Will of Joseph Ladd, 1814, Charles City County

Joseph Ladd of the county of Charles City and State of Virginia being
under bodily indisposition but of sound mind and memory…make
distribution of estate…and order last will and testament following.
Executor may sell and dispose of all my estate both real and
personal…Item I give and bequeath loving sister Chlotilda Harris 100
[pounds]…Item bequeath loving sister Ann Bates l00 [pounds]…Item
bequeath children of my deceased brother James D. Ladd, to wit Oliver
and Anna Mariah Ladd 100 [pounds] to be paid when they reach lawful
age or marry…Item bequeath Thomas S. Pleasants and Joseph S.
Pleasants, children of deceased sister Mary Pleasants 50 [pounds]
each, paid when they reach lawful age or marry.  Item bequeath loving
brother Benjamin W. Ladd 100 [pounds]…also one half of two lots in the
town of (illeg) after his payment of $1000 to estate…Item bequeath
loving sister Isabella Hunnicutt 100 [pounds]…Leave in hands of
Executor $500 to be placed at interest for support of nephew Joseph
Denson Bates…also one feather bed and furniture…bequeath to dutiful
nephew James Bates one feather bed and furniture and 50 [pounds] to
set up his trade…bequeath affectionate nephew Joseph Bates one feather
bed and furniture and 50 [pounds] in cash when at lawful age or shall
marry…also give Joseph Bates silver watch…Item stock owned jointly
with Benjamin Ladd and stock on hand and money in trade be continued
and kept on as is now under management of William Lewis so long as the
establishment shall be profitable and William Lewis shall conduct the
business to my Executor's satisfaction…sale of trust of land take
place only as Executor thinks necessary…authorize Executor to take
from estate sums totaling $1000 in vindicating the rights of black
people through the medium of meeting (illeg) differences…Item bequeath
to Billy and Jacob Minor black boys under my care 100 acres of land in
state of Ohio patented in my name on the waters of Mad Run, also sum
of $50 provided they continue to serve my brother Benjamin until they
arrive at lawful age…residue of estate be equally divided amongst
brother and sisters and children of deceased brother and sister James
D. Ladd and Mary Pleasants, that is to say Chlotilda Harris and her
children or any she may have to share one sixth part.  Ann Bates and
her children…one sixth part…Oliver Ladd and Anna Maria Ladd, children
of deceased brother James Denson (Ladd) one sixth part…Thomas S.
Pleasants and Joseph S. Pleasants children of deceased sister Mary one
sixth part…Benjamin W. Ladd and any children he may have one sixth
part…Isabella Hunnicutt and her children and any she may have…one
sixth part.  Appoint affectionate and well beloved brother Benjamin W.
Ladd Executor.  Witness and set seal first day of the Eighth month
1814.  (signed) Joseph Ladd.  Signed and acknowledged in presence of
Samuel Ladd, James Vaughan, Robert Jackson.  State of Ohio Jefferson
County.  At a Court of Common Pleas held in at Steubenville in said
County on the 18th of March 1815.  Foregoing copy of the last will and
testament of Joseph Ladd admitted to record.  Signed Thos Patten Clerk
5th day of June 1815.  Transcribed by VLHD.  Jefferson County Court of
Common Pleas, Steubenville, OH.  Will Book 1 301.
