Fourth Generation

33. George A HARTKE125 was born on 15 Jun 1874.125 He was in the news in 1895.15
4 Oct. 1895 -- George Hartke will take a position with Larson & Sons in Paxton, about Nov. 1, or as soon as he can get his business settled here.

18 Oct 1895 - Geo. Hartke sold and transferred his goods to Mr. H.C.H. Stege; Hale Bros. moved their stock of goods into the store vacated by Geo. Hartke. We hope they will soon be at home in their new quarters and do a thriving business.

1 Nov 1895 - Geo. Hartke intended to go to Paxton Sunday, but changed his mind and drove to Thawville. How could he do otherwise? Chronicle readers know that "somebody" lives in that hamlet.

15 Nov 1895 - George Hartke made a flying trip to Paxton last Wednesday.

18 Dec 1895 - We just found out that Geo. Hartke is the best sprinter in town, a challenge to the world.

He died on 3 Aug 1955. He was buried in Thawville, Illinois.

George A HARTKE and Emma RINGEISEN were married on 29 Jun 1898 in Thawville, Illinois.126,127
The church record reads: "Geo. Hartke to Emma Ringeisen, 29 Jun." This was a double wedding. The other couple were Minna Ringeisen and The Rev. H. Hafner. Emma's obituary says she was married in Thawville, and the newspaper article below seems to bear that out, but the church record is entered at St. John's, Buckley, because it was Rev. Blanken who performed the ceremony.

WEDDINGS IN IROQUOIS COUNTY

The Buckley Chronicle, July 1, 1898

Double Wedding
It was a gala day in Thawville Wednesday afternoon and evening, it being the occasion of the marriage of Emma and Minnie Ringelsen (sic) to Geo. Hartke and Rev. H. Hafner. The ceremony occurred in the Lutheran Church at 3 o'clock, Rev. Blanken, of Buckley, officiating. The brides presented a handsome appearance, being attired in beautiful dresses, especially suited to the occasion, while the grooms were clothed in the conventional black. The bridesmaids and groomsmen for Mr. Hartke and Miss Emma Ringlesen (sic) were Lizzie Hartke and Lucy Schubert; Theo. Hartke and Louis Ringlesen. For Rev. Hafner and Miss Minnie Ringlesen; Lina Scherer and Dora Hafner, Rev. Groth and August Ringlesen.
After the ceremony, all wended their way to the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. Ringlesen, parents of the brides, where an elaborate feast was spread, and all did ample justice to the good things, which embraced the best the country affords. There was a large company present, who bestowed their congratulations upon the happy couples and in addition to these, congratulatory letters and telegrams were received from Rev. C. Hafner, of Levenworth, Kansas; Rev. Geise of Chicago; Rev. Walz of Pittsburg, Pa.; J. Hafner, father of Rev. H. Hafner, of Bremen, Kansas, and others.
The presents were numerous and magnificent, their friends taking this way of attesting their regard for the young people.

Emma RINGEISEN (daughter of Michael RINGEISEN and Augusta ZABEL) was born on 15 Aug 1878 in Thawville, Illinois.53,125 She died on 16 Mar 1961.128
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Peters Lutheran Church, Thawville, Ill. for Mrs. Emma Hartke. Rev. Douglas Robbins officiated. She was born April 15, 1878 at Thawville, the daughter of Michael and Augusta Zabel Ringheisen. She was married June 29, 1898 to Geo. Hartke in the Thawville Lutheran Church where she and her sister, Miss Minnie Ringheisen and Rev. Henry Hafner shared in a double wedding. The couple lived in Thawville and Buckley before moving to DelRey, where Mr. Hartke operated a grocery and market. Later they moved to Dowagiac, Mich. Her husband died Aug. 3, 1955. She is survived by three sons, Ellis of Buckley, Leonard of Paxton and Clarence of Lyons, four daughters, Mrs. Emiel (Esther) Schultz, Detroit Mich., Mrs. Viola Garrelts, Paxton, Mrs. Wm. (Lillian) Ray, Benton Harbor, Mich., and Mrs. Lenard (Verna) Janssen of Buckley; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank of Kokomo, Ind., August of Danell, Minn., six sisters, Mrs. Minnie Hafner, in Minnesota, Mrs. Tillie Cochran, Mrs. Clara Cook, Rensselaer, Ind., Mrs. Lena Willets, McCoysburg, Ind., Mrs. Millie Reeves of Monon, Ind., and Mrs. Carrie Reinecke of Buckley.
She was buried on 16 Mar 1961 in Thawville, Illinois. (There is a discrepancy: The date of the obit says it was published Thursday, March 23, 1961. If March 23 was a Thursday, then the previous Thursday would have been March 16 -- the date given as her date of death. The obit says she was buried on a Thursday. There are too many Thursdays involved here.) This record was modified on 4 Dec 2000. Added dates of death and burial George A HARTKE and Emma RINGEISEN had the following children:
