  General Notes:

The author's 2nd Great-Granduncle

"Sprague Families in America", by W. V. Sprague, page 282. Jane Steed resided at Beech Hill, WV: "William D. Hall. was born on 17 Feb 1843. He married Rachel Devore. William next married Jane Steed."

Rebecca Jean Blouir Freeland, who is the widow of William D. Hall's grandson, visited William's grave and found that his grave is marked with a civil war marker that reads, "Co. F--63 Oh. Inf."  The grave is also marked by a post that reads "GAR" 1861-1865.  The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army who had served in the American Civil War. The GAR was among the first organized interest groups in American politics. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). According to the SUVCW website, (www.suvcw.org), "the final Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic was held in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949 and the last member, Albert Woolson died in 1956 at the age of 109 years."
