worked 
2 CONC in a brick yard making bricks. They moved to a farm a few years later. 
2 CONC Frank started farming on his own, where he batched for a few years until 
2 CONC he met and married the school teacher.
2 CONT     Frank and Clara E. Foy were married March 10, 1909. They continued to 
2 CONC live on this place and farm until buying the place 4 north and 4 miles 
2 CONC west of Holyoke in 1916 and moving there in the spring of 1918. They 
2 CONC loaded their belongings in two box cars and immigrated to Holyoke. Dan 
2 CONC McGowan immigrated on the same train. The McGowans lived 4 north and 2 
2 CONC 1/2 miles west of Holyoke. Frank came with the stock and other things. He 
2 CONC also brought his dog. Clara and the four children stayed with relatives 
2 CONC and came later on the passenger train to Holyoke where Frank met them 
2 CONC with a team and carriage.
2 CONT     At that time they could go one-half mile east from the place and 
2 CONC angle across country to Holyoke, There were few fences. Most was open 
2 CONC range. Some of their close neighbors were Morris Brees, Munce Hitt, Gust 
2 CONC Richardson, and Agnes Arnes families. They were never too busy to stop 
2 CONC what they were doing and go help someone sick or in need of help.
2 CONT     Frank and Clara had eight children, the first one died in infancy. 
2 CONC The rest of the children, Floyd, Winona, Roy, Faye, L. Frank, Ray, and 
2 CONC Emily attended Silver Beam School 2 1/2 miles south of where they lived. 
2 CONC At one time there were 37 pupils attending with one teacher. They usually 
2 CONC had two or three programs a year, especially one at Christmas time. They 
2 CONC also attended high school in Holyoke. There were a lot of good times 
2 CONC along with the bad.
2 CONT     Frank and Clara bought a home in Holyoke at 627 S. Phelan and moved 
2 CONC into it in the fall of 1945, where they continued to make their home. 
2 CONC Frank liked to work in the garden and Clara with her flowers and also her 
2 CONC clubs. Clara passed away April 30, 1959, and Frank continued to live at 
2 CONC this address until he passed away on April 25, 1966. Both of them were

2 CONT      Frank W. Koberstein, 88, well known resident of the Holyoke 
2 CONC community for 47 years, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 25, at his 
2 CONC home here. He had been active until a short time before his death.
2 CONT      Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, April 28, at the 
2 CONC Holyoke Methodist church, with Rev. Gerald Dingman officiating, and 
2 CONC interment will be at Holyoke Memorial Park. Arrangements are in charge of 
2 CONC the Lewis Funeral Home.
2 CONT      The third eldest child in a family of 10 children of Amelia Werfel 
2 CONC and Henry Koberstein, Frank William Koberstein was born July 5, 1877, 
2 CONC near Berlin, Germany. In 1881 he emigrated with his parents to America. 
2 CONC They first lived in Illinois but soon settled near Hastings, Nebraska 
2 CONC where Mr. Koberstein attended school and grew to manhood.
2 CONT      It was there that he met his wife, Clara Foy, who was teaching 
2 CONC school near his farm. They were united in marriage at Edgar, Nebraska, on 
2 CONC March 10, 1909, at the home of the bride's parents. They continued to 
2 CONC make their home four miles north of Hastings until March 1919, when they 
2 CONC moved to Colorado by immigrant cars and established their home on the 
2 CONC farm eight miles northwest of Holyoke which they had purchased two years 
2 CONC earlier. Here they farmed and made their home until 1945 when their sons 
2 CONC returned from military service to resume the farming. At that time Mr. 
2 CONC and Mrs. Koberstein purchased a residence in Holyoke, at 627 South Phelan 
2 CONC Avenue, and this continued to be their home since that time.
2 CONT      Mr. Koberstein was baptized into the Lutheran faith as a child and 
2 CONC was a charter member of Grace Lutheran church in Holyoke while it was in 
2 CONC existence. In 1949, Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein placed their membership in 
2 CONC the First Methodist church and remained faithful members until their 
2 CONC death. Mr. Koberstein attended church the day before he passed away.
2 CONT      He enjoyed gardening as a hobby. He spaded the soil Saturday and 
2 CONC planned to make his first planting of sweet corn this week.
2 CONT      Mrs. Koberstein passed away April 30, 1959, six weeks after she and 
2 CONC Mr. Koberstein had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
2 CONT      Seven of their eight children are living, their first son having 
2 CONC died at birth. Twelve grandsons, one granddaughter, three 
2 CONC daughters-in-law, four sons-in-law, and two of Mr. Koberstein's sisters, 
2 CONC Mrs. Ida Garfield, Manhattan, Kansas, and Mrs. Millie Tjaden, Hastings, 
2 CONC Nebraska, also survive.
2 CONT      The children and their husbands or wives are all here to attend the 
2 CONC funeral. The children are: Floyd Koberstein, Pomeroy, Washington, Winona, 
2 CONC Mrs. Glen Rouze, Holyoke; Roy A. Koberstein, Holyoke; Faye, Mrs. W.A. 
2 CONC Dulgar, Sacramento, California; Lee Frank Koberstein, Pullman,

