 DOUGLAS 



(1)  Sir William Douglas, called "the Hardy" and "Longlegs", died 1302, 1st Lord of Douglas, Governor of Berwick.  He was taken prisoner when the town was besieged by the English, but he swore fealty to Edward I in 1291 but commanded the Baliol forces at Berwick Castle.  He surrendered to the English in 1296.  Upon renewal of his homage to Edward I, he was restored to his possessions in seven Scottish counties.  Later in 1297, he joined William Wallace's uprising for Scottish independence.  He married a daughter of Sir William Keith, born about 1236, died before 1293, and Barbara de Seton, born about 1216.

James, called "the Good", born 1286, died 1330, Lord of Douglas.  He joined the revolt of Robert the Bruce.  He escaped with Bruce from the battle of Methuen, three times destroyed English garrisons in his castle of Douglas.  By his raids into England he earned the dreaded name of "the Black Douglas."  He took Teviotdale, commanded the left wing at Bannockburn in 1314, invaded Yorkshire, defeated the army of the archbishop of York  and the bishop of Ely at Mitton in 1319, he surprised the English at Weardale in 1327, nearlt capturing King Edward III.  During the peace that followed, while carrying the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce to the Holy Land according to the dying king's wish, he fell to his death figting Moors in Andalusia.

(2) Sir Archibald Douglas, Earl of Douglas, born about 1297 probably in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland, was killed in 1333 at the Battle of Hallidon Hill, Northumberland, England. He conquered Edward de Baliol at Annan in 1332 and was regent of Scotland in 1333.  He married Beatrice de Lindsay, born about 1291, probably at Crawford, Lanarkshire, Scotland, daughter of Sir Alexander de Lindsay and his wife, who was daughter of Alexander Stewart, High Stewart of Scotland, born about 1214, died about 1283, and Jean Macrory, born about 1210.  Parents of:
 
 
 
 
(3) William Douglas, born about 1323/1327 probably in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland, died about May 1384, created 1st Earl of Douglas in 1358, and by marriage Earl of Mar.  He returned from training in France in 1348 and recovered Douglasdale and Ettrick Forest to Scottish allegience.  He was present at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.  He was warden of the east marches.  He rebelled against King David II in 1363 in consequence of royal misappropriation of funds raised for ransom.  He was reconciled and swore allegiance to Robert II in 1371.  He was justiciar of southern Scotland from 1371 until his death.  He had issue by his wife's sister-in-law, Margaret, daughter of Thomas Stewart, Earl of Angus, and Margaret St. Clair.  Parents of:

 

(4) George Douglas, born about 1380, died 1403, he was created 1st Earl of Angus by grant of his mother's earldom of Angus in 1389.  He was the illegitimate son of William, 1st Earl of Douglas, and his wife's sister-in-law Margaret Stewart, Countess of Angus (third creation) and of Mar (by marriage).  He held a seat in the shire of Forfar (or Angus).  He married in 1397 Mary Stewart, daughter of King Robert Stewart III.  He was taken prisoner at Homildon Hill in 1402 and died of the Black Plague in England.  Parents of:
