My Dear Cousin: --
Your welcome letter of 28th ultimo, came to hand in due time. I wrote you about a year ago, and was very much disappointed because you failed to make any reply. Love for my kindred runs very deeply into my being, and it never matters with me, what other my think about any of my relatives, it does not change my love for them. I love the name of Pennington, probably more than the name of Hackworth, because I think my Mother, was one of the best mothers that ever lived, and her father and mother, always seemed far better to me than any other people of the world. All I can remember about the early history of the Penningtons and Osborns, is what Grandfather - Riggs, Penington told me, viz. The first Penningtons and Osbornes that came to this country, came from Essex . England. The two familes emmigrated together from England, about 1760, and settled in North Carolina; but one branch of the Penington family, afterwards moved to New Jersey, where our grandfather was born and resided until about 18 years of age, when he went on a visit to his relatives in North Carolina. There he first met our Grandmother, whose Maiden name was Joana. Osborn. She was grandfathers second cousin. The were young people when they married, but grandfather was three years her senior.
She was a devoted member of the Baptist church, and never for a moment doubted the inspiration of both the old and New Testaments.
But Grandfather, as well as your own father, never believed in the inspiration of the Bible. But after a few years, Grandmother prevailed upon Grandfather to join the Baptist church.
Finally he and gradmother, began reading the old bible, and the story of the creation of the world, of the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, seemed so ridiculous to Grandfather, he called it all a fairy tale. But as they read on, the history of the jews under Moses marching from Egypt to Canan, and massacreing men, women and children, outraged him, and he said Hana, my name must go off of the church book. I will not worship any god, that loves part of his eartly, and helps them murder and rob is other children. Its a lie and I wont swallow such lies. Grandmother, told their pastor (parson Hosea. Garrett ) of his intention, who begged him attend church next Sunday, and hear him explain parts of the scripture, that Grandfather believed to be false. He attended the church and heard the parson explain why God repented, and would not destroy Nineveh. after He had sent Jonah there to tell its people they would be destroyed in forty days. The parson explained that the main reason was, that the people of Nineveh, repented of their sins, but said there was another reason, why God repented, viz, he said he had recently learned from history, that Nineveh, was one of the weathiest stock countries of the world, having vast flocks of sheep and herds of cattle and horses, and if the country had been destrouyed by, it would have killed all of the vast herds of sheep, cattle and horses, therefore God repented too because he knew the dumb cattle, were in no wise responsible for the sins commited by the people of Nineveh. At this part of the sermon, grandfather, became very angry, and jumping from his seat he siad, "that will do parson, take my name off the church book, for I will not worship a god, that loves sheep, cattle and horses, more than he loves his earthly children."
He would never again enter into any church, and while he never censured any of his children, who became members of churches, but would only smile and say, "they do not look into the depth of reason as I hoped they would do."
But how devoted was our Grandmother to the church, and bible. She named your fathers christian name Elijah, and also gave our uncles Elisha, Stephen, Elihu and Asa, bible names. Here are the names of their children, Wesley, Stephen, Elijah, Elihu, Elisha, William, Hansford and Asa. Their daughters names were Matilda, Lydia, Jane and Julia. making 12 children in all. They raised all 12 of their children to be adults, and met with the greatest sorrow that can befall parents, viz. They both lived to lose by death uncles, William. Hansford. Elihu. Stephen, and their daughters Julia and Lydia.
Grandfather, was in fact, a real old fashioned patriarch, for he so loved his children and their children, he kept them all living as near as possible to him and Grandmother. It was their delight and pleasure, to have as many of their children and gradchildren, to visit and eat their Sundays dinner with them, as often as possible. If he had been well educated and trianed into any profession, he would have been a leader of men.
Now I wish to know, if your brothers Asa and Joe, are still living, and if so how are they getting along? Tell me all you can about our other realtives. I am glad you called upon Aunt Rebeka, for she is a noble woman, and made Uncle. Elisha, a loving and a devoted wife. Wonderful indeed, how she has outlived all of her brothers and only sister, all of whom, were younger than her.
It is also wonderful., when we think how long your father, uncle Elisha . Aunt Matilda and my mother lived. I think they were all in the 93rd year of their lives when they died.