2 CONT Mrs. Frank W. Koberstein of Holyoke, 75, who had made her home in this 
2 CONC community for 40 years, passed away last Thursday night at the Phillips 
2 CONC County Hospital. Her health had not been good for some time and she 
2 CONC suffered a stroke a few days before her death.
2 CONT Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Holyoke Methodist 
2 CONC church, with Rev. Hubert Wubben, pastor of the church, officiating. 
2 CONC Interment as at Holyoke Memorial Park. Arrangements were in charge of the 
2 CONC Lewis Funeral Home.
2 CONT As Clara Foy, a daughter of William and Martha Foy, Mrs. Koberstein was 
2 CONC born February 17, 1884 at Pattonsburg, Missouri. While she as still a 
2 CONC child, her family moved to Fairfield, Nebraska where she received her 
2 CONC education in the public schools. She joined the Christian church in her 
2 CONC childhood.
2 CONT After reaching school in the area around Fairfield for several years, she 
2 CONC was united in marriage to Frank W. Koberstein on March 10, 1909. To this 
2 CONC union eight children were born the oldest of whom died in infancy.
2 CONT In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein purchased a farm northwest of Holyoke and 
2 CONC moved to it in 1919. There they resided until 1945 when they retired and 
2 CONC moved to their home in Holyoke. Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein celebrated their 
2 CONC 50th wedding anniversary on March 10, 1959. This event was attended by 
2 CONC all their children and grandchildren.
2 CONT Mr. and Mrs. Koberstein united with the local Methodist church in 1949. 
2 CONC Mrs. Koberstein was a member of the Larkin and Beachville clubs, 
2 CONC Community club. Golden Age club and Women’s Society of Christian Service 
2 CONC of the Methodist church. Mrs. Koberstein was always at the service of her 
2 CONC neighbors and was often called to minister to the sick. The Koberstein 
2 CONC home was one of genuine friendliness and hospitality.
2 CONT Surviving Mrs. Koberstein and her husband; four sons, Floyd, Pomeroy, 
2 CONC Washington, Frank, Pullman Washington, and Roy and Ray, both of Holyoke; 
2 CONC three daughters, Winona (Mrs. Glenn) Rouze, and Emily (Mrs. Delbert) 
2 CONC Haynes, both of Holyoke and Fay (Mrs. W.A.) Dulgar, Sacramento, 
2 CONC California; one sister, Mrs. Emily Forberg, Clay Center, Nebraska, two 
2 CONC brothers, Leston and Ray Foy, Los Angeles, California; 10 grandsons; one 
2 CONC granddaughter, and many other relatives and friends.

