LADD, Edward, Sr.
Kalida Newspaper - 1895
LADD, Edward, Sen. more familiary known as "Old Ned LADD" died at his
home four miles west of Kalida, on Monday January 28th, 1895. Age, 87 years, 11
months and 15 days. Mr. LADD was born in Ross County, Ohio, February 13,
1807; moved to Putnam county in 1826, and located at Fort Jennings; three
years later purchased a farm near the Auglaize River, and occupied it till
his death. Was married twice - first time to Susan TILBURY, and second
time to Mary GOODING. Was a member of the Putnam County Pioneer
Association. Was buried in what is known as the LADD graveyard, near the
family residence. It is said that Mr. LADD could allay the pain in an
aflicted member by simply laying his hands on it, or, in extreme cases, by
vigorous rubing, and there are a number of persons residing in this
vicinity who will testify that they were so relieved.

NOTE: Tom Diltz 1996 - TILBURY is mispelled (TILLBERRY). GOODING is not
correct (GOODEN, GOODWIN). 1826 as his arrival in Putnam Co. is
questionable. He is not on the 1830 census, and was married in 1828 in
Shelby Co. He probably arrived after 1830. According to the Ladd Bible,
and the death record in the courthouse, which states that Edward was 84
years old at death, he was most probably born in 1810 and not in 1807 as
the article states. Edward's birthdate of 1807 cannot be correct. The
Ladd Bible records his birth as 1810, and death records in the Putnam
County courthouse states that he was 84 at death which corresponds with the
1810 date. Death recorded Vol. 2 of Putnam Co., Ohio death record.

NOTE: by Sharon Bertsch - Only one marriage has been found, to Susannah A.
TILLBERRY
NOTE: by Donald LADD - Remember that this article is from, I suspect, a
Kalida newspaper in 1895. So I doubt if there is any one still alive that
can attest to this "miracle". The LADD cemetery has become, through
neglect and vandalism, a sorry sight (site) indeed. Only one marker could
be found several years ago. The site lies on the bank of the Auglaize
River in Jackson Township and erosion, too, has taken a toll. The Township
is supposed to register and maintain (assure upkeep) all public and private
cemeteries, by mandate of the State of Ohio. I do not know if this
cemetery had been registered as yet or not. It was not, in 1994, when I
was last in Ohio.
