The Glendora Gleaner, March 24, 1916

Long and useful life has peaceful ending

Mrs. Mary S Ladd, wife of Mr. S Ladd, passed peacefully way at the family residence on North Vista Bonita Avenue, Friday, March 17, after an illness of several weeks.

The funeral services were held at the M. E, Church at 2 o'clock p.m. the following Monday, conducted by the Rev. B Dudley Shudden of Glendale and a former pastor.

Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

There were present at the funeral a large number of friends to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed, whom they had come to know and respect in life.

The remains were followed to the last resting place in the Silent City of the dead by a large concourse of sorrowing friends to witness the last sad rites of the impressive and touching ritualistic service pronounced by the pastor.

Mary S Varnum was born in Peacham, VT, mar 29 1850. She was reared and educated in the public schools in the city of her nativity.

June 20, 1869, Miss Mary S Varnum was united in marriage to Mr. S. Ladd. Several children came to bless the home, one of whom, Mrs. Nellie A Showalter of Washington, attended her in her last illness and was at her bedside when the Spirit took it's flight to another world.

Stricken with a serious illness, it was realized from the first that the chances of recovery were against her, and that only the best possible care and medical skill that could be employed would avail. This much and more was done. And thought out the trying weeks when the body was racked with pain, she bore it all uncomplainingly and with remarkable patience and fortitude.

It was thought that for the last two weeks of her illness that she was improving, and hopes were entertained for complete recovery. Just the evening before she said she was feeling better and was cheerful. There was a change for the worse after midnight and then, the end.

During her long and useful life she was a devoted member of the church, and her fine womanly qualities and noble deeds of action well live after her, as will the higher attributes to the loving wife and the fond mother, which found its best expression in the home life and family circle.
