Lineage: Jemima2, Richard1

FORD, c.1756-1862 Related Families:  Hall | Avery

Migration: Mansfield, CT>Schenectady Co., NY>Oswego Co., NY

        (1)  Richard Ford, born about 1756, died either after 1810 in Duanesburgh, Schenectady Co., New York, or after 1815 in Parish, Oswego Co., New York.  Richard married in in February 1780 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, Jemima Hall, born 31 October 1758 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, (according to records of that town and also in records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh), died May 1841 in Parish, Oswego Co., New York, buried in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Parish, with her daughter, Mrs. Avery.  Her tombstone says, "died May 1841, wife of Richard Ford."
Richard and Jemima named their first two children after themselves, the third child was named Zerviah, and the next known child was named Ephraim, after Jemima's father.  If a naming pattern can be assumed here, then it is reasonable to conclude that Richard's father may have been related to a Zerviah Ford.  No birth record exists for a Richard Ford in Connecticut around 1756, so it is also reasonable to assume that he was born out of state.  In fact, a Zerviah Ford was born about 1725 in Marshfield, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts to Elisha Ford and Elizabeth Oakman, and her residence and birth year makes him a likely candidate as an aunt or cousin for Richard Ford of Connecticut.
In 1810, Richard Ford Sr. was enumerated in the town of Duanesburgh with one male under 10, three males between 16 and 26, and one over 45 years of age.  Also in the home were one female between 16 and 26, and one female over 45 years of age.  In the same town, Richard Ford, Jr., born on 9 September 1782 in Mansfield, Connecticut, was enumerated with his wife Marcy, both between ages 16 and 26 years.
Several of Richard and Jemima's children, including Jemima herself, have births listed in the registers of the Christ Episcopal Church at Duanesburgh.

About the year 1815, several members of the Methodist Episcopal Church formed a class in Schoolhouse No. 1, Mexico, now Parish, Oswego County, and a Richard Ford was appointed leader; it is not clear whether this was Richard Sr. or Jr.
In the 1820 census of Oswego County, a Richard Ford and a William Ford were enumerated as neighbors in the Town of Constantia. In 1830, Richard Ford, Jr., was enumerated in the Town of Hastings
.
Jemima Hall Ford is buried in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery, Parish, Oswego Co., New York, with her daughter Jemima Ford, and son-in-law William Avery.  That Richard Ford Sr. is not also buried in Parish with his wife is perhaps an indication that he died before the family moved to Oswego County, or perhaps his grave can no longer be identified.

Confirmed children of Richard Ford and Jemima Hall:

  1. Jemima, born 16 July 1780 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, died 1862 in Parish, Oswego Co., New York; married about 1799 or 1800, either in Connecticut or in Duanesburg, New York, William Avery, born 1774 in Connecticut.  Though her tombstone says that she was born in 1778, her birth record in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, indicates that she was born 16 July 1780.
  2. Richard, born on 9 September 1782 in Mansfield, Connecticut, according to records there, but born on September 8 according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh. He was enumerated in 1810 with his wife Marcy, both between ages 16 and 26 years.  Richard Jr. served as a private in David Prior's Regiment of New York Militia during the War of 1812.
    1. Ephraim Earl Ford, died 21 December 1816, age 4 years 6 months and 15 days, buried in Esperance Cemetery, Duanesburgh -- resting place of many Averys.
  3. Zerviah, born 8 March 1785 in Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, according to records there, but born on March 9 according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh.
  4. William, born 24 June 1787, according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh. In the 1850 census he was enumerated as a 63 year old farmer from Connecticut, living in the home of Major (age 36) and Lucy A. (age 33) Johnson, and their children, all from Connecticut.
  5. Ephraim Earl, born 26 July 1791, according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh, died after 1856 in Oswego Co., New York.  He was undoubtedly named after his grandfather Ephraim Hall.  In 1829, Ephraim E. Ford erected the first store in Parish, a small building which was enlarged and later owned by the Mosher brothers.  He kept it until 1856, part of the time in company with Paul W. Allen.  By 1877, ten stores had been built in the town, including those devoted to drugs and hardware.  Ephraim was also the first postmaster of Parish, and he held that office until he moved out of town in 1856.  From 1841 to 1843, Ephraim served as town supervisor.  He married Nancy and had several children, some of whom were living with them when the 1855 census of Parish was made, namely:
    1. Chancey
    2. Byron
    3. Mary S.
  6. John, born 1 September 1794, according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh.
  7. Charles Ford, not confirmed as a child of Richard and Jemima, born about 1796, died 9 May 1886, age 90 years, 3 months, resident of Parish, Oswego Co., New York; married about 1827 Sarah "Sally" Palmer, daughter of George Palmer and Hannah Harris of Stonington, Connecticut.  The first death that occurred in the town of Parish was that of Jonathan Bedell, one of the first settlers, who was killed in 1806 by the fall of a tree.  According to The History of Oswego County, New York (Everts, 1877), Bedell was buried on the Charles Ford farm.  The Charles Ford born in 1796 would have been only 10 years old at the time of Bedell's death, so the author must have been speaking of the owner of the property in 1877, which was Charles, Jr.  Charles Sr. & Charles Jr. are buried together in Pleasant Lawn Cemetery.
    1. Charles Harris, born 6 February 1832 in Parish, Oswego Co., New York, contributed facts about the Ford Family to the author of the Parish Town section of The History of Oswego County, New York (Everts, 1877).
    2. Philo P., born 7 June 1841 in Parish, was living at home in the 1855 census of Parish.
  8. Sarah, born 9 July 1798, according to the records of the Christ Episcopal Church of Duanesburgh.
