I have traced the Rankins  to Inch, Wigtownshire based on the 1825 OPR marriage entry for Samuel and Mary McEwan.  I have yet to discover either Mary or Samuel's birthdate and parentage.

The family surname  is found most commonly under Rankin, however, I have also seen it spelled as Renkine and Rankine.  McEwan is also recorded as McEwen and McQueen.

1. Samuel¹ Rankin married Mary McEwan on MAR 8, 1825 at Inch, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He died before OCT 1, 1870.

Mary McEwan died before OCT 1, 1870.

Known children of Samuel¹ Rankin and Mary McEwan were as follows: 

• i. Esther² RANKIN was born on NOV 10, 1825.
• 2 ii. James RANKIN, born circa 1827 at Inch, Wigtownshire, Scotland; married Isabella Connally.
• iii. Elisabeth RANKIN was born on AUG 16, 1828.

2. James² Rankin (Samuel¹) was born circa 1827 at Inch, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He married Isabella Connally, daughter of Thomas Connally and Rosanna Mills, on DEC 28, 1855 at Damellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died on OCT 1, 1870 at Craigbank, New Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Isabella Connally was born on JAN 2, 1832 at County Down, Ireland or Ayr, Scotland. She died in 1924 at Saco, York County, Maine.

Known children of James² Rankin and Isabella Connally were as follows: 

• 3 i. Thomas³ RANKIN, Sr., born AUG 14, 1856 at 116 Craigmark, Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland.
• 4 ii. Edward RANKIN, born AUG 12, 1858 at 179 Craigmark, Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland; married Annie Davidson.
• iii. Mary RANKIN was born on SEP 5, 1860 at Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. She died in 1866 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
• 5 iv. James RANKIN, born DEC 18, 1862 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland; married Agnes Paterson.
• v. Samuel RANKIN was born on APR 7, 1865 at Rutherglen, County of Lanarke, Scotland. He died in 1891 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
• 6 vi. William RANKIN, born NOV 23, 1867 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

4. Edward³ Rankin (James², Samuel¹) was born on AUG 12, 1858 at 179 Craigmark, Dalmellington, Ayrshire, Scotland. He married Annie Davidson, daughter of John Davidson and Mary Davidson, on DEC 31, 1885 at 68 Burnhill Street, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Annie Davidson was born on JUL 15, 1860 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Known children of Edward³ Rankin and Annie Davidson were as follows:

She married John Suter Black, Sr., son of Mark Bennie Black and Jane Smith, on JUN 24, 1892 at Albert Hall, Bridgeton, Glasgow Road, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire Scotland. She died in 1946 at Saco, York County, Maine, at home of son John, 24 King Street.

John Suter Black, Sr was born on FEB 24, 1870 at Woolwich, England. He died on NOV 20, 1940 at Saco, York County, Maine, at home 18 Bartlett Street, at age 70.

Known children of Elizabeth³ Rankin and John Suter Black, Sr. were as follows: 

• i. Mark Bennie⁴ BLACK was born on MAY 8, 1893. He married Alice E. Sweetsir, daughter of William Sweetsir and Jane Unknown, on JUN 2, 1919. He died on JUN 4, 1968 at age 75.
• ii. James Rankin BLACK was born on JUL 7, 1895 at Rutherglen, Scotland? He married Gladys Irene Norwood, daughter of Unknown Norwood and Isabelle J. Unknown, on JUN 2, 1934 at Saco, York County, Maine. He died on SEP 25, 1950 at Saco, Maine, at age 55.
• iii. John Suter BLACK, Jr was born on AUG 5, 1897 at Rutherglen, Scotland. He married Hannah Esther Milliken, daughter of Henry Alonzo Grizwold Milliken and Fanny Ellen Jameson, on OCT 2, 1926 at Old Orchard, Maine. He died on APR 23, 1955 at Saco, Maine.
• iv. Isabella Connally BLACK was born on JAN 12, 1900 at Scotland. She married Norman Keith McCauley on AUG 22, 1921 at Saco, York County, Maine. She died on FEB 16, 1931 at Biddeford, Maine.
• vi. Samuel BLACK was born on SEP 18, 1902. He died on SEP 19, 1902.

v. Catherine Scott Davis BLACK was born on FEB 21, 1907. She married Harry S. Nielson, son of Hans J. Nielson and Mary Carlson, on JUL 16, 1931. She died on AUG 12, 1990.
