John Mac Kennon built the Cape Sable lighthouse in 1860. H e was the only man who could build an eight sided buildin g in Canada at the time. The loss of the SS Hungarian in 1 860 emphasized the need for the light. The light was compl eted in 1861 with Captain Harvy Doane as the first keeper. 96
