His obituary says when he settled in Mooresville the members of the Christian denomination were holding services in the depot. (If this is true, it must have been a stage depot as the railroad came to the area in 1859.) He donated the land on which the Mooresville Christian Church is located. His obituary identifies his middle initial as "L." He served with the Missouri State Guard (Co. A, First Missouri Cavalry, Confederate) when he was shot in the head on August 10, 1861 at Oak Hills (Wilson's Creek) near Springfield, Missouri. Excerpt from PAST AND PRESENT OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MISSOURI (1913): "James W. Hudgins was a pioneer farmer in the Mooresville area. He went to California at the time of the gold rush of 1849 and spent a few years in the mines of that state, returning in 1852 by way of the Isthmus of Panama. When he again arrived in Livingston County he resumed his agricultural pursuits, continuing to develop his farm until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Confederate army under General Slack and served until the close of hostilities. After his discharge he returned to the farm and there died in 1908 (sic)." Family tradition says he was wounded, probably at the Battle of Elk Horn Tavern in northern Arkansas, in 1862. After his recovery he stayed on at the unidentified hospital where he nursed other wounded soldiers. Parents: John Foster HUDGINS and Frances "Fanny" WALLACE. Spouse: Manervia WOOLSEY. James Wallace HUDGINS and Manervia WOOLSEY were married on 5 Sep 1855 in Livingston Co., Missouri. The marriage date entered by Jefferson Stamper, J. P., is clearly 1865. However, the entry was made in Livingston Co. Marriage Book 1 which recorded marriages between 1837 and 1863. If the marriage had occurred in 1865 rather than 1855, it would have been recorded in Book 2. Minervia's second marriage was to Rufus M. Shattuck on July 1, 1860. The marriage record identifies the bride as Minervia Hudgins, proving the earlier marriage to James W. Hudgins. The second marriage of James and Minervia, in 1868, is recorded in Book 2. They filed for divorce on 13 Aug 1859 in Chillicothe, Livingston, Missouri. Minerva charged Jim with abuse. The divorce was granted, and he was ordered to pay alimony of $65 per year for five years. Court records say there were two children by this first marriage of Jim and Minerva. They were married on 29 Jan 1868 in Livingston Co., Missouri. Jim Hudgins left home before July 1860. He later joined the 2nd Missouri Cavalry (Confederate), Company G. When he didn't return to Mooresville after the Civil War he was declared legally dead and his estate was settled on 31 March 1865. He then returned home and remarried Minerva in 1868. Jim was 5 ft. 6 in. tall, light hair, blue eyes, fair complexion in 1865. He was a member of United Confederate Veterans, Camp 541, at Mooresville. Children were: child HUDGINS, Angeline HUDGINS, Gilbert "Gill" HUDGINS, Thomas Woolsey HUDGINS. Janet Elaine HUDGINS.
