Landon Family Research Quarterly

Volume IV, Issue 1 - January 1995 (cont.)

Dear Ms. Betty Brassington,

The Landon Family Research News letter has recently been tent me by a friend who knows my interest. I found it most Interesting. Here are some possible additions to the information therein.

1. The Coat of Arms displayed on the Heading, Page 41. "PIERRE LANDON- Cure of Villadin in Alencon recorded his arms in 1696 as AZURE, three cocks OR. two over one." He obviously descends from the part of the family that remained In France.

2. Refering to the meaning of the name Landon, "land covered with heath" and Its slight variants. It also has another meaning = * a baton for restraining hunting dogs." The note on the Landons being natural farmers Is interesting as my grandfathers and many gt. uncles were head gardeners to the Great houses back to 1755.

3. Re. your article on Thomas Landon of Herefs. and Virginia, (starting on p.47.) 1 descend directly from him. I have enclosed a Landon Pedigree. Note that Thomas Landon was born in St. Germain In France in 1648. This was the time of the Civil war and the Protecterate of Cromwell. He appeared on the Huguenot Immigration list when he applied for naturalisatlon on entering Oreil College, Oxford. He was the son of Slivanus and Anne as were all Silvanus' children. You will note that Sitvanus was married to Frances St. Leger for the last few weeks of his life. The parentage of the children Is In error on the 1912 pedigree and I also note that It is creeping the Into I.G.I. As for Thomas marrying a Marv St. Leger this I believe to be someone jumping to conclusions from the previous error pertaining to Frances St. Leger. This has crept into the I.G.I. also In 1992 version. All Thomas' children are by his wife Mary DeLaval, daughter of Thomas DeLavall, (see Burke's Landed Gentry) I've enclosed some information on Thomas De Lavall on a separate page. There is no mention of a Mary St. Leger I've also checked "Crisp's Visitations of England and Wales" which confirms that Anne was the mother of Thomas Landon 1648 and that he married Mary Delaval. No mention of a Marv St. Leger.  I've also checked "Crisp's Visitations of England and Wales" which confirms that Anne was the mother of Thomas Landon 1648 and that he married Mary Delaval.  No mention of a Mary St. Leger.

4. Elizabeth. wife of Robert Carter died in 1719. not 1710.

5. Page 53. top. Isabella Jane Landon married Rev. Charles Page Eden, a distinguished Scholar. He is in the enclosed pedigree. He was collaterally descended from William of Waynefleet, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England. A book "Lives of Twelve Good Men" by John William Burgon B.D. gives a chapter on Charles Page Eden under the heading 'The Earnest Parish Priest He also has quite a lame coverage In the National Biography.

6. Richard Landon (same page) married Mary Bucklee. This misspelling of her name appears in most pedigrees.

7. Whittington Henry Landon (same pace). I doubt that he was born at Trevor Park. It was the residence of his uncle Thomas Silvanus Landon who resided there from 1809 to 1815. (Victoria, History of the Counties of Enaland: Hertfordshire. Vol 2. p.338). Both he and Letitia Elizabeth Landon resided there during their uncles tenancy. John Landon. their father did have a farm at Totteridge which is in the area. It has been said that Letitia was born there though Leman Blanchard gives her birthplace as Hans Place, Chelsea. I do note that Letitia was baptised 1805 though born 1802.

*. The enclosed prints are of Letitia. I have also enclosed a copy of Chateau Landon. Its a copy of a Postcard which is sold In that area, therefore Its probably copywrite. There's a Chateau Landon wine also; very expensive. Further interest, there are two Landon Apples

Lastly, I have a letter written by you some years ago . Someone sent it me- ?

Fondest Regards
