| Misc. Notes |
| Came by covered wagon to Texas in 1836. Received original Texas Land grant. [Wrong -- bought his land from John P. Coles who was the original grantee, one of Austin's "300" original colonists] descended from some of the earliest settlers of Virginia [not necessarily -- probably didn't get to VA/NC until around 1750s, unless the Osbornes were early VA settlers], who came from Essex England [also unproven, but probably correct. The letter from S.A. Hackworth says they came from Essex, but could have meant Essex Co., NJ instead of or as well as Essex, England.] A surveyor by trade who lived for 82 years, Riggs and his wife Joanna had twelve children and are both buried in the Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. [Not!] Riggs and Joanna were cousins and were married in Kentucky in 1810 or 1815 where they remained until 1819. [Nope] They moved at that time to Crawford Co, Indiana, where their son, Elijah, was born; and later to Illinois; residing in Franklin, Schuyler, and McDough (sic) counties. [Also Knox Co., IL] They first settled in Washington on the Brazos in 1836, one week after the battle of San Jacinto. [probably not until 1837, when they bought the land near Independence from John P. Coles in January of that year. ] They reared their family in Washington County and lived out their lives there. Some of the family appparently preceded them to Texas. A brother Sidney O. Pennington [not a brother; Sidney was the illegitimate son of a different branch of the Penningtons of KY] was one of the 58 signers of the Texas Declaration. Document shows he was a native of Kentucky, but was likely born in Virginia. [unclear whether this refers to Riggs or Sidney.] After deaths of Riggs & Joanna, lawsuit for partition of lands was brounght in 1877 in Washington Co., TX by their heirs.15 [annotations by KWC16 ] |