It is also wonderful, how Mary and myself, have undergone so many hardships and misfortunes, and are still living in fine health, without any disease, aches or pains. On 13th of next month, I will celebrate my 86th birthday anniversary. On 6th of last month, we celebrated our 61st marriage anniversary.
According to Darwins theory, all people who live to a ripe old age, are the survival of the fittest.
I am still engaged in the real estate business, but regret to say, I hardly realize enough profits from the business, to pay my expenses. I realize, I cannot compete with over 100.000 younger people of this state, who are licenced real estate brokers, for they are up to date in the business, while I am old fashioned.
But I am spending most of my time, in writing and rewriting a manuscript of a book titled "How science is rescuing religion from error and falsehood." I have placed the manuscriets, in hands of author critics, who revise and point out mistakes I have made in my statements, and who also advise me what amendments to make, or what parts to leave out.
I have rewritten the manuscript four times, and know I have vastly improved it, each time I have rewritten it. It requires about two weeks for me to rewrite the manuscript, and I was six months preparing and writing the first manuscript. So you can realise what a task I have undertaken, but it is a task I delight to think and write about.
I am a thorough convert to the principles of evolution and reincarnation, and like our dear old Grandpa and your father, I regard the bible, as mere history, and not as a book written by inspiration from our Creator..
I am informed, you are quite wealthy, and still accumulating wealth. I am glad to hear this, for wealth helps us live and enjoy life, when used rightly. My family and myself, deeply sympathized with you, when we were informed of your wifes death, for she was a noble woman of a high order of intelligence. Cousin Robert . Hackworth, and Cousin Nissa.Burnett, always mailed us all the Brenham Banners, that had Mays poems and other writings published in it. It is self evident to me, she is now in another mortal form God, had prepared for her, and is now beginning to live another earthly life. She will have all the wisdom and good she learned in this life, to help her progress onward to higher and still higher heights of wisdom and glory. She will have no memory of ever living this life, for all of the memory of past sorrows, misfortunes and suffering she witnessed, perished with her mortal body. The infinte wisdom and love of our Creator, will not permit us, after death of our mortal bodies, enter a new life in another form, and remember all of the sorrows, misfortunes and evils we have passed through in this life, for is we could remember all events of our past lives, it would prevent us from making progress in each new life of reincarnation.
I earnestly invite you, to visit this part of California, for here our average temperature is 70 degrees throughout the year. We have no blizzards, freezes, cyclones, hurricanes, cloud bursts and other calamities that so often occur in other states.
It is worth at least $5.000.00 per annum, for any one to reside in this heath and life giving climate. Come and see the most beautiful varieties of flowers and fruits of the world. See out fine cities, towns and homes, also our mountains, farms and orchards, and it will give you pleasure and happiness. Mary and myself, are residing with our youngest daughter Daisy, and her husband, S. L. Lewis most of our time, but we also reside part of our time with our son Wm. W. H, and his wife Kate. Our family here, join me in love and best wishes to you. Joe. Asa, and all of our other dear kindred in Texas. Be sure and write me a long newsy letter at your earlist convenience.
Your cousin.
Stephen. A. Hackworth.
Ps: Excuse all mistakes I have made on this Letter.

22. 1941, copied from Marriage Book 1, page 4, Travis Phillips, County Clerk, Washington Co., TX.
Jonnie Mae Hackworth disputed this date because Stephen Austin Hackworth was born before the official marriage date of W. W. Hackworth and Eliza Jane Pennington, and because the name on the certificate was Mary Jane Pennington, not Eliza Jane. According to a letter she later wrote to Phillips, she had asked for the certified copy, and probably told him the name it "should have been" thus introducing the error herself. But this is speculation. She did ask him to "clear it up" but there is no record of a change being made in her papers. She speculated that the late marriage was because they did not want to be married by a Spanish (Catholic) priest as Mexican law required before the Texas Revolution, but the Revolution was mostly over before Pennington and Hackworth arrived in Texas. Eliza Jane Pennington reported that she married William Wilburn Hackworth on 6 Aug 1839 in her application for a Confederate widow's pension. -- KWC 7/11/1998

Dear Katherine: I just found your web site. I am a descendant of
Timothy. I am 67 years old and have not done any real geanealogical
research for about 15 years. I have recently purchased software with the
hopes of loading all of the information I have in notebooks. Hopefully,
one day one of my children or grandchildren may have an interest. My
reason for writing is to give you some additional information.
