Award of Contract

The people of this neighborhood are much pleased with the awards of the government contracts for transporting army supplies to New Mexico. The decision was made by the Quartermaster at Ft. Leavenworth some days since, and Majors, Russell & Co. are the ostensible and responsible contractors, but it is well understood that a very considerable amount of the freight will come into the hands of the freighters of Jackson County. Large sub-contracts have already been secured on the most favorable of terms by the following firms --: Bryant, Bernard & Co., Scott & Co., and Irwin & Magraw.

The bids were for transportation from Ft. Leavenworth and Kansas City but we have not yet learned what amount goes from this latter city. We are gratified, however, to see so large an amount of business apportioned to Jackson County, as it must necessarily have a very salutary effect upon the stock market of the county and place a great deal of money in the pockets of our farmers and business men, and relieve materially the stringency of monetary affairs among us.
