It was then that he applied for a license to marry a woman he said recently came to Mooresville from Kansas. County physician Dowell issued a written protest, referring to Burris being mentally incapable of entering into a marriage contract.

Joseph Burris boarded with the John T. Roberts family in Sampsel Twp. in 1900. The census taker wrote of Joseph: "This is a simple-minded person and does not know enough to tell anything."

When Mr. Burris died the citizens of Mooresville had just completed building a home for him which he occupied. His burial expenses were paid by Mooresville citizens.
