 This
is a picture of my great-grandparents, John Suter Black, Sr. and Elizabeth
Rankin, about the time of their marriage in 1892.
John Suter Black, Jr. and James Rankin Black, circa 1915. Both had recently
enlisted in the Coast Artillery Corps, 7th Co. and are shown in uniform
here.

And here are a few faces
from my "Most Wanted" list....
Left
to right are Isabella, Beatrice, and Margaret Rankin, probably around 1914.
These three girls are the daughters of William and Mary Core Rankin. I
now suspect that William, Mary, and four-month-old Margaret emigrated from
Scotland in 1893 via Ellis Island. Once in the US, the family moved
around a bit. It appears they may have briefly resided in New
York City, however, Isabella was born in 1895 in New Jersey. Beatrice
was born in 1907 in Canada. The family eventually settled in the
San Diego, California area.
I suspect that Isabella was married twice: first
to a Whitehead and second to a Bechtel. It appears that she had two daughters.
Beatrice's married name was MacCabe. I've found no evidence that
Margaret married. I'm very interested in learning more about this branch
of the family! See below for more pictures of William and his family.
Edward
Rankin and wife Annie Davidson with sons, John Davidson and James. Edward
was the only child of Isabella and James Rankin to stay in Scotland. I
know very little about his family and would love to hear from someone who
does...
I'm
guessing this is a son and daughter-in-law (perhaps John and Helen/Nell)
of James and Henrietta Adair. The family apparently emigrated to North
America in the early 1900's. They may have settled in the Winnipeg or Edmonton
area. Again, I would love to learn more about this line of the family.
Left
to right, according to notes on the back of the photo, are "John McIlveen's
wife", Henrietta Connally Adair, and Nell. "Bella's children" are
in the foreground. I'm guessing that the Bella referred to is perhaps
Henrietta's daughter or granddaughter.
Mystery
solved! I recently connected with a 4th cousin, Liz Townsley, who
identified the ladies in this photo. Seated is Elizabeth Donnelly,
nee Connally holding her great-granddaughter Margaret Barr. In the
back are, left to right, Jeannie Barr, nee Robertson, and Margaret Robertson,
nee Donnelly, Elizabeth's granddaughter and daughter respectively. Liz
is a g-great granddaughter of Elizabeth.
The
only note on this photo is "Winnipeg - on right 101 years". I believe
it is Henrietta and her daughter-in-law Nell. The boy might be the
same child seen above and identified as one of Bella's children.
Assuming it is Henrietta at 101, the photo would have been taken circa
1940 although the dresses seem a bit dated for 1940. Then again,
at 101, I guess you wear what you like!
This
is Margaret/Maggie Connolly Sloan/Slone in Scotland. On the back
of the photo is the note that she also lived to be 101, which would mean
she died circa 1935. I know that Maggie married James Sloan, probably
in Rutherglen in 1868. It appears that Maggie and James had several
children, including Hannah, Samuel, and Thomas. I have yet to make
a connection with any of her descendants.
According
to a note on the back, this photo is of James Sloan, husband of Margaret
Connally Sloan. The picture was taken in Glasgow.
This
is a photo of Willliam Rankin's family. A note on the back indicates
that it was taken in Winnipeg (see below photo as well) and pre-dates the
photo at the top of his three daughters. I believe that William's sons
were Robert, born 1898, Thomas, born 1902, and Edward, born 1905.
I also suspect that Mary Core Rankin was the daughter of Robert Core and
Margaret Gunn.
This
photo appears to have been taken at the same time, as the group portrait
above. However, the note on the back states it was taken in Toronto
rather than Winnipeg...so it's a bit of a mystery where these two photos
were actually taken!
This
photo shows my ggreat-grandmother, Isabella Connally Rankin with "Beth
and Thomas Rankin of California." I believe that Tom is the eldest
son of William and Mary Core Rankin. I suspect that Beth is his wife.
This
postcard, dated August 1, 1912, shows William and Mary Rankin with
their youngest son Edward on their way back to Winnipeg after visiting
family in Maine.
Here
is Robert Rankin (whom I believe to be the middle son of William and Mary
Core Rankin) with my great-grandparents John and Elizabeth Rankin Black
and their daughter Cathy.

Please
do send me an E-mail if you're researching any of these family lines or
surnames.
