Veteran of Civil War Departs this Life

Seneca Ladd was born in Canaan, Vermont, April 27 1846 and died in Long Beach, California, May 13th 1917, aged 72 years, 16 days.

In early life he was married to Mary Varnum, which union was bless by the birth of three children. Fred and Lora, after attaining majority, deceased, and Nellie, now Mrs. Showalter of Glendora, surviving. Also one grandson, residing at Amber, Washington.

Mr. Ladd was a Veteran in the Union Army.

After the war he engage with the Northern Pacific as a locomotive engineer, at which occupation he was employed for twenty five years.

He early located in the state of Washington, where he resided until about six years ago, when he came to Long Beach and retired from active life. After a short residence here he removed to Glendora, where his faithful wife was called away, leaving him lonely.

After a time he was united on Nov 11, 1916, to Mrs. Emma Galloway of Long Beach, and very happily they lived the few brief months of remaining life, when he was called suddenly and quickly on Sunday morning May 13. All that could be done was rendered, but without avail. His old enemy, heart trouble, prevailed and he was not, for God took him.

Bro. Ladd was a good man, respected and beloved by all his acquaintances, a man of sterling character and worth.

He was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Addy, Washington, and later coming to Long Beach, united with Central church. Again, when returning in 1916, from Glendora, he brought his letter and united with Central church, in company with his wife. Their home was a serene and Christ-like place, Christian joy and strength prevailed to the close of the day.

The funeral service was held at the church a 10 A.M., May 10th, the pastor preaching the sermon. Music was rendered by a selection from the choir, ushers and pallbearers from the brotherhood of the church performed those services, and the Grand Army rites were performed by the Veterans Union of Long Beach.

The interment was made in the cemetery at Glendora, where the family lot is located, and the daughter resides, brief services at the grave being conducted by Dr. C O Kimballs. Mrs. C. B. Shoemaker sang a solo. The pallbearers were men from the Agenda class of the Methodist Sunday school, of which Mr. Showalter is a member. The Stars and Stripes were placed on the casket, with suitable words, by Comrade C. M. Rice of Glendora.
