PAST AND PRESENT OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY (1913) says he was born 7 Sep 1839 and died in 1890, aged 83 years (sic). He was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Livingston, Missouri. The surname is HARTGROVE in the 1850 Federal census, Livingston County, Missouri. In 1860, Benjamin HARGRAVES, age 52, lived next door to John HARGRAVES, age 77. No other evidence is found to support the father-son relationship of John Hartgrove and Benjamin Hargrave.

He emigrated from Tennessee to Howard Co., Missouri in 1818, stayed two years, then lived in Saline County, Missouri until 1835. Then to Livingston Co. where he remained. He entered land in T59R25 before 1843.

There is conflicting information concerning his marriage to Tabitha Nave and her sister, Rebecca Nave. Family researchers suspect that Rebecca married one of Benjamin Hargrave's brothers.

Benjamin donated the land on which Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church now stands.

He was buried on 21 Jul 1916 in McCoskrie Cemetery, Livingston, Missouri. Benjamin HARTGROVE, age 13, was enumerated with the family of James HARTGROVE/HARGRAVE in southwest Livingston County in 1850. Ref census page 90B. Probate records indicate Benjamin was a son of William Hargrave and was placed with the James Hartgrove family by the court. Parents: William HARGRAVE and unknown.
