Lymon DAYTON was born about 1816 in Green Mountain, Vermont. He died on 5 Feb 1891 in Trenton, Grundy, Missouri. "The funeral of the late Lyman Dayton took place from the Christian Church in Trenton on the 5th inst. Mr. Dayton was one of the pioneer settlers of this county, coming here in 1835 and removing to Grundy county in 1869. He was the father of Mrs. James Hereford and an uncle by marriage of Sheriff Taylor. His age was 75 years." -- The Chillicothe Morning Constitution, Feb. 12, 1891.
He went with a party of 14 men to California in 1849 in search of gold. All but two, including Mr. Dayton, died of "mountain fever." He was enumerated in Greene County, Illinois in 1850 and reported his occupation as wood chopper. He farmed in Grundy Co., Missouri in 1870 and kept a boarding house in Trenton in 1880.
