An Old Settler Called
Saturday morning at ten o"clock, the Grim Reaper made another visit here, Mr. Henry Hartke, a citizen of long residence and high standing was taken from his sphere of influence and industry. Though hopes for Mr. Hartke's recovery were no longer entertained, yet few, if any, believed that the end of his useful career was so near. The endindg was rather abrupt. During the previous night he had been unusually restless, but no sinking spells were discernible.
In his death this community loses another honorable and highly respected citizen. He was a man of unimpeached integrity and reliability. His word was as good as his bond. Everyone recognized and acknowledged that fact. As a father, he was deeply devoted to the welfare of his family, and exceptionally wisely and well managed the affairs of his home and household. Mr. Hartke was an exemplary citizen, loyal and true to the core. Every worthy task found support in him. In him his children lose a wise counselor and a loving father, and the widow her dutiful, devoted husband, a real support in all lines of life.
The departed came to this community many years ago, when everything was in a primitive state, more or less. In the days of his youth, he bore the burdens and hardships of pioneer life. He was one of the founders and builders of this community, and did his share fully and well. He leaves a worthy heritage to his children.
The decedent was born in Cook county, this state, on August 17, 1850. When eighteen years old, he removed to this place with his parents, settling on a farm norht of Buckley. In the year 1871, he was united in marriage to his surviving wife and widow. Fourteen children were born of this union: nine sons and five daughters. Two daughters preceded their father into eternity. The children are all grown up, and all married but one. All are in excellent health and well situated.
For many years Mr. Hartke and his fine, happy family, lived on the estate three miles north of the village. Year before last, feeling that old age was gradually approaching, he bought a residence in town. Last year, this home was remodelled and Mr. and Mrs. Hartke meant to pass their declining years there. But it was otherwise decreed by the Heavenly Father. Mr. Hartke did not feel at home in his Buckley home. He lost his appetite and lost interest in life. He did not appear to be sick, but his strength began to fail him visibly. Various doctors were consulted, but all ministrations were unavailing. He grew weaker from week to week. A cancerous growth, assumedly, gnawed on his vitality. Fortunately, he never suffered any pain and was a most patient patient. Never a murmur of discontent passed his lips. He bore his cross with christian fortitude and daily sought and found strength in his Bible.
It was an especial comfort to him that his eldest son came home from Kansas and spent the last weeks with him.
Besides the sorrowing widow and the children, he leaves fifteen grandchildren, two brothers and one sister to mourn his loss.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon and were largely attended. Many fine floral pieces were laid on the bier.
Mr. Hartke has gone to his rest, his mission on earth having been accomplished, and well done.
He was also known as Henry J. Hartke Jr..10