2 CONT Fern Falk, 88, died on October 30, 2002 in Sun City, Arizona. She was 
2 CONC born in 1914, the daughter of Arthur and Esther (Holm) Falk, in 
2 CONC Fairfield. She attended school there until moving into Posegate Hall in 
2 CONC Holyoke. She then attended Phillips County High School and graduated as 
2 CONC Valedictorian in 1931. She continued her education at Colorado State 
2 CONC Teachers College, Greeley. Fern taught at Holyoke and Alamosa before 
2 CONC moving to Hammond, Indiana in 1941. She taught at Harding and Clark 
2 CONC schools, then became Principal of Jefferson Elementary School in 1855 
2 CONC when the school opened.
2 CONT 
2 CONT She retired in 1976 and moved to Sun City, Arizona. She was a member of 
2 CONC the teaching honor society, Delta Kappa Tau.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Survivors include two nephews, Dr. John and wife Sharyn Orcutt, San 
2 CONC Diego, California and Dr. James and wife Barbara Orcutt, Seattle, 
2 CONC Washington; brother-in-law John P. Orcutt, Delta; step-brothers Willard

2 CONC and husband Dale O'Neal, Holyoke. Cousins, Wayne and wife Patricia Falk,

2 CONC marrying William Arthur Dulgar in Denver.
2 CONT Faye was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur, her only 
2 CONC child, James William and her brother Ray W. "Swede" Koberstein.

2 CONT Ray W. (Swede) Koberstein, 80, died at North Colorado Medical Center in 
2 CONC Greeley on Sunday, March 17, 2002 after a short illness.
2 CONT Swede was born to Frank W. and Clara E. Foy Koberstein on January 30, 
2 CONC 1922. He attended school through eighth grade at Silverbeam School west 
2 CONC of Holyoke. He completed his high school education at Holyoke High 
2 CONC School, receiving various awards, including the FFA State Farmer Degree.
2 CONT While in high school he was active in sports. He was a guard on Holyoke’s 
2 CONC first state championship football team and participated in track. Upon 
2 CONC graduation from high school he was offered a football scholarship to 
2 CONC Kansas State, but World War II prevented him from attending, as he was 
2 CONC needed at home to help with the family farm.
2 CONT He was united in marriage to Berdine North on May 27, 1950 in Holyoke and 
2 CONC to this union four boys were born. After their marriage Swede and Berdine 
2 CONC resided on the family farm northwest of Holyoke which he had purchased in 
2 CONC 1949. The farm was four miles from where he was born. There they raised 
2 CONC their four boys and became active in the community.
2 CONT Swede was a member of the United Methodist Church, served as a leader of 
2 CONC the Better Beef Makers 4-H club, a member of the Re-1J school board, was 
2 CONC an Honorary Chapter Farmer of FFA and served as a member of the Phillips 
2 CONC County ASCS committee.
2 CONT He loved to play baseball and softball and he was a very good trap 
2 CONC shooter. He enjoyed going to sales and visiting with people. He always 
2 CONC took one of the boys with him.
2 CONT Swede was a dedicated father and grandfather. He would do anything for 
2 CONC his family with pride. He was never one to complain.
2 CONT He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Clara Koberstein.
2 CONT Swede is survived by his wife Berdine Koberstein of Holyoke; sons Barry 
2 CONC and his wife Carol of Bakersfield, California, Ron and his wife Claudia 
2 CONC of Holyoke, Dan and his wife Julie of Holyoke and Roger of Holyoke; six 
2 CONC grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; brothers Floyd and his wife Mary

2 CONT      Gaylord Lee McConnell was born July 15, 1897 in Shelby County, Iowa 
2 CONC near Irwin to James Arthur and Martha Flaugh McConnell. He died Monday, 
2 CONC June 19, 1992 at Sterling Regional MedCenter in Sterling at the age of 
2 CONC 94.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Gaylord was the oldest of five children. After the death of his 
2 CONC father in 1907, his mother and five children moved to Sterling. In the 
2 CONC fall of 1909, Gaylord attended Lincoln School as a sixth grader. His 
2 CONC mother married Roy Shannon in 1910. They moved to a homestead south of 
2 CONC Haxtun and Gaylord attended Bryant School.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He moved to Haxtun in 1912 and worked for Harry Perry on his horse 
2 CONC ranch one mile east of Haxtun.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      In 1918 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and did his basic training 
2 CONC in California. He was ready to go overseas when the war ended in November 
2 CONC of 1918. He returned to Haxtun and on March 16, 1921 he married Elva 
2 CONC Crichlow at her family home northeast of Haxtun.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      They lived on a farm five and one-half miles northeast of Haxtun. In 
2 CONC March of 1971 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Elva passed 
2 CONC away on June 26, 1973 and Gaylord moved to Haxtun in 1974. He was able to 
2 CONC live by himself until he fell and broke his hip on June 11.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Gaylord had been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1915 
2 CONC and a member of the American Legion for 65 years. He was a past member of 
2 CONC the Farmers Union.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Gaylord took great pride in his family. His leisure time was spent 
2 CONC reading the newspaper, watching baseball and game shows on television.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He was preceded in death by his wife Elva; parents; brothers Frank, 
2 CONC Guy and Wayne; half brother Johnny Shannon; and a great grandson.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Survivors include sons Everette McConnell and wife Betty and Harold 
2 CONC McConnell and wife Dorothy of Haxtun; daughter Pauline Koberstein and 
2 CONC husband Roy of Holyoke; sister Edna Coop and husband Harold of Greeley; 
2 CONC half sisters Gladys Harlow of Otis and Hazel Bullard of Greeley; eight 
2 CONC grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

2 CONT      Funeral services were held Friday, July 3, 1992 at the United 
2 CONC Methodist Church in Haxtun with Rev. Jeanne Redshaw officiating. Burial 
2 CONC followed in Haxtun Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heart 
2 CONC Association, Haxtun United Methodist Church or the charity of your 
2 CONC choice.

2 CONC Memorial Hospital.  Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's 
2 CONC Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. John Keefe will officiate. Burial 
2 CONC will be in the Aurora Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m.

2 CONT Mr. Koberstein was born March 13, 1929, to Otto A. and Pearl A. (Joyce) 
2 CONC Koberstein in a private home in Lewellen.  He attended country school 
2 CONC through the second grade. After completing grammar school at Scarritt 
2 CONC School in Kansas City, Mo., he graduated from Manual High School.
2 CONT 
2 CONT His first part-time employment was in the manufacture of women's hats in 
2 CONC a "sweat shop," where steam was used to shape the felt into hats. In 
2 CONC 1948, he joined the Kansas City Fire Department at the age of 19. He 
2 CONC joined the Army in 1951. He completed training at Counter Intelligence 
2 CONC Corps in Ft. Halibird, Md. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean 
2 CONC War and was discharged in 1953, at San Francisco.  In 1952, he raised 
2 CONC turkeys with his dad on the South Tableland near Lewellen in the summer.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He married Delores Bartholomew on Dec. 31, 1954, at Kansas City, Mo. He 
2 CONC graduated from Finlay Engineering College in Kansas City in 1956 with a 
2 CONC bachelor of science in mechanical engineering degree.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was involved with the space program at Patrick Air Force Base in 
2 CONC Florida when the Russians launched their Sputnik satellite and was also 
2 CONC at Patrick Air Force Base when the first U.S. satellite blew up on the 
2 CONC pad.
2 CONT 
2 CONT After receiving his bachelor of science in electrical engineering in 
2 CONC 1960, he went to work as a field manager for the Bendix Corp. on the East 
2 CONC Coast.  He transferred to the Bendix Launch Division as a senior engineer 
2 CONC and quality control manager. He was there from the start of the Apollo 
2 CONC Moon Program in 1965 until its successful completion in 1973.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He moved to Aurora and acquired an Interstate Battery franchise.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Paula (Mrs. LaMoyne) Danhauer 
2 CONC of Aurora; one grandson; and one sister, Mary (Mrs. Harold) Gibson of 
2 CONC Aurora.

2 CONC Koberstein, was born in a private home in Lewellen, Nebraska on March 13,

2 CONC died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
2 CONT Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in 
2 CONC Hastings with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in 
2 CONC ParkviewCemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 
2 CONC Friday atBrand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.  Mr. Bierman was born 
2 CONC Oct. 16, 1908, to Albert and Emma (Koberstein) Bierman at Hastings. He 
2 CONC graduated from Hastings High School in 1926. In1936 he married Ruth E. 
2 CONC Baker. They farmed four miles northeast of Hastings. In 1974 they moved 
2 CONC into town, and he retired from farming in1975. In 1982 his wife died.  He 
2 CONC was a member of New York Avenue Congregational Church.  Survivors are two 
2 CONC daughters, Marilyn M. Bierman and Cheryl Sue Yates, both of Hastings; one 
2 CONC son, Wayne A. of Beatrice; two sisters, Isola Eaglin of Hastings and 
2 CONC Irene Garrett of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and four 
2 CONC great-grandchildren.  He also was preceded in death by two brothers.  
2 CONC Memorials may be given to the Kidney Foundation or Grace United Methodist 
2 CONC Church.

2 CONT T. LORRAINE KOBERSTEIN, 73, of Thornton died April 7. Memorial services 
2 CONC will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 11, at Aspen Magnolia Chapel. Mrs. 
2 CONC Koberstein was born in Morgantown, W.Va., on March 18, 1923. She married 
2 CONC Ernest Koberstein, 1946. She was a secretary for Sterns-Rogers 
2 CONC Construction and Engineering, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Order 
2 CONC of Eastern Star and United Methodist Church in Oshkosh, Neb. Survivors 
2 CONC include daughters Sandra Schwartz of Montana, Peggy Arndt of California, 
2 CONC Patty Smith of Frederick; sister Eileen Christensen of Littleton; seven 
2 CONC grandchildren; a great-grandchild.

2 CONT Mr. Koberstein was born March 13, 1929, to Otto A. and Pearl A. (Joyce)
2 CONT Koberstein in a private home in Lewellen.  He attended country school
2 CONT through the second grade. After completing grammar school at Scarritt 
2 CONC School
2 CONT in Kansas City, Mo., he graduated from Manual High School.
2 CONT 
2 CONT His first part-time employment was in the manufacture of women's hats in 
2 CONC a
2 CONT "sweat shop," where steam was used to shape the felt into hats. In 1948, 
2 CONC he
2 CONT joined the Kansas City Fire Department at the age of 19. He joined the 
2 CONC Army
2 CONT in 1951. He completed training at Counter Intelligence Corps in Ft.
2 CONT Halibird, Md. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War and was
2 CONT discharged in 1953, at San Francisco.  In 1952, he raised turkeys with 
2 CONC his
2 CONT dad on the South Tableland near Lewellen in the summer.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He married Delores Bartholomew on Dec. 31, 1954, at Kansas City, Mo. He
2 CONT graduated from Finlay Engineering College in Kansas City in 1956 with a
2 CONT bachelor of science in mechanical engineering degree.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was involved with the space program at Patrick Air Force Base in 
2 CONC Florida
2 CONT when the Russians launched their Sputnik satellite and was also at 
2 CONC Patrick
2 CONT Air Force Base when the first U.S. satellite blew up on the pad.
2 CONT 
2 CONT After receiving his bachelor of science in electrical engineering in 
2 CONC 1960,
2 CONT he went to work as a field manager for the Bendix Corp. on the East 
2 CONC Coast.
2 CONT He transferred to the Bendix Launch Division as a senior engineer and
2 CONT quality control manager. He was there from the start of the Apollo Moon
2 CONT Program in 1965 until its successful completion in 1973.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He moved to Aurora and acquired an Interstate Battery franchise.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Paula (Mrs. LaMoyne) Danhauer 
2 CONC of
2 CONT Aurora; one grandson; and one sister, Mary (Mrs. Harold) Gibson of 
2 CONC Aurora.

2 CONT He was preceded in death by one brother, James.
