CHENEY, c.1829-1937 Related Families:  Farley | Fraser

Migration: New York>Mallorytown, ONT>Jefferson Co., NY

        (1)  Unknown Cheney, probably born around 1790 to 1810, possibly in New York, and a wife, are the as yet undiscovered parents of the proposed brothers named:

  1. Alonzo Cheney, birth year and place unknown, died about 1859 when son Alonzo Jr. was a year old; married Ann Farley, born about 1824 in either Ireland or Canada, died 14 Jun 1885, age 61, buried in Orleans Corners Cemetery, Orleans, Jefferson Co., New York.  Ann was the sister of Rosetta Farley, who married George Cheney, mentioned below.  Alonzo died about 1859 and Ann took her family to Mallorytown, Town of Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada, where they were enumerated next door to George Cheney and Rosetta Farley in the 1861 census; she subsequently moved the family to the U.S. prior to the 1871 census of Ontario.  Alonzo and Ann were parents of:
    1. John Cheney, born about 1845 in Mallorytwon.  In the 1861 census of Mallorytown, he was living with his uncle John Farley, Jr. He is probably the John "Chaney", age 34, born in New York to a father from New York and a mother from Ireland, who was enumerated in the 1880 census of Town of Orleans, with wife Elizabeth, age 42, born in Canada to Canadian parents, with the following children:
      1. Joseph Chaney, born about 1863 in Canada.
      2. Anna Chaney, born about 1865 in New York.
      3. John Chaney, born about 1867 in New York.
      4. George Chaney, born about 1870 in New York.
      5. Julia Chaney, born about 1872 in New York.
      6. Charles Chaney, born about 1875 in New York.
      7. Ida Chaney, born about 1877 in New York.
      8. Rozette, born about 1879 in New York.
    2. Margaret Rosetta Cheney, born about 1849 in Mallorytown. In the 1861 census of Mallorytown, she was living with her uncle, John Farley, Jr.  She married second John B. Miller, son of John Miller & Louisa Thibodeau, and resided in the Town of Orleans, Jefferson Co., New York.  By her first marriage to a Mr. Snell she had one daughter:
      1. Hattie Snell; married Charles M. Walter of the Town of Orleans, Jefferson Co., New York.  Parents of:
        1. Eva S. Walter.
        2. Willis Walter.
    3. Ann Cheney, born about 1849 in Mallorytown; married Mr. Timmerman, and resided in the Town of Orleans, Jefferson Co., New York.
    4. William Cheney, born about 1851 in Mallorytown, died before 14 June 1885.
    5. Alonzo E. Cheney, born 3 January 1858 in Mallorytown, though "near Ogdensburg" according to his obituary, died 1931 in Theresa, Jefferson Co., New York in 1931, age 73, a resident of the Town of Alexandria, Jefferson Co., New York.  His obituary read as follows:  "Alonzo E Cheney, 73, died at 10:30 pm Friday at his home, 328 Jay street, Watertown, after an illness of one week with heart trouble. He had been in failing health for some time but had only been confined to his bed for a short time.  He was born near Ogdensburg, Jan 3, 1858, the son of the late Alonzo E. and Ann Farley Cheney. When he was about one year old his father died and he and his mother came to Theresa to live. When he was six years old his mother went to work and he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. E. Covill on a farm at Orleans. While living with them he attended the district school. Later he attended Ithaca high school and Oswego State Normal school. After he finished his course in the Normal school he commenced teaching which profession he followed for ten years. He taught in Orleans, West Theresa, Alexandria Bay and Theresa.  On Aug 26, 1885, he married Dorothy Evelyn Gilts, daughter of Mr and Mrs Conral Gilts of Plessis. They were married in Redwood by the Rev E.D. Cross, pastor of the Baptist church. As soon as they were married they bought a home in Theresa where they lived for 18 years. In 1890 he and E.J. Stratton opened a grocery and crockery store at Theresa under the firm name of Stratton & Cheney in which firm he continued for 12 years. He then sold out his share of the business to Mr. Stratton and moved to Watertown.  While a resident of Theresa he was active in politics, always being a staunch Republican. He was a member of the town board, was justice of the peace, was a member of the board of education and served as New York loan commissioner for several years until the position was abolished. In 1890 he became a Mason in Theresa Lodge, No 174, F&AM, and remained an active member up until his death. At one time he served as junior warden of his lodge.  Shortly after the family moved to Watertown he accepted a position in C.H. Anthony’s dry goods store, having charge of the linen department, which position he held for 17 years. He then entered the employ of F.A. Empsall & Co. department store in a similar capacity, remaining in their employ for eight years at the end of which time he retired from active business due to ill health.  He was a member of the Stone Street Presbyterian church, serving for a number of years as a member of the board of trustees.  He is survived by his widow, by one son, Dr. Howard Alonzo Cheney, a practicing dentist of Yonkers, and by one granddaughter, Esther Evelyn Cheney of Yonkers.  His two brothers, William and John Cheney, and his two sisters, Mrs Rosetta Miller and Mrs Ann Timmerman, have all died, he being the last of his family.  The funeral will be held from his home, 328 Jay street, Monday afternoon at 3 pm. The Rev. Paul F. Boller of the Stone Street Presbyterian church will officiate. The Theresa lodge of Masons will also conduct a Masonic service. Interment will be in the family plot at Brookside cemetery."  Father of:
      1. Howard Alonzo Cheney, a dentist who practised in Yonkers, New York.  Father of:
        1. Esther Evelyn Cheney.
  2. George, mentioned below

