Rev. John Wesley FRENCH was born on 1 Feb 1822 in Stewart Co., Tennessee. Rev. French moved from Mooresville Twp. to Jackson Township, Livingston County, near Lock Springs, in 1868. He preached and conducted marriages and funerals in a wide area of Daviess, Caldwell and Livingston Counties. Rev. French was the first pastor of the New Design Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lock Springs. In addition to his occupation as a farmer, he was pastor of the Mooresville Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1871 and 1872, and served on that church's board of directors in 1881. French of this county, aged sixty-five years, stood side by side with Mrs. Mary French, also of this county, aged sixty years, while Judge Henry Cowgill, about the same age, pronounced the words, which bound together in a common bond, the brief span of years yet allotted them, on the hypothesis of the age duration of life.

"Down in Tennessee half a century ago the parents of the couple lived on adjoining farms and Mary and John were playmates and conceived a warm friendship for each other which never diminished. Both, however, wedded and the mates of each passed to the great beyond.

"They met some years after and the friendship of youth drifted into the love of maturity. Although old in years their hearts are young."
