2 CONT that the name Kobersteen was actually Koberstein. The "i" was dropped in

2 CONT One of the oldest sites to appear on maps of the western Great Lakes
2 CONT region is the "Dalles" of the Wisconsin River. It was identified as a
2 CONT convenient reference point by French explorers in the 1700's. The name
2 CONT stuck after the French explorers left Wisconsin, with the spelling and
2 CONT pronunciation Anglicized as the "dells". When the railroad arrived in
2 CONT 1857, the new village established at the point where the tracks crossed
2 CONT the Wisconsin River, was named Kilbourn City in honor of the railroad's
2 CONT president - but locals and visitors alike never stopped referring to the
2 CONT area as the "Dells". In 1931, the city of Kilbourn officially changed its
2 CONT name to Wisconsin Dells.