        (1)  George R. Cheney, born about 1829 in New York, died about 1891, age 62, at Mallorytown, Town of Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada; married Rosetta Farley, born between 1831 and 1836 in Ireland, died 6 or 7 April 1906 in Mallorytown, Town of Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.  Her sister, Ann Farley, was married to Alonzo Cheney, who was perhaps a brother of George.
In the 1850 census of the Town of Antwerp, Jefferson Co., New York, a George Cheney was enumerated in the household of B. R. Bemus, as a farmer of 21 years, born in New York. Next door, enumerated in a dwelling of her own was "M. Cheney," a female age 19, born in Canada. Although this census record says only "M" hers and George's ages match the George and Rosetta of Ontario, and the birthplaces match too, plus George of Ontario was a farmer, as is this one in the 1850 census for Antwerp (unfortunately, 1851 census records for Yonge no longer exist so he cannot be tracked for that year).  Just a few houses away lived Mrs. Catherine Maria (Cheney) Lynde and her younger sister Harriet Cheney, age 17, both daughters of Caleb Cheney and Rachel Raven.  There is no other record of George and Rosetta in New York for this year so it is tempting to assign this George of Antwerp with the identity of George of Mallorytown; however, this must be tempered by the fact that Caleb and Rachel had their own son named George who according to official records there, was born in New York about 1830, and married 17 January 1892 at Centreville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, Lucy Reid, born 1833 in Canada, daughter of Mathew Reid and Lucy Jenkinson.  SIgnificantly, the record names Caleb Cheney and Rachel Raven as parents of this George, and the marriage took place the year following the death of George of Mallorytown, definitively ruling out Caleb and Rachel as possible parents of George of Mallorytown.
In the 1848 census of Town of Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario (the Mallorytown area), Alonzo Cheney and his wife Ann Farley (sister of Rosetta) were enumerated in a house on the same lot where George and Rose were living by the time maps were map in 1864. Ann and Rose's parents John and Mary Farley lived only five lots away, a distance of about one and a quarter miles.
From the preceding evidence the following series of life events can be conjectured for George and Rose: When Alonzo Cheney married Ann Farley, her parents, John & Mary Farley, may have given them land nearby, or else the newly-weds chose to purchase the land so she could be near her parents. Alonzo and Ann (Farley) Cheney introduced her sister Rosetta M. Farley to George Cheney. Alonzo and Ann (Farley) Cheney then probably sold part of their lot near Mallorytown to George and Rose, explaining how George ended up in Canada.
From 1861 to 1891, George Cheney and his wife Rosetta were enumerated in the census in the same house at Mallorytown.
