(9) Samuel Kilbourn, born 25 January 1699/1700 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut; married Mary Garret and settled in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, perhaps a daughter of Joseph Garrett and Mary Elmer. He was one of the thirteen original members of St. Michael's Parish in 1745 and is spoken of by the Rev. Isaac Jones, in the Appendix to his Centennial Sermon, as "a man of great energy and usefulness, from whom the church in Litchfield expected much." Samuel and Mary had seven children, all of whose births are recorded on the Litchfield Town Records.

(10) Capt. John Kilbourn, born 12 April 1735 in Litchfield, Litchfield Co., Connecticut; married Anna Smith, daughter of Abiel Smith, of Litchfield. About 1768, John removed with his father-in-law to Adams, Massachusetts, where they were among the earliest settlers. The first dwelling erected by James in Adams occupied the site of the first Friend's Meeting House. In 1797, with most of the family, John and Anna removed to Plainfield, Otsego Co., New York, where he died 5 September 1820, aged 85. Anna died in the same town 30 November 1823, aged 82 years. John entered the Revolutionary army in 1777 and marched for Ticonderoga. In August of the same year, he was sergeant in Capt. Parker's company. In October 1780, he commanded a company in Col. Symond's regiment "at the Vermont alarm."
Children:
(11) James Kilborn, born 16 July 1772 in Adams, Massachusetts; married Mary Knapp. They resided in Adams until 1798 when they removed to Plainfield, Otsego Co., New York. In 1809, they left Plainfield and settled in Clayton, Jefferson Co., New York, where they died.
Children:
Mary,
born 29 November 1800 in Plainfield, Otsego Co., New York, died 1836 in Adams,
Jefferson
Co., New York;
married William Barnard in 1827. Parents of:
(12) Maj. Samuel Kilborn,
born 25 March 1807 in Plainfield, Otsego Co., New York, died 31 March 1881 in
town of Orleans, Jefferson Co., New York.
The 1832 tax roll of Orleans lists Samuel Kilborn with 2 acres, valued at $500,
taxes of $2.41 paid. He was aid-de-camp to General Rouse.
According to the Town of Orleans vital records 1848-1920, Samuel married on
13 May 1849 Amanda Cole,
born 1830, died 15 September 1913 age 83 years 9 months. Rev. E. Sawyer
officiated at the ceremony, held in the Town of Orleans.
In the 1850 and later federal censuses of LaFargeville, town of Orleans, Samuel
had his residence on Main Street, LaFargeville, and was identified as "hotel
keeper." Census schedules indicate that they were neighbors to his son-in-law's
mother, Salome (Steiner) Diepolder.
Equipped with living quarters, Orleans House (below)
is the hotel that Samuel kept. He owned it during the Civil War and at
that time it was known as Kilborn Hotel. The hotel was built about 1825
and originally served as John De LaFarge's land office. Around 1838 it
was converted into a hotel and stagecoach stop. From 1848 through the
1870's, Dr. Coe, a dentist made a circuit through Jefferson County villages
treating patients. His account
books indicate that he conducted treatments in LaFargeville at "S. Kilborn's
Hotel." Samuel himself is listed as a patient. The hotel was enlarged
in 1910. Later on, his great-great-granddaughter, singer/guitarist Lila
Carter,
occasionally performed in the downstairs bar with her husband. Orleans House
continued to function as a hotel until the 1990's, when the current owners closed
its doors and converted it into a private residence.
On 26 October 1860, the Kilborn family was enumerated in the federal census
at LaFargeville as family number 274 in dwelling number 274 (page 36).
Samuel reported his age as 57, occupation as hotelkeeper, and personal estate
valued at $500; with him in the home was wife Amanda, age 37, born in New York, and
son Monroe, age nine, who was attending school that year.
On 31 March 1881, Samuel died, presumably in LaFargeville. On 20 June
1894, at age 65, Amanda married John E. Hoover, a widower and carpenter age
55, son of John Hoover and Emiline Nellis, born Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada.
The couple continued to reside in the house Amanda and Samuel had lived in in
LaFargeville. John E. Hoover died 29 December 1900, age 61 years 9 months 17
days. He had lived 50 years in Orleans. Afterwards, Amanda remianed int
he home, along with her son Monroe J. Kilborn. In
1913, after several months of poor health, she fell and broke her hip; as a
result of complications she died a few days later, age 80. Her obituary was
published in the Watertown Daily Times, Tuesday Afternoon, September 16, 1913,
pg 7, col. 3.
Monroe
"Roe" Kilborn, a bachelor his whole life, remained in the Kilborn
House. Soon after, several parties became interested in taking advantage of
Roe's increasing age and inability to care for himself and took legal action
to secure the property. In June 1916, a judge ordered that the house be put
up for auction, and it ultimately purchased by Zion Fitchett of Tanners Corners.
In September of the same year, Justice of the Peace Baxter ordered that Roe
Kilborn leave the home. The village high school, situated next door, which was
to benefit from the deal in the form having the property for purposes of erecting
a playground, made no objection to him staying a short time until alternate
living arrangements could be made; however, Roe, not wanting to give up his
home, remained. In May 1917, Roe was ordered to vacate the home, and this time
his belongings were put out in the street, and destroyed by order of the health
inspector. Finally, in August 1917, the house was razed to make way for the
playground.
Monroe died in 1923, at age
72.
Samuel and Amanda are buried together in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville, along
with son Monroe, daughter Mary and her husband Michael.

The
Diepolder & Kilborn plot can
be found on the right side of the entrance road in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville.
The main monument, clearly a replacement, sits on the original base with
the name Diepolder in relief on both sides. Crumbled remains of the
original bell-shaped pinnacle rest atop. The plot borders are marked
by four gray granite blocks inscribed with the letter "D". Each family
member's name, birth and death date is printed on the monument and each
has an additional small headstone over their gravesite. The two headstones
in the lower right corner, belong to, (from left), Michael, or "Father,"
and Mary, or "Mother". Three headstones rest behind the monument.
The one to the far left belongs to Monroe, and the one with the taller stone
behind it near the monument belongs to Amanda Cole. Samuel Kilborn's
stone sits to the right of Amanda's, but is hidden in the picture.
Every stone in the plot can be clearly read. Engelbert Diepolder and
Sophia, Michael's first wife, are buried next to one another several yards
further towards the back of the cemetery. |
