According to the DAR Patriot Index He served in the American War of Independence as PVT, PS, MD, and died 15 Sep 1830.  Bennett served in the American Revolution from Montgomery , MD in the Upper Battalion, 3rd Company, under Zadock Magruder, 1st Col. and Frans. Deakins, Lt. Col.

Mary Mulligan

 On September 1, 1781 the family moved from Baltimore, MD to Wilkes, NC. before the birth of his third son, William David on January 1, 1783.   Wilkes, NC is where Daniel Boone lived prior to moving into Kentucky, and one of Bennett's contemporaries.  the Family then moved to Virginia, and he appeared on the tax rolls of Montgomery, VA for the year 1788.  The Family moved west into the Clinch Valley in Russell, VA, and Bennett appeard on the tax list between 1796 and 1798.

The Family moved north in 1801, and settled near the fork of the Big Sandy River in Mason, VA near present day Louisa , Lawrence Co, KY and Fort Gay, Wayne Co, WV.  Those making the journey north were BENNETT (age 47), wife, MARY (age 46), daughter, ELIZABETH JANE (age 23), son, JOSEPH SAMUEL (age 20), son WILLIAM DAVID (age 18), ELISHA THOMAS (age 17), JEREMIAH M. (age 16), LEWIS HARMON (age 13) son MICHAEL (age 11), son JAMES (age 8)

According to W. Ely in his "Wellman Family," 1887, BENNETT ranked as one of the greatest "huntsmen" of his day.

The 1810 census lists his household as follows: 
One male under 10 (ROBERT G.) one female under 10 (HALLIE) one male 10-15 (JAMES) one female over 45 (MARY) one male 16-25 (MICHAEL) one male over 45 (BENNETT) In the 1820 census of FLOYD, KY, pg. 46 (dated 23 Feb 1821) , He is listed as: one male over 45 (BENNETT) one female over 45 (MARY) one female 16-25 (HALLIE)

Bennett and Mary appear living in the household of son Jeremiah in the 1830 Census which was taken before his death.

Mary was still living in Jeremiah's household at age 85 when the 1840 census was taken.
