(1)
John Scholl
and wife, of Dillenburg, Nassau, Principality of the Prince of Orange,
Germany, emigrated to America, bringing with them three sons, Johan
Jost,
John, and George, and leaving a daughter behind in the Fatherland.
Family
legend says that he asked his children which of them chose to stay in Germany
and inherit that portion of the estate which he could not take with him
to the new country. The daughter chose to stay. So the father and mother
and the sons sailed to New York City in 1769. They settled at Fort
Herkimer, about two miles from the village of Herkimer, in Herkimer County,
New York.
Children:
-
a daughter,
name unknown
-
Johan Jost,
mentioned below
-
John;
married and settled near Lowville, Lewis County, New York, where his sons
William and Conradt also settled. They spelled the family name as it is
now written -- Shull -- and their descendants have followed that orthography.

George
(2) Johan Jost Shull,
born about 7 October 1751 in Nassau, Dillenburg, Principality of the Prince
of Orange, Germany. He died 10 January 1837 in Herkimer County, New
York, and is buried in Indian Castle Cemetery, Town of Danube, Herkimer
County. He immigrated with his parents from the Palatinate region
of Germany when seventeen years of age and settled at Fort Herkimer in
1769. He was subsequently a farmer, miller and merchant at Ephratah, Fulton
Co., New York. He moved to Lowville, Lewis County, New York, in 1800 and
in 1810 he removed to the town of Danube, Herkimer, County.
There is some dispute over the identity of Johan's first wife. John William
Scholl’s genealogy of the family published in 1930 claims that he married
Marilania (i.e. Maria Magdelena) Schmidt (Smith), born in Europe in 1749,
died at Lowville, New York, 27 September 1794. However a profile of the
Shull family in America in the History of Montgomery and Fulton Counties,
(reprint 1981), claims that “the son Johan Jost married Catherine, daughter
of Heinrich Winkell, of Ephratah, in 1773, and settled on the estate of
his wife, on the hill north of the village of Ephratah,” which later became
the Murray farm. Further research needs to be done to determine the identity
of Johan’s first wife.
On 8 July 1788 at the Reformed Dutch Church at Stone Arabia, Herkimer County,
Johan married Anna Eva Getman,
of Palatine, New York. Anna was born about 17 December 1767, died 14 January
1842 in Herkimer County, and is buried in Indian Castle Cemetery, Town
of Danube, according to cemetery records there. Their marriage is
confirmed in David Kendall Martin’s recent work, The Eighteenth Century
Zimmerman Family of the Mohawk Valley (1994), in the will of Christian
Getman, made 15 April 1803, as well as in Johan's Revolutionary War Pension
Application (#W16396).
A document written by John Herkimer and contained in the Incorporation
Book A, page 35, at the Herkimer County Clerk's Office, Herkimer, says:
"At a meeting duly notified acording to law of the members of the congregation
called the Union Church Congregation of Indian Castle in the town of Danube
in the county of Herkimer held at the church meeting house of said congregation
on this 29th day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty, the
day expressed in notices calling this meeting for the purpose of incorporating
this congregation according to the statute in such case made and provided.
We Peter R. Bellinger, Jr., and Nicholas Lawyer, two of the members of
this congregation, were duly chosen and appointed to preside at this meeting
for the election of trustees and incorporating this society, do certify
that George Dominick, Peter Bellinger, Jr., and John
Jost Shull were duly elected trustees of this
Society by plurality of voices that being the [?] to be elected and chosen,
and we do certify that the name and title by which the said society its
trustees and their successors shall be known as called the Union Church
of the Indian Castle in the town of Danube and in the County of Herkimer
given under our hands and sealed this 29th day of February in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty."
"Henyost" Shull, as his name was often recorded, entered the military in
1775 and served at various times until the end of the war. He ranked
as corporal and later as ensign at the famous battle of Oriskany under
the command of Col. Jacob G. Klock,
to whom he later became distantly related by his son's marriage.
He was later a lieutenant in the Revolution, as shown by the Treasury Pay
books cited in New York in the Revolution, (p 175). He is also recorded
in Col. Rensselaer's regiment from Albany County.

Jacob I. Sholl, both of Danube, were witnesses and proved the will on 18
April 1859.
Records of the Consistory of the Reformed Dutch Church at Indian Castle
indicate that on 5 August 1860 -- not long after Jacob's death -- under
the leadership of Rev. Joseph Kneaskern, Anna Klock "widow of Jacob Sholl"
was received into membership by virtue of letter from the Presbyterian