In the 1870 Washington County, Texas census, page 64, Asa
Pennington,(youngest son of Riggs) was listed with his wife C.E., (Clara
Elizabeth) and children Dudley 13, S.D. 11, M.R. 9 (Margaret Rosamond,
my grandmother), and J.R.- Margaret was not listed in the 1880 census
since she and my Grandfather, George Washington Graham were already
married. ( George is the brother of Charles, who married Mary A.(Mattie)
Pennington, daughter of Elisha Pennington.) In this same 1870 census,
Johanna Pennington, age 82 was living with Asa and Clara. In later
messages, I will give you the descendants on G.W. Graham and Margaret
Rosamond (Rosa). I will also give you a little more information on
Charles Graham's family. As you show in the chart, Elisha Pennington is
buried in Wallis, Texas, next to his second wife Rebecca Jane. I have a
picture of the tombstone. Sorry to ramble on, hope this makes sense.
Thanks for your good web site. Donald R. Graham

Found this Joshua PENNINGTON in the file:
Descendants of Joshua P. PENNINGTON - 13 Mar 1997
FIRST GENERATION
1. Joshua P. PENNINGTON was born on 23 Feb 1778 in Rowan Co., NC. He
died about 1868 in McMinnville, Warren Co., TN.. Joshus P. PENNINGTON
was a son of Richard PENNINGTON and Hannah (Boone) STEWART. When
Joshua's parents moved from NC. to KY. in 1797, he was some 19 or 20
years old and not married. So it is quite likely he went with the family
in their various movings about. Joshua must have been an industrious,
hard working farmer for in 1804 it is found he owned 100 acres of land on
Line Creek in Barren Co. Two years later he married Polly, the daughter
of William Gist, and the couple moved to TN. sometime later. In the
White Co., TN, court minutes he was listed as a juror 1811-1812. The tax
list for White CO. show he was taxed on 222 1/2 acres of land in 1816 and
again in 1826 he is mentioned as is a William Pennington who might have
been one of his sons. In the 1820 White Co. Census, Then about 42, is
listed having a wife, 2 sons b/t 10 and 16, 3 sons under 10 and 2
daughters also under 10.
On 18 June, 1854 from his home at McMinnville, TN., he wrote about his
children as follows: "We had eleven children: we raised six boys and
four girls. Our youngest daughter died. They are all married and living
as far as I know. My oldest son lives in Illinois. Two sons and one
daughter in Texas, one son in the western district of TN. One son and
one daughter in Nashville, TN., one son in Smithville, TN, one son and
one daughter living near me."
>From PP1-1, pg 2.
When Polly died on Oct., 1839, one son and three daughters were left at
home
with their father. Within three and a half years they were all married
and
Joshua was left alone. On 25 August, 1844 he and Sarah Howard were
married.
There were no children of this union.
He was married to Mary (Polly) GIST on 20 Feb 1806 in Barren Co., KY.
Mary (Polly) GIST was born on 13 Oct 1786 in Greene Co., TN. She died on
10 Oct 1839 in Monroe Co., KY. She has reference number 1777. In the
early days the boundary between KY. and TN. was not clearly defined, so
the place of death of "Polly" might have been in White or Warren Co., TN.
Joshua P. PENNINGTON and Mary (Polly) GIST had the following children:
2 i. William PENNINGTON was born about 1807.
He died in Schyuler Co., IL?.
+3 ii. Richard P. PENNINGTON.
+4 iii. Granderson PENNINGTON.
+5 iv. John PENNINGTON.
+6 v. Joseph PENNINGTON.
+7 vi. Alta Mira PENNINGTON.
+8 vii. Rhoda Ann PENNINGTON.
+9 viii. Elizabeth Jane PENNINGTON.
+10 ix. Susan Jane PENNINGTON.
+11 x. Joshua Jr. PENNINGTON.
He was also married to Sarah HOWARD on 25 Aug 1844 in White Co., TN.
Sarah HOWARD was born about 1796.
