Don was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on August 26, 1944, the second of three sons to Ervin F. and Lillian C. (Horman) Nord. He attended Bethlehem Elementary School and Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne, graduating in 1962. He attended Purdue University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1966. He later attended the University of Rochester, in Rochester, New York and completed a Master of Science degree in Engineering Science in 1969.
Don married Barbara Louise Krumwiede on August 21, 1965. They moved to Rochester, NY in January, 1966, upon completion of his schooling at Purdue, to work for Bausch & Lomb Optical Company. At Bausch & Lomb, Don received two U.S. Patents for some of his research work. In Rochester Don & Barb were active members of Hope Lutheran Church. Two sons, Donald Dale and Paul Michael, were born in Rochester.
In 1972 they returned to the Fort Wayne area where Don began his own company to design and build industrial machinery. There they were active members of St. Peter Lutheran Church [Huntington, Indiana], and later of St. Michael Lutheran Church. In Fort Wayne they were blessed with two more children, a daughter, Rose Marie, and a son, Matthew James.
Already in 1972, Don began considering a calling to full-time church work, but family and business delayed that decision for many years. In August, 1986, Don sold his business and they moved to Naperville, IL, where they joined Word of Life Lutheran Church, then a one year old mission congregation.
In September, 1987, Don left his industrial career and enrolled at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne. He completed his studies at Concordia in November, 1989 and was assigned to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Mission for his vicarage training year. In October, 1990 he received his call from the Northern Illinois District to be Missionary-at-Large, assigned to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. In May, 1991, Don will receive the Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Theological Seminary.
