(1) Jan Rinkhout,
born about 1635, in Pommeren, North Holland, died before 1670 in Albany,
New York, and his brother Daniel, were the early bakers in Albany, being
there at least as early as 1653. His brother, Daniel, was at Albany
in 1653. Daniel died in 1662 when his canoe, loaded with trade goods and
bound for Quebec, was caught in a storm on Lake Champlain in 1667. In his
will, Daniel gave his house in Albany to Jan and twenty-five guilders to
another brother, Aertman, in Pommeren, Netherlands.
Jan married twice: his first wife was Eva
Jurriens,
by whom he had three daughters and one son; his second wife was Elizabeth
Drinckvelt by whom he had no children.
Jan bought a farm at Schenectady and in 1670 his wife rented the bakery
in Albany to Anthony Lespinard. Jan Rinckhout became a recluse, living
and dying alone in a hut on his farm.
