  HINDS, c.1582-1811 Related Families:  Watford | Ingersoll | Ward | Maverick | Pratt | Junkins | Chamberlain

Migration: Bedfordshire, ENG>Salem, MA>Marblehead, MA>Bridgewater, MA>Westmoreland, NH

        (1) Walter Haines, born about 1582 in Bedfordshire, England; married 27 April 1607 in Renhold, Bedfordshire, England, Mary Watford, born about 1586 in Bedfordshire, England.  Parents of:

        (2) William Haynes, born 6 June 1624 in Renhold, Bedfordshire, England, died 1644, probably in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts; married in 1644 in Salem, Sarah Ingersoll, born 1 July 1627, died 1719 in Houlton, Essex Co., Massachusetts.  Parents of:

        (3) William Hinds, born 1657 in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts, died 1728 in Marblehead,
Essex Co., Massachusetts; married in 1681 in Marblehead, Abigail Ward, born 1663 in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts.  She was baptized with the rest of her siblings in Salem on 6 August 1669.
Abigail was the daughter of Maj. Samuel Ward and Abigail Maverick, whom he married in 1662 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.  Samuel was born 18 November 1638 in Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, died 1690 in Quebec, Canada.  He was son of Samuel Ward, born 1591 in England, died 30 August 1682 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, a son of Henry Ward, born about 1565 in England, died 15 May 1642 in Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.  Parents of:

        (3) John Hines, born 14 February 1682 in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts; married first on 25 November 1700 at Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts, Constance Bennett.  They had three children.
The Mayflower Society has not recognized any other wife for John; thus, there has been great debate as to whether Susannah Hinds, wife of Henry Chamberlain can claim descent from William & Abigail Hinds, since it's known that her mother's name was Hannah.
On 11 August 1709 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, a John Haines married the widow Shaw, Hannah Pratt, according to the "American Genealogist" (38:1, October 1862, p70-74), daughter of Joseph Pratt and Sarah Junkins, (not daughter of Joseph Shaw as some suggest). If this John Haines was the same man as the John Hinds who married Constance Bennett, then nine years elapsed between their marriage, the birth of their children, her assumed death, his subsequent move to Bridgewater, and his final marriage to Hannah (Pratt) Shaw.
While debate still rages over the identity of Susannah's father, one document ensures us of her descent from Isaac Allerton, the Mayflower passenger -- her death certificate on file at Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire, indicates that her parents were William & Abigail Hinds.  While the document technically skips a generation, it can be relied on as proof that Susannah of Westmoreland was directly descended from William Hinds and Abigail Ward.
