JOHN BATES

John Bates grew up in an orphanage. He remembered that he had a brother and a sister, but he never did know where they were.

He married Lola Stockwell at Stillwater early in the 1890's. They moved to Kansas in 1896, then to a place north of Gage, and in 1908 they moved north of Shattuck, where he bought some school land.

When they moved to the Shattuck area they had six children, Cuba (Rieckie), Ruba (Wright), Lyra (O'Hair), Alva (Bradshaw), Rosa (Peetoom), and Deward. George and Arlo were born after their move to Shattuck.

John always wanted to go to Missouri, so in 1925, he, his wife, and son Arlo moved to Missouri. They lived until their death. John passed away in January, 1945, and Lola passed on in April, 1957.
