George and Lizzie lived 1 1/2 miles northeast of Mooresville. Children were: George Henry BEST Jr., Russell H. BEST, Gladys BEST.

Ann Kaufman, Fremont, California: "Denny Ellerman says Humphrey Best, Sr., came to Madison County, Kentucky, from Rowan County or Mecklenberg County, North Carolina. There is a land sale in Rowan County from a Henderson to a Humphrey Best, both of Mecklenberg County in 1767 and an administration and estate inventory of a Humphrey Best who died in 1769 in Rowan Co. There were two Humphrey Bests in western North Carolina, because there is another one who shows up on the Surry County tax lists for 1771, 1772, 1774 and 1775 with one tithable as 'Umphre Best'."

Humphrey Best's will left everything to his children by Catherine Enyart but his third wife, China, went to court and she received her share. She said she had a child by him. Parents: Humphrey BEST and Mary "Polly" CARTWRIGHT.

Spouse: Elizabeth WHITELEY. Humphrey BEST and Elizabeth WHITELEY were married on 2 Dec 1832 in Clay Co., Missouri. They filed for divorce on 21 Jul 1835 in Clay Co., Missouri. In her petition for divorce, Elizabeth also asked for alimony. An alias writ was issued for Humphrey in Carroll County. On May 13, 1836, Elizabeth petitioned the court to prevent Joel Turnham and John C. Hawkins from turning over the money they had been holding for Humphrey. Humphrey filed suit on March 22, 1837, but the next day Turnham and Hawkins were ordered to give the money to Elizabeth.

Spouse: China. Humphrey BEST and China were married after Jul 1835. Ordered that China Best be allowed fifteen dollars for the year 1842 for the maintenance of Oliver Best, a minor of two years of age. (Ref. Livingston Co. Court Record Book A, p. 116.) Children were: Oliver BEST.

Isaac BEST was born about 1770. He died in 1837 in Texas. Isaac Best and family came from Gerrard Co., Kentucky to Montgomery Co., Missouri by 1808. Then most of the children accompanied their father to Texas. Isaac's children are named in "Pioneer Families of Missouri," pages 241 and 243. Parents: Humphrey BEST and Mary "Polly" CARTWRIGHT.
