Village, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts; married 10 October 1610 in London, Middlesex
Co., England, Hannah
Howse, born about 1594 in Eastwell,
Kent, England, died 16 February 1633 in England. John arrived in America at
Plymouth in 1634 aboard the ship Griffin.
He moved to Scituate where he founded the church there before finally removing
to Barnstable where he died. Today, John is considered the founder of Barnstable;
his house is now home to Sturgis
Library, the oldest library on Cape Cod. A Bible
he brought over on the Griffin
survives, including a page said to have been partially burned on the voyage
which he filled in from memory in his own handwriting. Father of:

Lathrop,
born February 1622/1623 in England, died
20 February 1699/1700 in Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut; married Elizabeth
Scudder, born 31 July 1625 in England, died
1 March 1699/1700 in Norwich, New London Co. Connecticut. Their marriage was
recorded by his father on the Barnstable Church Register as follows: "My
sonn Samuel & Elizabeth Scudder Marryed at my house by Mr. Freeman Nov.
28, 1644." Samuel brought his father's Bible to Norwich with
him around 1664 and passed it on to his son Samuel, Jr. He is considered one
of the founders of Norwich.
