With this issue, we begin the first of several articles by Barbara Roach. It is always a
red-letter day when subscribers turn into authors of articles for our newsletter and we
are pleased to have these articles ready to place in future issues.
Barbara writes about her correspondence with Mike Landon: "I put all of Mike
Landon's lineage on my FTM program and will add his notes later. His line of descent is:
1. William and Mercy Landon of NJ, 2. Thomas and Nancy Landon, 3. Col. Daniel, 4. Hulbert,
5. Benjamin D., 6. Fred W., 7. Joseph, 8. Mike Landon.
"That article on Robert E. Lee (see LFR Oct 94) was requested by Alf Landon from
his great-uncle Charles because Alf wanted it in writing. So it survived. Alf Landon sent
it to Mike when he was Governor of Kansas. Mike sent it to me.
"Right now, it is my sincere belief that Tobias and John of the 1640 NH deed are
related. Also, I think there are two Johns and that has made confusion with our "six
brothers" as they are from two different Johns. The other being John Landon of
Farmington, CT who had several sons and was said to be son of George Landon.
"My source for Tobias being descended from Toby of Shevioc, Cornwall, England,
came from Stephen Chapman of Maine. Stephen is descended from just about everyone in New
England, and although he is very old and in a nursing home he is a wonderful source. He
has an encyclopedic memory.
"Later Stephen Chapman sent me his sources. In the article I took a stab at
resorting the six immigrant brothers. Stephen also found a Henry Landon on a ship's list.
. . I am going to stand by this even if someone tries to 'hand me over to the Indians' as
Grandmother used to say. I had always suspected that a Langdon could not be a Landon.
Tobias never signed anything, so we will never know how his name was really spelled. But I
think he was a Langdon sometimes and other times a Landen/Landon.
"I had fun anyhow! Stephen likes mail -- loves it, in fact."
